    I always thought of Koltin's quest differently.
    He wanted to become one like Satori (the lord), but his method of doing so was not true.
    While Satori reached true enlightenment and truly ascended; Kilton, as well as many others, tried to find a cheap-fast method that turned him into a poor imitation of The Lord: a Blupee.
    All the while, Bubbul Frogs were those who were so obsessed by The Lord's power that their transformation turned them misshapen and impure. Link purified them into regular Blupees and took the remnant of power they left to Koltin, who had no evil intentions and was able to avoid becoming a Frog.
    In short, I saw all as a metaphor of the unethical use of shortcuts and the greed for power.

    • @Moon-Vixen
      @Moon-Vixen 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +76

      I also had a similar theory. that bluepees are the start. well, maybe Satori (the horse) was the first, reached enlightenment in life and became a spirit, and was then followed by other spirits, already passed souls who didn't become the poes, but more like the champions and king. souls who wished to follow Satori and became bluepees. the same way monetarists have head monks who teach and train others. as bluepees they're tasked with letting go of their worldly desires, like greed, and should they be able to, they too can become fully enlightened Satori. but those who fail and fall victim to their greed become malformed bubblefrogs, and Link then releases them from that curse, reverting them back to a bluepee and taking away the gem they coveted. and in exchange for saving those bluepees and releasing them from that torment, the one who swallowed the gems was then allowed to become a bluepee and begin "training" like all the others.
      though I think yours makes more sense, with the whole greed thing and collecting the gems in the first place being a problem, a living human collecting them then shouldn't have a "good" outcome. though he seemed happy to become a bluepee, so idk if this is really a "bad" outcome from his pov.

      I can agree, I think Zeltik is giving too much credit to every little detail he can find not taking into account that the game was translated from Japanese, and a lot of information could have been lost or mistranslated, that humans are not perfect and filling a game with text is a lot of work, someone might very well at some point have put some text somewhere just to call it a day, and that it's a game, and it's supposed to be humorous, so everything might not be intended to make sense.

    I think the babbul frogs are spirits who were trying to achieve enlightenment and were in the blupee phase, but got too greedy for rupees and started hoarding them. When they aren't in their frog form, they turn into babbul gems. If there is some association with greed, that would explain why one wants to collect more so badly. There are a few Zelda games which have characters who are punished for their greed, so i think it fits thematically!

    • @Flapjack3734
      @Flapjack3734 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I totally agree, although I think they aren’t “collecting” rupees (since that would require the Blupees to steal rupees, and it would also go against the whole “greed is bad” thing), but instead I think the Blupees have as many rupees in them as they had when they turned into a spirit. They still hold on to some of their greed but its not much. Meanwhile I’m pretty certain the Satori (or enlightened one in this case) has no rupees to drop because they are completely void of greed. So for a Blupee to become a Satori, they probably have to let go of all their riches, which they might be very hesitant to do even as a blue spirit rabbit

    There's a deeper theme against greed in the Zelda series in general. Ganondorf was once regarded as the King of Thieves, his greed and lust for power driving him to becoming a demon king, and as you mentioned in the video, a number of characters throughout the series are punished for their greed and ask Link to help free them, giving away the objects of the greed as rewards for their freedom.

      The Bubbulgens appear to be cursed, and taking one makes you desire more. The gold taken from No Face is cursed, and those who take it become greedy, only to get eaten by the spirit. It's not until he spits out the frog after eating the medicine Chihiro gave him that he reverts. He even tells her "Want some gold? I'm not giving it to anyone else!" Implying that the gold he made was never for those spirits to take, as it hadn't been offered freely. Since the gems become Link's upon defeating the spirit, we can take them without consequence. Then Link gives them freely to Koltan, who has no evil intent, thus is not cursed either. Just like how No Face wanted only Chihiro to have gold because she refused to take any without permission (and even rejected the offer) the bubbulfrogs may want only Link to have these gems

    Also interesting to note that you run into various treasure hunters, all interested in looking for bubbulfrogs but none ever actually finding any. It could possibly be because they are looking with the intent of making money (showing greed) and perhaps that is why blupees don’t show them the way to bubbulfrogs. I wonder why Link is special. Like the shrine sages, maybe these spirits know Link can help them and isn’t looking for monetary rewards.

    Rauru is a Zonai, but he also holds the title of King of the Owls, and owls are important in Zonai artifacts. Also, keep in mind that Rauru shares a name with the Sage of Light in OoT, and that Rauru has the form of an owl when he gives link advice in Hyrule from the sacred realm. Satori might just be the sage of light from OoT.

    The irony of collecting Bubbl Gems. By collecting the gems of greed, Koltin did achieve enlightenment. Koltin gave away all his valuables away to Link as Link gave the Bubbl Gems in exchange. So, did they avoid the act of Greed by freely giving away what they possessed? Or was this legend mere misunderstanding of the dangers. Of forces they don’t clearly understand, like the Secret Stones before it became a forbidden practice?

    The game leads you to believe you're just hunting down these bubblfrogs for their gems...but this explanation makes a LOT more sense, for Link and everything else. That the bubblfrogs are a sort of corrupted form, and you're freeing the blupees from their influence.

  • @Shibalechien
    @Shibalechien 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    Wow I believe your analysis is spot on.
    Bubbulfrogs remind me of No face from Spirited Away, and I guess it is not really surprising considering how much botw/totk are inspired by Miyazaki films.
    No face is depicted as a greedy spirit and the more it consumes and hoards wealth, the uglier it gets. So just as you explain in the video, I think these creatures end up becoming a Bubbulfrog as a result of their greediness exactly like No face.
    Also Link not obsessing over the gems is a good parallel with Chihiro who represents a pure hearted person in the film.
    Anyway great analysis as always! I love your content!

      No Face turned corrupt after eating that greedy frog spirit. It was intended as a punishment, but No Face ended up cursing himself in the process. However Chihiro, who never took any gold, was not greedy, and No Face sought to genuinely reward her. However she rejected that too and even helped him despite that, giving him medicine that made him vomit the very thing that corrupts him. In this case, Link is both Chihiro and the medicine.

I reckon the stone will change color in order to show if you're good or not. So maybe it also changes you on your long run intentions anyway.

    My head-canon is that Bubbul Frogs are Blupees that have consumed others of its kind. As has been pointed out in other places, if you look closely, their faces are comprised of four Blupee faces. When the are vanquished, they drop a gem with 3 sets of Blupee antennae and another Blupee that runs away, totaling to 4 Blupees, the same as it has on its face.
    If this is true, then maybe Bubbul frogs are considered ‘lost’ beings because they attempted to become something stronger.

    Interesting stuff. Personally I thought the chunky frogs were some of the rabbit things that had been trapped in the caves for a very long time. They had been sealed when whatever sealed the caves. They became kinda corrupted or transformed into the frogs over the centuries. That's why the rabbit things always lead us to the caves and then vanish. They led us to trapped corrupted brethren and we freed them by knocking them down and out.

    Link can see Koroks, the Blupees, Satori and was chosen by the Master Sword. He's a pure spirit, so perhaps he's cleansing the darkness from corrupted Blupees in the same way Rauru's "Blessing of Light" can cleanse the darkness lingering in Link's body after Link's right arm was crippled by Ganondorf's Gloom attack. Link has the ability to remove darkness and corruption, and he cannot be affected by corruption itself even when he was overwhelmed by Gloom.

    Did you mention the Blupees that spawn out of a dead Bubbulfrog don't drop rupees if you hit them? I might've missed it but either way that's another point to support either the idea that Bubbulfrogs are the bloated Blupees who were refusing to part with their rupees, or the link between the bubbul gems and rupees. Maybe the gem is just a massive amalgamation of all the rupees they should have given up before.
    Or come to think of it, maybe the gem is an ingrown rupee that needs to get cut out so the blupee can be healthy again and start growing more rupees naturally.

    An interesting theory. I'm just confused about why the gems work the way they do for Koltin, then. If hoarding these treasures out of greed stops one from being a true spirit, or if they symbolize doubt itself that prevents the bearer from achieving enlightenment, I'm having trouble understanding why giving a great number of the gems to a human wouldn't just corrupt them into something akin to a Bubbulfrog, rather than turning them into a spirit. It would make more sense with this theory if, after Koltin ate all the gems, he turned into some eldritch horror, an amalgamation of souls and faces, perhaps similar in shape to a Frox, which Link would have to kill in a boss fight. Then, perhaps after Link removed all the gems from him again, he would transform into a spirit.

    • @geek2621
      @geek2621 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      He gives away all of his treasures to Link in exchange for them, and he doesn’t hoard them. He essentially destroys them. And in sending Link to hunt down the Bubblefrogs, he’s freeing cursed Blupees. Maybe it’s his reward from the Satori for his role in freeing the cursed blupees, while Link’s reward is the mystic armor.

    • @KarmatheCorgi
      @KarmatheCorgi 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I have a theory on that because I thought the same thing. Either the gems only transform a collector into a monster if you only hoard them and don't consume them (consuming them would make them useless to be spent so a true greedy person would probably never want to waste them but rather store them away and only by consuming them do you prove you understand their power) OR they aren't the original thing that was hoarded but rather a byproduct of the creation and subsequent freeing of the spirit from their greedy form. The gem perhaps being so beautiful and enticing due to its nature as a physical representation of the beauty of excess wealth and greed, but by consuming it; using it up instead of hoarding it your soul takes the lessons that were learned by the previous lost souls about the cost of greed and then you are free to become a blupee. That's why it takes so many gems though because you have to prove that you really are willing to take all the lessons from the previous lost souls.

    You know what would have been a better execution for the Demon Dragon fight in tears of the Kingdom? This:
    Right after swallowing the stone and transforming, Ganon ignores Link and flies into outer space to coat the entire planet in gloom using his breath. as Link helplessly watches the gloom fall from the sky, the sages come to and give their secret stones to Link, which then transform him not into a dragon, but into a godlike, winged being bathed in divine light and resembling Fierce Deity Link from Majora's Mask. Link then flies into space to confront Ganon, and a fight kind of similar to the one with Jubileus The Creator from Bayonetta ensues.

      You don’t need to paste this on all of his videos. I know this from Story Explained Part 3. It doesn’t need to be here.

      @@paulrance5445 Hate when "Zelda fans" do that: A.J Thomas, Methodius, that guy who keeps talking about Marin no longer being a seagull anymore. ¿Why do they keep doing that?

      He doesn’t need to- it’s implied not to be directed to him.
      Of course, you probably want him to see it, which is fair, but pasting it on multiple videos is not the way- however neither is begging for likes.

    In TOTK if you place a fruit in the basket beneath a cherry tree, Satori will come and show you the caves, as if its asking you to free the cursed Blupees

    Another interesting parallel with Tingle: in Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, he loses rupees instead of health when attacked, just like when you're wearing the armor.

    Great to see the man back in action, and back to doing theories! Can’t wait to see what other mysteries he discusses!

    Loved the theories in this video! I doubt there's a connection, but the Blupee/Bubbulfrog/Bubbulgem "antennae" remind me a lot of that spirit plant/branch thing from Skyward Sword's Spirit Realm that you had to find all the seeds for. Since they're all "Spirit" things, I thought it was an interesting comparison.

    I'm so glad someones officially laid out a theory like this. Like a month ago a lot of these threads about Bubbelfrogs and Jin Chan and etc suddenly struck me. I tried to share it on Reddit but I'm not skilled with coherently putting information together like this vid does!
    Great work 👏 👍

    I think the third brother to kilton and Kolton is Sayge from the due shop. He sort of looks like them but he definitely sounds like them when he is dying something. He makes that same high pitched sound

    Satori veing a sage would make it even more wholesome considering who the creature is based made in honor of. Like Satoru Iwata himself is a sage.
