Although BVR definitely isn't nearly as exciting as BFM/dogfighting IMHO, I think its a lot more important. As someone relatively new to DCS world, I really appreciate you making these videos going over the tactics of a BVR. Its a massive help!
The weird part is that the AIM-120 like other big missiles uses a proximity fuze. It doesn't have to physically it the target and the explosive cone will shred the target rather than relying on an impact. Despite it being a few feet behind the enemy aircraft it should have detonated.
I guess I never really thought about just keeping them in gimbal limit on the deck to reduce the turn time, of course I never really have done many bvr engagements
I usually base my cranking amount by looking at my radar and positioning the target on the very edge of the radar cone. That way you know exactly how much your limit is and drag the incoming missile the most you can.
It's like you guys have read my mind. I have spent the past few days researching this, but you guys do a great job at this. BVR is something i have been trying to work on recently. Much appreciated!
Thanks for the BVR vid. I would like it if you explained more where you are reading the sensor information from the displays in the fight. ie - where is it showing the range to target. The target high. Etc
Another tip would be to reduce your throttle when cranking and then increase when skating, my time in the Tomcat has taught me merging is never really a good idea, reduce throttle, reduce closure, stick to your BVR timeline of sanitize -> meld -> engage -> crank -> skate -> recommit and repeat and youll avoid a merge very well.
Another note would be to not crank in one direction, if he launches again while you crank, that missile is gonna cut you off and kill you easy, crank left and right before skating
OMG I was watching a video of two Tom cats shooting down some mig-23 and I found where you got your intro from, I came straight here to share my incredible findings. 🙃
Only addition I have: Slow down in the crank. No need to go 1.05M or 700kts. You want to preserve range by the crank angle and also the speed. Also, a speed this high is not a tactical airspeed.
As a new player, like the one who gets hit in the face trying to do this.. I try and use your awesome information to avoid said situations, so thank you. Unfortunetly, I get TWS locked, and can't pick him up outisde of 40km where he already has an 120 in the air, I figure this out just based off distance, and half way into my turn im getting blasted, also I'm not getting IFF info as it comes back as unknown l lot of the time, and it doesn't help at all that they are using ECM so it's really hard to keep trying to lock them, keeping them at gimble limits, figuring out how close the missle is and when it was fired as even pitbul warning goes off later than I know what to do with it, if I do I'm usually too far away for a fox 2 and stuggling between keeping him locked if I even get a chance to lock him, and do missle calculations based off of what I've already learned, Hope this becomes second nature. I, as welll as a lot of newer players still really have issues with how far the radar can actually spot contacts painted by awacs, much less lock them up past 60km.. that and i've seen you guys at 40/50km going over 300knts.. the highest I could get in the hornet was 40 and the f16 43 was it's ceiling. before losing all it's speed and manuverability, making it pretty much useless in any type of real engagement.

But ya these older videos have all that information in their tacviews
That S-turn GS's second-to-last AMRAAM did was a result of P/N guidance in the terminal phase and the turn reversal that the other Hornet did. I think the miss was a result of the missile going at ~1.2 mach just not quite having the G available for the intercept, maybe combined with DCS's goofy implementation of proximity fusing.
How wide is the radar beam cone of Aim120? I assume it is fixed antenna and not gimbal? To me it seems this missile in 15:15 just started tracking, turned at the target and then corrected for lead but could not pull that tight anymore. I wonder how quickly Aim120s guidance computer can actually calculate correct lead after it's radar locks target?

I've been watching your videos for a while now and I understand the concept behind BVR strategy, but I'm curious to know if there is a different approach when engaging multiple targets. Most of your videos are 1v1, but most of the missions in DCS (especially the campaigns) have you fighting a bunch of enemies with your wingman. Do the concepts for 1v1 BVR still apply in that situation, or is there a different tactic to be used?
always stay in afterburner and also go easy on your stick don't pull too hard for nose position, nice gentle stick movements this will help you maintain the speed.
I would appreciate it if you make a BVR video where you don't crank in the same direction as your opponent. If you don't crank in the same direction (in the first salve), you would have to fly roughly straight ahead to avoid reaching the gimbel limit. That would mean that you cannot defend the opponent properly if you want to eliminate him.
its not that big of a deal as you think lol. just establish the best angle off you can and continue to reduce altitude as you crank, you not being able to crank also means he can't crank as much either just means you will both have to go cold sooner. the only time this really becomes a problem is when the guy you're fighting is an F-15 or F-16 in which case the tactics are pretty different anyway.

Hey gs, just got the winwing Libra and Taurus hotas, could you post your control profiles somewhere?
What does it mean going cold
Very informative! Thanks.
