As a local citizen and frequent traveler, I'm really disappointed with this whole airport project. Not only did they run over a year behind in construction, the cost doubled! It's frustrating to find out that because of attempts to cut corners, the project got delayed and costly additional work had to be completed.
The flow of information about what's going on has been awful as well. Take a look at the updates section on thenewmsy.com and you'll see they haven't posted an official update in about 6 months.
On top of all that, now the airport board is going to the FAA for permission to increase the Passenger Facility Fee charged to people coming in/out of MSY by 50% to cover all the things they didn't plan for like coming up with ideas on what to do with the old airport building, resurfacing the roadways leading to the airport, and other issues that simply weren't accounted for in the planning.

Why do you have to be such an ignorant b!tch??? I'm so glad that they decided to build a brand-new facility directly off of I-10, instead of having to get on Airline Hwy.

@@darryl0173 I feel like my comment was pretty well informed. I fly in/out of MSY about 3 to 4 times a month and have followed the project closely. I was at the airport earlier today as a matter of fact. I don't disagree that we needed a new facility. It's the first and last thing visitors to New Orleans see and experience. My comment was about the poor project management, planning, and cost overruns.

@@brycasti I thought your post was very well done. It always amazes me how some folks immediately resort to name calling and insults if they don't agree with you while hiding behind internet anonymity.

@smith lovy Here's the link to the PFC increase: www.flymsy.com/Files/Publications/PublicNoticeMSY_PFC118.29.19.pdf
Also, if you check the Project Updates page on the website for the new airport terminal (here: www.thenewmsy.com/project-updates) you'll see there was a lull between April and the most recent announcement of the opening date. My first comment was posted before they announced the date.
I don't necessarily think the new terminal was a bad idea. I just don't think the project management was handled the way it should have been on a project this large.
I've toured the facility twice now and it looks great! There will be a number of refinements needed and I personally think some things could have been planned differently, but all in all we have a new facility that will greet guests to our city for years to come and the first views of the area will be in a much more developed area (Veterans Blvd) vs an area in much need of revitalization (Airline Hwy).

I hope this new road system works better than the current one.

I keep hearing about the traffic from the interstate, what about the traffic coming from the opposite direction? I currently live in the Kenner/River Ridge/Harahan area, so I naturally take Airline Hwy. into the airport. Everything I am seeing makes it seem as though I will now have to go up to the Interstate, or Veteran's maybe, and basically back track to get into the airport. It is quite confusing.
As the person below me commented, for as exciting as a new facility for the city and state is, I too am quite disappointed in how the entire process has been handled.

Did he say only ONE TSA checkpoint that everyone will go thru? I am just wondering how this could be more efficient, seems like it would be quite a large backup. I am looking forward to this new airport, will be flying in Nov and Dec!

If you've ever traveled thorough Austin, TX, they have TSA set up this way and it seems to work pretty well. Every time I've gone through there, we've breezed through security. They don't even require to see your boarding pass; all you ha e to show is your ID. I guess they have a list of all passengers travelling through from the airlines, so they expedite screening that way. It's pretty efficient.

The Denver airport has one large TSA operation also and it seems to work well.

Question: why is it being called a New Terminal and not a New Airport..... it seems like a totally new facility is it not?

I just hope the food choices are better this time. MSY had the worse food concessions.
