    Thank you for this. It took me 8 years in our house, to build up the courage to change a light switch myself, without the aid of a 'leccy'.

    Love the way the wires have old paint on them, gives it some realism!

    This looks good.
    Question..how do I resolve the issue of the ON being the switch pressed in and not pressed/positioned out.
    Is my plug socket just upside down...

    Thanks for this, it's really helpful. Does anyone have any tips for when the new screws are not long enough but the old screws are so battered and ugly they are the main reason you wanted to change the light switch in the first place? Is it just a case of sourcing new screws that are long enough and the right size or are there any other tips?

    Useful video.
    One thing about Woodie's that is unfortunate is their ridiculously strict policy about returning things. If you have a choice, go to B&Q, a store that doesn't go mafia when you want to return something.

    I changed a pull cord light switch. It had 3 wires. (Not including the earth wire) 2 in to the common & 1 in to L1. Why is this?

  • @CJUrbex
    @CJUrbex 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    its ok if the new switch your replacing is exactly the same as your old but the newer models have different numbers etc on them but confusing

    It seems to be difficult too find the colour combination in my house built in 99, I have Two red, one brown and one blue.
    I am guessing that the Blue is Neutral, the brown is live but what are the two red wires? No sleeves on the wire too indicate a different colour code.
    Cheers for the upload 🍻

  • @greybadger3142

    Thankyou for this useful video. I understand that “gang” basically means the number of switch buttons. But when we went to buy our switches from B&Q, they were also labelled single and double pole. We weren’t sure, so left it. Any tips?

    Great video! But you might want to say that you are working in the UK. I say this as the wiring colors are different in the UK than in the US. Likewise all those electrical DIY TH-camrs in the states should indicate not only that they are working in the US, but where in the US (Chicago area for instance).Furthermore, indicating where you are working should be stated at the beginning of the video. Other than that, keep up the good work!

    • @JumpingCookie95
      @JumpingCookie95 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marshall Curtis I think this is an Irish channel though ...wire colours might be the same within Europe according to laws... but your'e right it's always better to comment about the country 'cause some things still differ slightly at least :)

    That earth 'fly lead' is stranded which is not allowed, it should be a solid copper conductor.

  • @travelwell6049
    @travelwell6049 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have blue, red and yellow wires, plus earth. If I assume red is still Live and blue is neutral, I don't know what the yellow is. Plus the new switch has a lot more places to put wires into than the old one. In addition, the original wiring has the wrong light being controlled by each switch, so I wouldn't necessarily want to put the wires in exactly the same place.

    What colour is the switch live? What about testing by a competant person? What about a minor works cert'? Your house insurance will be invalid if you do as this bint says and your house burns down. Very irresponsible Woodies.

    • @_tmmy_
      @_tmmy_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The switch live is usually a neutral wire (blue or black), except it is not connected to neutral. It has red or brown sleeving over it to identify it as a live conductor when the switch is turned on

      TD gets an electrician to give him a certificate every time he changes a plug. When he goes swimming he stops at 25m because that's all his swimming badge says he can do.

    Brown is not live, it is line.

    • @thetraveller869
      @thetraveller869 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In the UK the wires are given names which have been used for decades. Those names are 'Live', 'Neutral', and 'Earth'. Live used to be red, and is now brown. Neutral used to be black, and is now blue. Earth used to be green, and is now green and yellow.
      It's the fault of the bloody EU again. Just like the colours of Fire Extinguishers which were different colours depending on their contents. Now they are all required to be red! Really sensible...

    • @ayyannaraoposina950
      @ayyannaraoposina950 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Live & line are one & same in this context.

    • @jonesythejoner
      @jonesythejoner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thetraveller869 Referring to a cable as "Live" implies that the circuit is electrified. Any competent electrician I have ever worked with have referred to the brown conductor as Line when in an installation context.
