to be fair, watching anything on regular tv is a compromise, you should go to the cinema/buy/stream/pirate for the actual experience, and adding 1.25 to Netflix is giving the option to worsen the experience.
I love options and I'm not against its implementation, but there is a discussion to be had on how it influences first-time viewers who wouldn't get the creator's vision because of it, and what could be done about it. I feel like tucking things like this away in some folder of an options menu with a pop up explaining that you shouldn't use it is a good step. Nothing stops you from using it if you want to, but the viewing experience wouldn't be spoiled as easily.

    • @whydontyouhandledeez

@@zeratulrus142 But my point is that basically all TV shows are made for TV, and those that get DVD releases don't do so until well after the show has aired, yet none of these creators give a fuck because they are hippocrites who like to find any reason to hate Netflix. These same people should also be banning anyone with an old or bad TV too, because color balance and being able to see what's happening is far more important than the speed that it's viewed at, but again, they don't care, because those people are putting money directly into their pockets. What Netflix wants to do is offer consumers quality of life at no charge, and to these people that simply will not do.

As someone who is partially colorblind, I have to crank up the color vividness a decent amount to enjoy movies. Imagine if directors and actors were mad about that and forced me to watch it how "they" intended... It would look bad to me. So yeah, let people do what they want.

    • @lost4468yt

I don't really understand this? Surely it'll still look the same to you as it would if you seen it in real life? You see everything through the colour blindness 'filter', so how does cranking up vividness make it look better?

    • @BradJohannsen
      @BradJohannsen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +113

@@lost4468yt my partial colorblindness results in a red deficiency, not a total loss of color. This means reds and red-toned colors look less vivid to me due to the nature of how my eyes perceive the color overlap. So, turning up the "pop" of colors makes the colors more apparent to me, whereas normally, things look a touch bland.
This is how those colorblind glasses work. They're essentially boosting the color of what you're looking at. Or so I've been told, as I've never tried them.

@@BradJohannsen Ahh ok, because I personally consider that forced colour pop you get with vivid to be much worse. On my LG C8 OLED when the director actually *wants* a "colour pop" it will still pop on the ISF expert setting (which is the default which is pretty close to calibration). Forcing that all the time totally destroys it for me, it just looks like a cartoon, and when the creators actually want it ot happen you don't even notice.
Baby Driver for example has colour pop everywhere, and looks so much better on a more accurate setting. If you set it to vivid you actually lose a *ton* of the contrast and the colours actually 'pop' even less.

I think the argument against playback speeds is so weirdly specific.
If you've got a problem with someone watching at the "wrong" speed, then shouldn't you also take issue with: the pause button, subtitles, and aspect ratio? If you're whining that your art can only truly be appreciated in a very specific and tailored manner, then why should the consumer be able to "ruin" your work by slapping dialogue captions underneath it? Does that go against what you intended for the screen to display? If someone watches in 4:3 instead of 16:9, shouldn't that be an outrage? What's the difference between that and control over speed? The things visibly display ought to count for something in a visual medium, right? If your art is meant to be a specific length, then shouldn't you argue that pausing that experience to go do something is an offense to consuming your art in the "correct" manner?
It's just weirdly specific and arbitrary. Let people enjoy your art however they wish and be greatfull that they choose to spend their time with on your work.

Depending on the video I think watching YT content and movies is pretty different. In terms of TH-cam the content (like this video) is usually info based and so taking in that info faster allows time saving. Movies are experiences and time is put into the speed of scenes and how long shots take to get a feeling. Having the a different speed of a scene can give a very different effect on the viewer. Of course there is cinematic YT content like this which is why i think it should be up to the original creator like Vimeo allows the creator to choose wether the viewer can change speed. This way if the show is like a documentary or something where they don't think the speed matters they can give the viewer that option.

Also there have been plugins that have offered this kind of tweak for Netflix for ages (Super Netflix for example). As you say consumer is king and some people cannot sit through a film as it is, so why restrict them. Also sometimes plodding through some series when there is was a writers strike that year can allow you to enjoy later episodes.

TL:DR; Increased speed = increased consumption. Increased variety, reduced opportunity cost. Faster everything is really just intermediary neural link preparation.
I know I'm way in the minority, but I watch every video on TH-cam at 2x and I listen to audio books at 2.5x and I've watched some anime at 2x or some shows that I wouldn't watch for 30 minutes but I wouldn't mind giving it a try if it were half that length. To be fair, I consume significantly more content than the average consumer. Somewhere around 40 hrs of TH-cam a week just because of the 2x feature (I have no idea if it accounts for the 2x and its actually 80.) The nature of my job and free time allow me to peruse a variety of interests and watch plenty of podcast (ex. WAN Show) that I would otherwise skip over because we are spoiled for choice. I don't have enough time to sit down and read that many books with my eyes anymore, but at work I can listen to 4-8 hours of audio books. I'd only finish a couple dozen books a year tops if I listened at normal speeds. 40 hour books become 2 days worth of listening and now I've broadened my horizons just because of playback speed. (You can argue that retention might suffer but my experience is that only seems to be the case over years and with increased speeds I can refresh at just about anytime because most books become single day experiences if I've got lots of menial chores.)

thekaiserofmord while I agree that this applies for a lot of YT content and podcasts (I too am someone who watches 99% of YT vids on 2x speed) I can't say the same for most movies as the speed of scenes can very much change flow and feeling a scene gets across. @@theblackswordsman9951 agreed, things like music and most movies have a pacing to them and I think you would have to watch an awful lot of movies before your brain figured out what pacing looked like at 2x. 60fps playback is heavy for most of submid range Android, some phones can even drop some frames, really, 60fps is ok for PC but for mobile is a bad move, people won't watch more or less because 30 or 60 fps, and 60 doesn't make any impact for stationary videos, only fast action can really be enhanced by it, besides as viewers we are already used to the 60fps look, it kinda doesn't standout as much as it used to. Please continue focusing on the content and 30fps, it increases accessibility and its looks only depends on what is being reproduced!
