- In this short video, we will introduce you to the Maasai, living near Mt. Kilimanjaro. They were once a wealthy tribe with a sophisticated culture centered around the land and vast herds of cattle. But they were impoverished when the government forced them off the land and their cattle died in successive droughts.
These Maasai families were eager to enroll their children in government schools when they were established in the late 1990s. However, Kenyan schools are not free, forcing families to sell cattle from their shrinking herds to pay the fees. When the cattle were gone the families were unable to pay. Large numbers of students were forced to drop out of school.
In the video, we explain the students' challenges and the ADEA Foundation's response. In cooperation with the Pillar of Maasai Development community-based organization. We launched the Keep Kids in School +1 Initiative to return students to the classroom. They are now able to complete their studies and are prepared to take advantage of a world of opportunities with vocational training, English language study, and professional internships.
