North Carolina Yellow Sally - Great Smoky Mountain Fly Tying Series

  • Another popular fly from the Great Smoky Mountains, the North Carolina Yellow Sally is an excellent stonefly imitation whenever the big yellows are on the water. This Roger Lowe variant is an easy to tie fly and can be varied a bit with the body and hackle color. If you're going to spend any time in the trout waters of the GSMNP, this will be a good fly pattern to have with you.
    Hook: Dry fly #12-16
    Thread: Yellow or cream
    Body: Yellow (PMD) or cream
Wing: Elk hair, light or natural
Hackle: Rooster dry fly, light to medium dun
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday).

Thanks Dave. I think the next in the Smoky Mountain series is the coolest looking yet. It's an Apple Green Caddis emerger. I'll have it up either tomorrow or Friday. Thanks for watching friend!

While I was in the Pisgah last week I found the tiniest stone that was this color. I couldn’t find anything in the shop to mimic it closer but a more yellow sally worked well for me that week. Glad I found this pattern on here. Thanks for the great content!

Great job, Matt. I prefer the longer, flatter wing on stonefly dries. This pattern color-modified and scaled down would work great for the little green stones on a local brookie stream.

Thanks James! I'm sure it would be easy to tie in green, but I imagine the smaller you make it, the harder it will be to get the elk hair wing to not look like a generic elk hair caddis. There's a little black stonefly here in Maryland (Gunpowder and Morgan Run) that shows up in late winter and early spring. I'm wondering if I could tweak this pattern to work for them. Possibly so, I'll have to experiment. Thanks again for watching! Cheers -Matt

This ones a killer. I used this one to c and r 35 trout in a two hour span in the big bend down from elkmont, in to this day, the biggest yellow stone hatch I’ve seen in the mountains. It was like an exploded giant bag of movie popcorn suspended mid air above the stream. Trout out of the woodwork. Every drift was smashed by a fish, but I imagine any yellow dry would have produced. Yellow stims trimmed on the bottom are also deadly out there.

Holy cow!! That's the kind of day we dream of! I have got to get out to Montana for a fishing trip. The only western water I've fished was the Middle Fork of the Salmon River this summer. Thanks for the note my friend!

Nice job Sir. That looks like one that would be fun to try. Appreciated the tip on getting the wing to lay a little flatter. Those loose wraps worked like a charm. Great video Matt.

I can't wait! I'm trying to steer my wife toward NC for our spring break this year. She might say "no way" since I usually talk us into going on family vacations near great trout water. But sometimes I'm successful. :-)

@@SavageFlies That's too funny! Yeah, it's the same here at my house. Luckily we found a little spring creek near Boone, NC a few years back that has a house we all (the whole fam) really love. My wife keeps booking that place for our Summer vacation so I keep singing her praises on 'always finding the best spots.' Ha ha ha ... she's no fool, but she's not above being praised either. The biggest I've caught is 15 or 16 inches, but I catch 'em consistently in July, in the South and they are all wild.

Thanks Bob! Yeah, this is a good one to have. It did great for me in southwest Virginia this summer. I think the brook trout probably thought it was a small grasshopper, but it fooled a good many of them. :-)

Thanks Harold! I've only gotten to fish down there a few times-- Tuckasegee, Oconaluftee, Deep Creek most recently. But I grew up in north Georgia and got to fish the Gatlinburg area as a kid. The history of mountain fly fishing in western NC is amazing. I got to visit the museum in Bryson City a couple years ago and loved it! I need to make a trip back. Thanks again for the comment and I'm glad you found the channel. There are at least a couple dozen more Smoky Mountain patterns I want to tie. :-)

Hey Matt, why would you use a waxed thread? Love the fly!👍

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Really just for the stickiness of it. Sometimes it helps slippery materials from slipping, and certainly helps hold dubbing on the thread. Some furs like beaver, camel, angora and some of the bigger rodents have really coarse hair that is hard to dub.
