It appears to be a decent car. I would pull that head and look at those cylinders and if it's too bad try and find a motor. Good luck with it. Thanks for the video 👍
My Uncle had one of those wagons and it ran awesome. It was great in the snow. On the highway and out on dirt roads covered in a good foot or two of snow. He did brag about the power of the 6 cylinder all the time. I don't think that he ever complained about it once, not that I knew anyway. I hope that y'all get it running and it does the kid good by running strong.
Oh yeah you get one with a straight 6 in them and they are tough cars. Not the greatest on fuel but they will drive through anything and are reliable as hell.
Awesome find. I have an 81 eagle sx4 in that color and an 82 wagon that is just copper brown. I'm glad you looked it over good at the end I figured it have subframe rot. Could be saved if someone really wanted to put the effort in. However you have some good parts there. Find another one make one out of two. These cars are so much fun and go anywhere. Always a great conversation piece as well.
Can’t win them all. I’m glad you took the time to help the boy. I say it was a win anyways because learned something and still probably had fun despite the heat and a seized engine.
I remember my mom and dad bought identical AMC eagles. I've read in her diary now this was longer long after she passed away and they bought those eagles when I was at my moved on and got married in my own house. But they were constantly at the local gas station always a problem with the carburetor choke not running well.
Great job Tim working with this young man who has an interest in cars sharing knowledge and time.Always enjoy your videos. Would love to go on your adventures with you my self !!
This rig would be a challenge, but worth saving. For being in the elements for so long, she's in pretty solid condition. Time for some vinegar and acetone down the troublesome cylinders. Let it rest. Soak those valve lifters with same mix and make sure the valves are lose (pull and soak that carb too). Pull the head off. Block-and-mallet time on those pesky pistons! Hone 'em. Those AMC sixes are much more resilient than given credit for. That mill has enough punch for any 16 year old. Ahhh, the promise of youth and time! Great video!
Love it I own a 1985 eagle wagon would love to find a factory console like what this eagle has or one with the gauge cluster. Durable cars the reason why I bought one my father had one when I was 7-8 years old.
It's so weird that what some people including myself will pay thousands for a will it run type of muscle car that's been sitting in a barn for 30 or 40 years. The weird part is back in the 80s that same muscle car that you'll pay thousands for today would have most likely been given to you so you'll haul it off for them. Amazing how things change with time!
Love how the vid starts: "Man, this takes me back..." LOL! A 1980...I remember when those were brand new. Wait. I think I just dated myself. PFFFF!! 🙃😇
An Eagle Wagon is really a good car for a Teenager to drive.......easy to work on.....built tough like a jeep, Jeep Engine and AWD and the coolness of being a Wagon.
I use to have a 1982 AMC Eagle SX/4 it was brown on brown with manual everything it had the 4.2 liter engine in it and it was a great car. I have always wanted to find another one but not a Eagle but a Spirit. They look the same but the spirit is rear wheel drive instead of being all wheel drive like the eagle.
there is a reason they changed to a different 4x4 system in 82, these ate front cv joints like candy. i had a80 and quickly sold it after its second cv joint failed in 20k
i love my '85 Eagle. got it for $500 trade labor. she's got 81K original miles. i daily drive it. im getting ready to throw an NP229 transfer case in it so i've got low range 4WD but i can retain the viscous fluid coupling that acts like a limited slip axle
Sitting 20+ years..... Go ahead and remove the head for educational purposes. Otherwise, just remove the whole engine and transmission. Go through it all. Make it reliable. Install an original replacement automatic transmission if possible. I don't know your state smog rules. Perhaps consider replacement 304 engine? Although not always easy to find.
Front axle bolts to the block on these. Not to say a 304 swap hasn't been done. But a lot of work and fabrication. Also oil pan and front differential don't play together
This was the end of amc, they sold the rights to the Jeep name and closed the doors, amc was ran at the time by a bunch of old men from ww2 that drug the company into the ground, sad but true

Nah, just get a cylinderscope!
@@American-Motors-Corporation That will work 👍

I remember those cars being pretty popular back in the day! Nice you were able to help this young guy out Tim.

I quite like these. Good on you for teaching the kid about old cars. I am sure he really enjoys it.

And in the '80s they were just old cars that were fairly common now not so much
Very Kool Find Tim

Thanks for saving another classic 👍✊
Great Job on getting the amc out it’s good your bring young blood into this
I remember when I was 16 like it was yesterday.. 43 now lol
AMC was ahead of their time with Eagle!
there is a reason they changed to a different 4x4 system in 82, these ate front cv joints like candy. i had a80 and quickly sold it after its second cv joint failed in 20k
Love these!
I got tail lights and fender flares for these.

Glad to see them still alive!
Harbor freight has plenty of glove 🧤, and they keep your hands from getting hurt , lol good job thanks BigAl California
Was that 4 wheel drive right very collectible
In this case I'm compelled to say "sorry". The paperwork is probably worth more than the car!
Are you kidding...Paul Bunyan advising...😝....
Sweet!
Pull it down the road and pop the clutch, that might break it loose, don't give up on it!!!!
What ever became of this car? Is it available for purchase?
It sat here for a while, then one of his high school friends bought it
Look at the size of the AC compressor.
Probably the distributor! Pull it before forcing that engine around. Those 4.0 ltr 6 cyl is tough as hell, I loved my '97 Cherokee Sport.
These have a 4.2 258 or a 4 cyl Iron duke. The 4.0 is the better engine tho, has way better head design
I’ve seen Jeep cherokee 4.0 in lines placed in those.
Weird, it was converted to a stick car. I wonder what tranny they put in?
😎👍😎
👍

Need to invest into a chainsaw by the time you cut one branch with the saws all you can have everything cut down with the chainsaw
maybe not so stuck, let it sit for avail. boy needs training... like RESTORED !
The Eagle was a more stylish car than the Pacer. Now that was an ugly car body! AL B.
I had one sorry to say but it was a turd
I'm not so sure it's worth free Mr. Gp...
