  • Ride along with me on our beautiful 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo. This bike is on display at the Eagles Mere Motorcycle Museum in Pennsylvania.
I was reluctant to post this video because I wasn't 100% happy with how it turned out. The turbo noise is not as audible as I was hoping and my contrast settings on my gopro make seeing the boost gauge difficult. I hope to do another video with the camera attached to the bike near the airbox to capture the noise better. I decided to share it because regardless of the video's shortcoming this is such a cool bike and I don't know when I will get a chance to re do the video, so enjoy it for what it is worth.

I had two of these. Loved 'em. I wanted a 650 but gave up riding. Too bloody old for that.

You didn't red-line it! Just as it was getting interesting!
I had a CX500 (how I miss that bike) then a CX650 Eurostyle, which wasn't much faster and was bland. Never knew they made a 500 Turbo - how long do those engines last compared with the bog-standard engine?
There are some pretty cool CX500 cafê racers being built nowadays.

Could you please include more information on this classic and relatively rare motorcycle from Honda? I doubt if I will ever get out to the Eagles Mere Motorcycle Museum as live on the west coast of Canada in the beautiful city of Vancouver British Columbia. I love Honda motorcycles and would very much appreciate it if you would do a more comprehensive video of this motorcycle. Thank you. You are very fortunate to have access to a motorcycle like this and be allowed to take it out for a quick spin. I wish I was as fortunate as you are.

Nice video Joel - enjoyed. Thanks for posting. The NA 500 was a great bike although not that successful - very smooth and was capable of a gazillion miles. The turbo version I think was offered only for a year before Honda bumped it to the 650cc version. That wasn't a great seller either but a very nice bike to be sure, and significantly more power that the turbo 500.

Thank you! Happy you liked it!
The CX500 has a great reputation. I think the only negative thing I heard was that they had mechanical fan that could come apart and damage the radiator.
The turbo era was awesome, so neat so see all the different approaches the OEMs took to it and how similarly short lived all their renditions were. I like Honda's take on it. Put the turbo on an already torquey V-twin and make the turbo small enough to come on in the midrange. It is really fun on the street because you can leave it in top gear, roll on, and after a brief delay you get all the passing power you need. The spool is very satisfying and I don't find the little bit of lag irritating in the least.
