This only a small selection of photographs and pictures of of the Gravesend Yesturyear site on FACEBOOK. With over 2000 images and memories of Gravesend / Northfleet in kent England, river thames.
I lived in Gravesend from 1958 til 1969 and that was from the age of six to seventeen and some of the best years of my life. I ended up going to sea, the river was a big part of my life and my old man was a sailor, who I loved and hated in equal measure! Yeah, great times we had, there were few restrictions on us in those days and we took full advantage of it. The shot of the swimming pool brought back memories, we spent some glorious summers down there, nice video.
Born and bred there until I moved away in 1969. My father still lived there until 4 years ago, he's now 96! You're right about it being a sinking ship. absolutely ruined by possibly the worst councillors in the UK. Not so much under investment as NO investment.... It said it all when the council decided to change the area name to Gravesham... A town and it's environs with huge historical interest left to rot. The swimming pool - I spent countless hours down there in the summers, what a loss,
yep decades of tory councillors, who even got the boot from the tory party, but are still in power, all rotting away, ive been to all of europe , east europe and even iran, and the streets are better cared for , no grafitti vandalism and dumped trash, potholes...ugly housing, bad planning...
cheyne15 I agree .( Born there .moved in 1966) It's now a real MESS! MORE LIKE A FOREIGN COUNTRY! Dr Who, where are you.. I want to go back! Anyone want to come with me?
People have asked me why i added the titanic theme ...well its because Gravesend is also a sinking ship...and thanks to uncaring local councillors its going down fast at the head....hence titanic..
Ah yes, lots of memories... Those ABC minors badges! We used to go there on Saturday mornings 6d ( about 2p) to get in... I've still got my original Minors badge.. an earlier 1950"s design. Also I have deposited photographs of old Gravesend in the reference library ( ask to see thier photo file). Things such as an EARLY pic of Lion Garage Lion Cycle Stores.. and one of Kings Farm Stores, which used to be next to White Hill school., plus. a few others. These are all from my days of researching Gravesend history. 😊.
May i just add that the origional facebook group gravesend yesturyear was closed down due to hackers posting porn...since then we have reopened a new group gravesend yesteryear....
I miss it too, moved there in 1980 newly wed, my hubby passed away from cancer 2011. I now live in Worcester I miss the old place but it’s changed so much I hear.
