i wasn't a fan of the 12c and 650s exhaust sound but i saw a 12c today in real life and it sounded amazing really deep sound and the owner juiced it abit for me which was awesome, i would definitely buy one.
Those Mclaren's will surprise a lot of people, you just got to see one and experience the sound and looks. As a big 458 enthusiast, I like Shmee's 650S a lot more. And that's not just based on this video but experiencing them both.
It's funny you say that because I saw my first Mclaren last week. I live in Minnesota so it was expecially unusual to see a 650S driving on the salty, winter roads. The car looked amazing in person. I followed the guy onto a highway enterance ramp and he took off.

National speed limit? Matching your speed to the conditions of the road is far safer than constantly watching your speedo to see if you are a few miles per hour over an artificially imposed, numerical limit.

But sadly the vast majority aren't interested in driving and for them the interest isn't there to be constantly calculating what speeds are safe and reasonable at any given time. As a result of this the rest of us have to wait for those signs to be past in order to accelerate up from 30mph.

The one big problem the Mclaren has, is that the interior is way too boring, in my opinion, and doesn't look luxurious. I mean, A Ford Focus has similar looking knobs... And the exterior only looks good in certain colours. The Ferrari sounds great, looks great, and leaves a better impression.

But if you look at the video (and every other picture..) it looks pretty bland imo (sorry schmee) On the other hand the 458 isn't that great either.

Which I found surprising, but I have to say, when you compare the stuff you mention, carbon tub, horsepower, weight, looks, doors, air-brak, ride-quality and most of all price, I have to conclude compared to the Ferrari your car is a bargain. I know your personal preference isn't the Ferrari otherwise you would have gotten that, but do you feel getting the McLaren is a no-brainer or would you still advice people to get the Ferrari instead?

Yes Shmee all the journalists even more the UK journalist are wrong, because all of they prefer the 458, because when you buy this cars the most important thing is the way it feels when you are driving at 40 miles, really Shmee!!. Speed is one thing, passion and soul is another, 12C was so bad at that they have to do 650. But if you compare to the 458 Speciale then is like day and night so much more passion and feel. I´m just sad that know Ferrari is going turbo way, like Mclaren, and the sound will not be the same thing.
Joshua Moy supercars aren't really meant to be practical. If you want practical you buy a Mercedes/BMW/Audi, which most supercar owners have as their daily car.

I have a McLaren 720S and I just purchased a 458 spider with capristo exhaust.I don't care what she makes as the Ferrari is so much more fun to drive It is like comparing apples to a walnut. Good video and a nice new perspective for those 2 cars, instead of giving them all you got on a track... Ferrari 458 is a really good car, but for the "same" price 650s beats the heck out of it for me, 80+ bhp and 100+ lb ft is really quite a big difference, also it's really visible the 650s has a more comfortable ride than the 458 Btw. You should really try to get a proper Lavalier microphone/recoreder setup, it's a lot harder to hear you when you turn the camera away from you and it's quite hard to hear what you're saying during the whole time you were in the cars...
Hard to compare these 2 cars. The 458 is the last of Ferrari's naturally aspirated V8 cars. Of course it is down on power and torque, but it does sound a million times better than the 650s. A far better comparison will be with the 488 GTB when is out.

McLaren definitely spent more time working on the interior design and it has harmony. The Ferrari looks a little disjoined on the passenger side especially the air vents. The McLaren has kind of a american V8 sound vs the super bike sound of the Ferrari. Depending on what makes you happy it could go ether way, I don't see someone cross shopping these two cars.

All the journalist say the same thing because it's true, Mclaren feels like an extremely fast automatic car but emotionally it's not in the same league as the 458 in terms of being a drivers car, feedback, sound. Especially off the track 458 as a daily driver, just as Mclaren is in another league in terms of speed.
You'd choose 458 as a daily, I'd do te flip, 458 speciale as a track day weapon, 650 as a daily, less aggressive. Softer, more mod cons when compared to the speciale

I don't think this is a fair comparison, the 650s (i agree in this case is a better car) is like 3 to 4 years newer than the ferrari, because this one is the old version not the 2013/2014 one, the 650s must be compared properly against the 488 gtb (i know we will have to wait for that) and this 2010/2011/2012 ferrari 458 spider must be compared with the mp4 - 12C. I understand that for today this would be the most suitable comparisons to do because of the current "transition time" we are having between the 458 to the 488, and that we allready had with te mclaren, as an example of these i would say that we are having the same situation with the lamborghinis between the Gallardo and the Huracan, you have to compare the 650s with the huracan and the 458 with the gallardo (in this case all in there spyder versions. So i personally believe we will have to wait until the 488 gtb spyder and the huracan in the same version to make a proper comparation. Cheers :)

I think the "emotional" part comes more into play when you push the car to its limits. The 458 is better balanced and more playful on the limit though the 650S is faster and more powerfull. I prefer the interior of the 650S and I think the exterior as well actually (it has grown on me).
If I had to choose between these two, I'd go for the Ferrari. It's just that much more special than the McLaren. However, I don't like how EVERYTHING is on the steering wheel

The McLaren is actually practical for UK's crap roads. Remember when Clarkson reviewed the 12C on Top Gear and he commented how he hardly felt the notorious pot hole in part of the track. I'd also say that McLaren is quite understated compared with most super cars. If you want to flash your wealth then you buy a bright red Ferrari. If you love intricately engineered cars you buy a McLaren.

I never though I'd say it, but I'd certainly take the McLaren over the Ferrari. I really am not a fan of the Ferrari's interior, it's design is too messy with no real consistency across the dashboard. The McLaren as a package just seems more appealing to me.

The McLaren is more practical. You don't realize that Car and Driver preferred the 12C over the 458 do you? The 458 may have more soul but that's it.

I see that you appear to be very emotional/passionate in your response. It's an open opinion and you are entitled to your opinion as much as I'm entitled to mine. The styling of the 458 more than makes up for what it lacks in power and comfort compared to the 650s
All the journalist say the same thing because it's true, Mclaren feels like an extremely fast automatic car but emotionally it's not in the same league as the 458 in terms of being a drivers car, feedback, sound. Especially off the track 458 as a daily driver, just as Mclaren is in another league in terms of speed.
You'd choose 458 as a daily, I'd do te flip, 458 speciale as a track day weapon, 650 as a daily, less aggressive. Softer, more mod cons when compared to the speciale
I don't know about you but Shmee sounded like he was milking the Mclaren badly coming to the end of the vid. I know the ultimate plan must be to have the P1 one day!
I don't think this is a fair comparison, the 650s (i agree in this case is a better car) is like 3 to 4 years newer than the ferrari, because this one is the old version not the 2013/2014 one, the 650s must be compared properly against the 488 gtb (i know we will have to wait for that) and this 2010/2011/2012 ferrari 458 spider must be compared with the mp4 - 12C.
I understand that for today this would be the most suitable comparisons to do because of the current "transition time" we are having between the 458 to the 488, and that we allready had with te mclaren, as an example of these i would say that we are having the same situation with the lamborghinis between the Gallardo and the Huracan, you have to compare the 650s with the huracan and the 458 with the gallardo (in this case all in there spyder versions. So i personally believe we will have to wait until the 488 gtb spyder and the huracan in the same version to make a proper comparation. Cheers :)

The Mclaren 650s is a good car but the Ferrari looks too good. It looks a car worth a million pounds.

I think the "emotional" part comes more into play when you push the car to its limits. The 458 is better balanced and more playful on the limit though the 650S is faster and more powerfull.
I prefer the interior of the 650S and I think the exterior as well actually (it has grown on me).

the 650s have to be compared with the 458 Speciale A, the 458 Spider was launched five years ago, but even so the 458 is sucked even more fun than the turbol 650s, and shame that Ferrari will also be turbo from that year

The McLaren is actually practical for UK's crap roads. Remember when Clarkson reviewed the 12C on Top Gear and he commented how he hardly felt the notorious pot hole in part of the track.
I'd also say that McLaren is quite understated compared with most super cars. If you want to flash your wealth then you buy a bright red Ferrari. If you love intricately engineered cars you buy a McLaren.

I never though I'd say it, but I'd certainly take the McLaren over the Ferrari. I really am not a fan of the Ferrari's interior, it's design is too messy with no real consistency across the dashboard. The McLaren as a package just seems more appealing to me.

Same for me but i don't like ferrari's in general where i live it's pretty much you are rich you have a ferrari no one has something else and they are getting boring after a wile and make me feel like they are overhyped (also not a fan of the driving in the 458 but that may be since i only drove it for an hour) and compared to a 650s or a huracan they are pretty boring looking imo
