YES! THANK YOU! Oh my god, you have no idea how the Dragon Roost Island music has haunted me for DECADES now! The first time I played Wind Waker in middle school, and first heard its music, my ear kept anticipating that it would turn into something else from Zelda but couldn’t quite place it. I kept asking friends, but they usually hadn’t played more than one or two games, and weren’t really musically inclined. Years later I finally pieced together that it was similar to the Overworld theme, but couldn’t really explain how to others, I’ve never taken any kind of music theory class, I just hear what I hear, and that’s really all the answer I got from others, that I was just changing the music to connect them and hearing what I wanted. Over the years, I tried looking up TH-cam videos and Zelda fansites that would mention or analyze music references, but nothing was EVER said about Dragon Roost Island. Thank you, sir. You’ve helped me come to terms that I am not, in fact, crazy lol
I don't know what it is about Frozen Rito Village, even though I'm a winter person, there's something about the music that plays there, and the familiarity is there, but it's just so almost hopeless sounding that it gets me choked up
Given the numerous fake composer react videos where the "composer" just listens to a piece and says "Oh wow that's cool", your videos are so refreshing. Thank you for actually digging in to the details. You're wonderful!
It's okay I can see all new comments no matter the video. I want to do more of it! I'll probably do more in videos that I don't expect to do as well. Because I still enjoy it.
I love how your videos make me hear even more details in Zelda music every time. I'm so impressed by your skill to play everything by ear and be able to analyse it. Keep up the good work! Music theory can be so interesting! :)
Man I’ve been doing this on my own in my head for over a decade (a full decade after graduating from music school) and just had no one to share it with. This channel is definitely a blessing my. Glad so many others are enjoying it!
I love what they did with Dragon Roost Island in BOTW. One of my favorite tracks from windwaker and one of the few BOTW tracks that I really get into. As far as the theory stuff it's interesting even if don't understand hardly any of it. I like to think I'm gradually learning new ways to appreciate music 😂
Get such Gerudo Valley theme vibes from the Dragon Roost Island theme. Maybe its just the beat clap 😂 could listen to both of them looped infinately, just so upbeat. In BotW/Totk, for me, Rito themes are just so airy, it sounds like flying. Climbing and soaring, breeze through your feathers just effortlessly gliding. Its insane how well the music fits! I think as far as regional music Rito is my favorite. I just LOVE the mandolin it is just stunning and suits the clarinet and piano. And it is a common instrument in Dragon Roost and Rito Village (day). For me the day version gives House theme vibes a bit and ties into the nigt version by giving Epona theme vibes.. Just a great video. This was such a pleasure to listen to and have those realizations hit like 😮 this reminds me of this.
Zelda music kinda follows jazz rules a lot of the time I notice. It allows you to reuse and revamp in different ways but still remain true to overall theme, even when improvising. And the chords they use, climbing up and down the major and minor scales, evoking emotional or grand feelings. 💕
the thing i love about the frozen rito theme is the contrast between the frozen and the regular version! It sounds like the orchestra playing this is cold and half the players are frozen and prevented from playing, they’re barely able to finish the lines, it sounds like they are frozen over too! poor guys had to play during all this cold period:( I love this way of conveying how the music is supposed to feel, just play it as if the people playing it are feeling it too!
I personally love the night music better than the day version. It’s so much more raw and feels like what the tropical Dragon Roost Island would be like if it were a cold mountainous village instead. (Especially considering Vah Medoh roosts on the village) I literally teared up when I discovered the village and heard that it was the Dragon Roost theme pretty much one to one.
Ever since I played BOTW I've been more in touch with nature. It's so corny but I really came to appreciate how beatiful things are when just taking in the moment. Specially because the reasons you explain, it's always so soft and light
Could you perhaps do a deep dive into the themes surrounding Kass (Kass‘ theme, the Champion‘s ballad, his arrangements of established themes, etc.) soon - perhaps as a sort of epilogue to your “Road to Rito”-series?
Already filmed, edited, and ready to upload probably 1-2 weeks out. Champions Ballad didn’t make it but 3 other bird themes along with 3 Vah Medoh themes did. 😁
I'm so glad that you're covering this, because the entire time I was playing this segment I was freaking out because of the vah medoh leitmotif and the colgera theme made me cry haha
At last! This is the channel I have been looking for for so long!! I'm so grateful you can transmit and break down all of these awesome themes. You're doing an awesome job! Can't wait to see how you analyze Vah Medoh's and Colgera's theme...
Thanks so much! I hope these type of videos get more views- this is a format I think is really valuable and no one is really doing. Thanks for the comment and for coming along! I think episodes 2 3 and 4 turned out the best. SO MUCH to talk about!
I would love some more music theory but packaged in such a way that us noobs can understand and appreciate it too. While I love your videos, even now I sometimes have trouble following your thought process, although that might just be me.
I always love it when you go into the music theory of it all. Music theory is so fascinating and you explain it so succinctly! And the channel is called Zelda Music Theory after all ;) Also, I don't comment much but I'm the sound mixing nerd from a few months ago and I've gotta say, it's been sounding so much better lately! You're doing an amazing job and with all the improvements you've been making, your videos are so professional (to the point where I forget you don't have several hundred thousand subscribers yet haha) and well made. I look forward to seeing more of this series! The Rito music has always been among my favorites in botw/totk and oh my god the Colgera theme. I genuinely cried when the Dragonroost theme came in during the final phase of the fight and I didn't even play Wind Waker! It's by far my favorite totk theme and I can't wait for you to talk about it :) Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks so much! I realized (through another comment) that my new mic is backwards 😑 so hopefully like 4-5 videos from now it will start sounding better. That one House Theme vid I just boosted it way too much. And funny enough that video got like 90k views in a month. SO I had probably 30 comments saying, “Hey there I think your audio is peaking.” But always trying to improve the quality! Thanks for the comment and for watching! Colgera soon to come. More Road to Rito soon.
3:35 Well that's the Song of Healing, innit? Just looked through your backlog. There's no Majora's Mask related videos, huh? That one is a treasure trove. Oath to Order, Final Hours *chefs kiss*
Hahahaha it’s going to get worse in parts 2 3 and 4, but I am going to do some more music theory for beginners content soon so take heart 😅 I try to keep it moving so it’s entertaining. That’s partly why you don’t understand it, I don’t really explain it, and also partly why you can stop watching, I don’t explain it (sometimes it’s boring if I slow down) 😆
There's actually no bass in the original! That's something that was added in the smash bros version. I'm replaying WW for the first time I'm a very long time and I can understand the confusion.
I definitely loved that video, his videos are always so good. I almost mentioned that in my video, I often do. That’s one reason I just drew out a couple of cool parallels instead of doing a deep dive on this one.
@@ZeldaMusicTheory can’t wait to see your future videos! Now, I’m not familiar with music theory and I like that you do this deep dive. For novices like myself, maybe a separate Navi-like tutorial video on music theory concepts you frequently cover in your videos might be helpful! That way I can appreciate your effort, expertise, and analysis even more! ☺️
You got it, all 5ish parts already filmed, need to film Wind Temple and Colgera. Road to Rito part 2 and 3 are already posted, just awaiting the next two weekends. Likely one a week for the next 5-6 weeks.
Wow. So as you said, the classic Dragon Roost island theme references the Wind Waker ancient hero theme, and i believe that may just partly be because all Zelda games or the whole Zelda franchise in general uses the same chords, i think you explained this in another video, Im not sure which, but they always manage to capture the essence or the vibe of the game in every single game, while still making it feel like it is part of a bigger whole, namely the series itself, which i think is absolutely magical and amazing. 😁😁 And to tie together two things you mentioned: the trill/ intro at the beginning of BotWs Rito village theme (i used to call it the melancholy sun rise) was used in the Life in ruins trailer for BotW in 2019 i believe, which as you said and i just explained, perfectly captures the essence of what Breath of the Wild was When i first played BotW, i found it slightly jarring to not hear reimaginings of classical themes like the Hyrule field theme, also no Lost Woods and no Gerudo valley theme (goddammit!), but as i discovered this new Hyrule it became aparent why. BotW is literally Life in Ruins, its supposed to sound melancholy, it is life after a world-shattering catastrophe and like a tiny flower poking its way out of burnt soil (symbolized by the blossoming Silent princess in the title and in the game itself), the whole atmosphere is... one of sadness and solitude, in a way. Link vs. the Wild (the Breath of the Wild.) Again, perfectly capturing the essence and vibe of the whole game itself, which in turn is reflected in so so many other themes and aspects of the game. So the melancholy Sunrise as i called it, was very fitting for the more calm Rito village: full of sun, and a calm relaxing atmosphere, but always with a slightly sad undertone, like you're missing days in the past. Also quick little thing i noticed, when you played that intro part from Rito village day, it sounded like the two first notes from Zeldas Lullaby. When you said that the Rito village night theme sounded like a night cafe, i had to give it a quick listen, and you're right! Even with the soft guitar in the background, so cool! Also when i was on my way to Rito in Tears of the Kingdom i had actual chills. The way the Rito theme sounds as if its quiet and muffled, like its echoing from far away, and with that slight howling effect, like wind whistling through a hollow space, sounds so eerie and haunting. It really sells that idea that whatever has blanketed Rito village is more than just simple snow, but some sort of dread and sadness that stole the warmth of the Rito area away, freezing it to the bone. Oh man, i cannot wait for the Wind temple breakdown, also the Colgera theme is a gift from heaven. Cheers, and see u soon 👍👍👍
Oh wow you’re right! Man, if there were any houses or anything in Rito I would call it intentional. It’s possible someone threw it in there as a reference still… Hmmm. It does sound very similar to the use in Hateno. I’d love to interview the composer and see if it was intentional.
Oh wow I see what you mean! Definitely not intentional 🤣 but still fun to think about. The last 3 notes are actually the only identical intervals, that first note is a whole step higher in Rito than in Kakariko. Very cool though! Thanks for sending times, I had no idea where this was.
Great analysis as always, Kevin. Rito Village's Theme is definitely one of my favourite video game themes of all time. I should definitely try relearning it on piano. Btw, how manh instruments can you play, considering you can play the guitar, saxophone and piano
So I have a degree that taught me basically every standard instrument to some degree, but Sax is my main instrument, piano is my fav and most useful, guitar is how I learned chords and chord progressions, and I can sing a little. French horn was my first ever instrument in middle school, switched to clarinet for a semester then alto sax.
Here is your reminder that you are absolutely awesome at what you do and that we all hope you get a computer setup soon so you can up your production. Btw thank you for reading your comments and everything. I look forward for more videos. I can’t be a patreon but I will still like all your videos and comment because I’ve always wanted a channel like you. Are you inspired by Charles Cornell because he makes similar videos like you. Keep grinding my man and stay safe. We all appreciate what you do here and hope you have a great day. Just great job 👏
Thanks so much! What a great message to read! I hope the computer just makes it faster and more efficient editing and adding Midi and stuff. One day at a time! And yes I really like Charles Cornell’s style of drawing out really interesting musical concepts through video games, movies, etc. I guess he’s the closest to the style I’m trying to emulate, more than say Adam Neely or Rick Beato or even 8BitMusicTheory. Ike, Charles Cornell presentation but mostly Zelda and maybe 25% other games and movies and stuff. But one thing I didn’t try to emulate was his background with black and white zig zags. That was kinda coincidence 😅
I love these videos!! Did you notice how when it did the higher notes in the frozen theme it sounded like the rito children singing? Because they were *spoiler* left in the village alone? Super desolate and very sad with the dissonant tones with the background
No I didn’t but can you send me a clip to anything you find and times? Filming my full Wind Temple reference video soon and may include it if it’s cool!
Chord symbols are very valuable, if affordable to do without. Can I ask what about implementing them seems "harder than it's maybe worth"? Figuring the chords? Adding the text to the relevant timestamps? Do you do all of your own editing?
Yeah it’s the text. And to some degree making sure I don’t notate it wrong and make a fool of myself not knowing how to notate “Tritone Substitution” or something, but mostly pausing the video the exact moment, typing it, making sure the sizing is okay, adding the next, and the next. Probably an extra hour of editing, which might equate to an entire day of channel time. It’s similar to adding MIDI, just takes a long time for all the steps. Making it work, and I’m committed to quality, but inevitably it’s going to slow down how many videos I can do. So that’s the trade off. Yeah it’s all me, all self-learned. Just messing around in my garage and it has turned into a legit channel unexpectedly. I mean, I worked SUPER hard to keep quality high and be consistent, but I was aiming for 1k subs in 12-18 months. Lol. I’m at 15k it’s been 5 months. Crazy. One day I’d love to have an editor and just film and hand it over. I’m sure if I grow big enough I’ll bring on a team at some point.
Yes, I thought so too! I remember people being slightly upset that the Kakariko Village theme was changed in BotW, but I figured the vibe of original Kakariko fits better with the Rito Village and I wondered if this was their way of referencing it. Storytelling through music-wise, not sure what this means for the lore though
So you guys aren’t alone, a few others had the same thought. It’s not quite the same notes as Kakariko though, only the last 3, and very different context musically. So I’d call this more of a coincidence than intentional use of the Kakariko opening motif. Always enjoy the comments though, thanks for commenting!
Thanks to you now i dont have to infodump to anyone who asks why the Rito theme is my favorite zelda race theme: i can just send them to this video instead! Also i dunno if its just cause i got into zelda late and dont have the nostalgia factor or what, but im firmly in camp "breath of the wild's music is perfect for the game and fits it far better than a bombastic soundtrack, y'all are just mean 😤" (although i think that's become way less of a hot take nowadays 😂)
Yeah I can’t remember if it’s this video or another (I think this one) where I say the exact same thing. Strongly agree. Nintendo is always like 10 years ahead of it’s time.
We’ll see how this series does over time. I think my average first 24 hours is maybe 2k right now. 6-8k means it’s gonna perform really well. My best ever was 27k on my Trailer breakdown, the video that blew my channel up first. I think I’m happy if I get 5k 🤣
I know something you don't know about the Dragon Roost Island them :3 its worth another video and no one has talked about it on YT. If you reply to this, I will share it with you ;)
Haha I reply to all my comments (when possible). 😁 I’m listening (although it’s harder to find comments that are older, so if I ever don’t answer send me a new thread).
@@lndtbs My last recording session I had the mic on backwards. Sounds incredibly muffled, had to re-record the whole thing. Chord symbols are YES PLZ thank you.

ALTTP title theme, is that you?
thanks!
I never caught the Z1 reference. This will do nicely for my paper. May I sight you?
Of course!
I think the Bb-D-Bb-F at 2:48ish sounds like the beginning of Kakariko Village/the Windfall Island theme
Am I hearing a hint of "Gerudo Valley" in the background guitar in the night version?
Not sure! Feel free to send me the time you hear it
Thanks to you now i dont have to infodump to anyone who asks why the Rito theme is my favorite zelda race theme: i can just send them to this video instead!
Nintendo is always like 10 years ahead of it’s time.
why is there only 160 views
We’ll see how this series does over time. I think my average first 24 hours is maybe 2k right now. 6-8k means it’s gonna perform really well. My best ever was 27k on my Trailer breakdown, the video that blew my channel up first. I think I’m happy if I get 5k 🤣
I know something you don't know about the Dragon Roost Island them :3 its worth another video and no one has talked about it on YT. If you reply to this, I will share it with you ;)
Haha I reply to all my comments (when possible). 😁 I’m listening (although it’s harder to find comments that are older, so if I ever don’t answer send me a new thread).
audio seems kind of messed up in this video, i think you recorded some things too loud causing distortion.
That’s been a common theme for me. Working on it 😅
@@ZeldaMusicTheory I still appreciate your content but I wanted to bring it up since it's a music-focused channel. I'm sure you'll figure it out.
@@lndtbs My last recording session I had the mic on backwards. Sounds incredibly muffled, had to re-record the whole thing. This is the type of thing that goes on behind the scenes that no one sees 😑😅 It’s all good though, I’m sure the second attempt will be better than the first. Thanks for the feedback!
@@ZeldaMusicTheory As long as we learn from our mistakes it’s all good!
