Also, Linkara forgot to act out that most awesome of moments from Infinity War.
Galactus: "Silence, fool! Mighty Galactus knows what must be done!"
Thanos: "Does mighty Galactus know that our chances of outrunning this disturbance are minimal?"
Galactus: "Does annoying Thanos have an alternative course of action to suggest?"
    Thanos: "...no."

Part of why I love the original run instead of the Eco-Terrorist angle for the movie. Though Linkara's recap there (probably for humor) didn't mention that the tragedy is Death did love Thanos. It was their own mental issues. They wanted to be equals, and joined together as equals. Death rejects Thanos not because Thanos is creepy, but because she sees herself not worthy of the all powerful entity Thanos. And Thanos becomes such an entity because he saw his mere titan self as not worth of Death. It was a lack of communication and acceptance in pursuit of an idea of becoming equal to your perceived would be better half.
But that might just be me and my bastardized reading of the events.

Hitomi Salazar “To Challenge them would be to court death”. Someone in the comments of a video of that scene put it best. It’s clear they didn’t have a plan until they started writing Infinity War and Endgame besides getting the Infinity Stones and possibly doing a loose adaptation of Infinity Gauntlet. Plus Death appears in Guardians 1 in mural form I believe in the Moragg temple.

I think the evil duplicates make a kind of sense, at least as far as Magus is concerned. Fact is, he knows he's an evil duplicate of Warlock, so I think his obsession with grotesque shadows of heroes fits in with what he's all about. It may not make the most narrative sense (distractions for other tie-in books, mostly), but it suits the villain's sensibilities well.

    Fun Fact about Doppelganger:
He is actually still alive, as far as I know. While he seemed to have died during Maximum Carnage, the thing is with him, he can't actually ever die since he was never technically alive. (I dunno, comic books.) He later appeared during the Carnage mini-series, still working with Shriek, and helping her free Cletus Kasady and reunite him with the Carnage Symbiote, after Cletus had seemingly died after being ripped in half by the Sentry. I believe he appeared again during the storyline Carnage USA, and then most recently we actually see him during the lead up to Absolute Carnage. So... yeah, Doppelganger continues to be a thing, even if it regulates him to always being around his "parents" Shriek and Carnage. Makes me wonder why none of the other evil versions of the Marvel Heroes haven't shown up.

Actually Pym did have powers. His schtick at this point was that instead of shrinking or growing himself, he would keep shrunken objects and tools in his pockets and enlarge them as needed.
It was a side story in West Coast Avengers during the whole period where the main team was stuck travelling through time. He'd gotten pretty depressed for a time and contemplated suicide until the former WCA ally Firebird, who'd gotten some angel like powers for a bit, helped him recover. He came to the conclusion that all the different identities were part of his mental illness and needed to just be himself, Dr. Pym the scientific adventurer. In his initial outing where he helped get the West Coast Avengers back to the present, he actually dressed like the Fourth Doctor. That was quickly changed out for the red jumpsuit with lots of pockets seen here.
Of course as soon as another writer gets hold of him in the main Avengers book, he's back to playing musical identities and becomes Giant Man again despite numerous times we've been told his body can no longer stand the stress of growing. I liked how years later, after adopting the identity of The Wasp, Iron Man totally disses him for this. Tony said he shouldn't lead the mission because he's Hank Pym. Pym responds that he's The Wasp now. Tony replies, "Exactly my point."

The problem with the Infinity Crossover Trilogy (Gauntlet, War, Crusade) is that they were written by Jim Starlin. See, Jim Starlin is actually a pretty solid writer for the most part, but he tends to have a narrow focus with his pet characters. Said pet characters being Thanos and Adam Warlock. All of the Infinity crossovers are basically about how Adam Warlock and Thanos make these decisions and actions that shape the very foundation of the universe, while Earth's heroes don't really matter much to the plot at all.
It can actually come across as Starlin using the heroes comic readers want to read about (Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, etc.) as a way to get people to read his stories about Thanos and Warlock. If you take the Earth-based Marvel heroes out of the Infinity Trilogy, nothing really much changes, they could have been replaced with cosmic characters drawn from the Shi'Ar Imperial Guard, the Inhumans, the Kree, the Skrulls and so on, and nothing really would have changed from a story perspective. The Infinity Trilogy really could have just been a story in Adam Warlock's solo book, but without the actual characters people want to read, the book wouldn't have sold. So it's turned into a mega-crossover so everyone can read Starlin's Thanos and Warlock stories.
It's really made clearest when Starlin wrote a story involving Annihilus, who Thanos noted was evolving into the scariest cosmic being Thanos could think of. And what type of being is that? A being outsider of Order and Chaos, just like Thanos and Warlock. Basically, the only thing that scares Thanos is someone becoming exactly like him and Warlock.

This was the culmination of a bit of a conflict between depictions of the cosmic side of Marvel between Mark Gruenwald's Quasar and Jim Starlin's books (mostly Warlock, but also Silver Surfer). Gruenwald was pushing Quasar as a significant player in that arena, but he found himself undercut by the commercial success of Starlin's books.
Quasar was never quite as significant again.

Adam Warlock's original outfit was partially designed by Roy Thomas, who was a huge Captain Marvel fan.
Fawcett Captain Marvel, who eventually got bought by DC, not Marvel Captain Marvel. Though, due to his love of Fawcett's Captain Marvel, Thomas set up a situation where Marvel Captain Marvel--the original Marvel Captain Marvel, the Kree Captain Mar-Vell--had to swap places with a young man from Earth in a flash of lightning-like energy. In this case, Rick Jones, after a brief stint in which he was a replacement Bucky for Captain America, being trained up to snuff, but deciding he wanted to focus more on his music.
And if you think the Magus' look is silly, just picture his original look: exactly the same, except instead of a topknot, imagine a 3-foot diameter afro.

I can understand you not remembering him in Carnage USA as while Clayton Crain's art is awesome, Doppelganger blended in with the Carnage possessed minions.

As for his appearance, to be fair, Warlock had a better outfit in this era, but his hair was also ridiculous, imo. They didn't get Warlock and his alternate future self the Magus right until the 2000s, I'm, when they just gave them longish hair

Linkara not being able to use his own magic to turn the bank into an actual infinity gauntlet actually makes sense. There is only so much magic power he's got access to, he was struggling to make the power ranger morphers. Plus he's only begining to understand his power. If his magic was so strong that recreate the Infinity Gauntlet...he wouldn't NEED to.

I will love it if Marvel actually have a after credit scene with Thanos as a farmer. I suprisingly really like him here, he was never a villian and he sure is´t a hero here but he does have his strange motive and lack of understanding good and evil which I actually like. But is it from this the double gangers came from? Is this it? Wow imagine Maximum Carnage did way more with Doubleganger then the event comic he came from, and was he the only one who survived? I do hope you will go trought Maximum Carnage since now you go trought comics you do like and I do like MC. Crossing my fingers here. Seeing this right after Infinite Crisis Marvel heroes are so wastley outclassed by any cosmic being in terms of power. Just the Green Lantherns from DC is stronger then everything Marvel got, in terms of mortal heroes. But it is´t about power but it feels like Marvel is trying to use it´s heroes the same way DC does then Marvel heroes got there own charm, like in Secret Wars or that Avengers vs JL crossover.

I feel like the Magus's plan wasn't actually as specific as you make it out to be. Basically boiled down to telling Thanos he was up to something to get him on the path to investigating with Adam and then create enough chaos and shows of power to make them feel like they need the gauntlet so they'll undo the restrictions. Though like you said, the Earth hero stuff is pretty much pointless and only there to make it feel like an event. Just bread crumbing Galactus and Thanos/Adam's group together would have likely been enough to get them to do it.

  • @moonled
    @moonled 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thing that bugs me about Events is that they're not internally consistent - as if individual writers were never told the big picture. In CoIE the Flash and The Losers and others just died but Supergirl was erased from continuity. In Millenium some characters had always been Manhunters but others were just replaced by Manhunters.

Man. I LOVED this crossover when it came out in Italy (a year after the US, I think), but watching your review made me realize that... yeah, the plan was needlessly complicated. Still, I really liked the development Ron Lim did with Thanos, and hated the way other writers chose to ignore it to have back the super powerful death worshipper.
My 15yo self, though, really liked the doppelgängers.
Also, it’s a bit strange hearing your pronunciation of Magus’ name: in Italy we’d say it more closely to the Latin pronunciation, I guess. 🧐

17:00 While I'm no expert in nuclear fusion, fission, or explosions I can explain this sequence.
Erik Masterson is able to send the fallout into space because fallout is just what it sounds like, radioactive dust "falling out" from the bomb, thus it can be swept away by winds. (in fact that is one of the reasons why an atomic bomb is so lethal.)
Though that doesn't change the fact that the fallout is actually MORE lethal in space as is can now go to the oceans, (but you know, what would a METEOROLOGIST know about the WEATHER?!) Or that the wind would do squat to the actual radiation, OR the fact that the blastwave would level an entire city block in a fraction of a second. (But it's a super hero comic so we can cut them some slack on the last one.)

  • @MaJuV
    @MaJuV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, the earth heroes were probably inserted in order to lure in some fans of those series, rather than having any importance. You know, sales do matter.
They improved on that in the Annihilation saga and its sequels in the mid 2000s, focusing solely on Marvel Cosmic characters (and a few rando's like Cammi and Jack Flag).
And while this created some of the best events of the past few decades (IMHO), it also made a lot of people skip it. I only went to read it all when the first Guardians movie was announced and immediately felt bad for skipping it when it was originally released.

Though I guess a sequel that happened sooner and had rather less going on would help with that. I agree that the ordinary heroes felt like they were dragged along for the ride, but it was still cool watching them try to figure things out. And Thanos is a surprisingly compelling figure -- a villain redemption arc done right. (Shame to read in the other comments that apparently he reverts to dumb evil in the end. . .)
