I compare the new Sony Alpha a7III mirrorless camera to the A7s II which has been one of the best selling hybrid cameras for video shooters. I compare the 4K UHD quality in 24fps and 30P and cover the Crop that you get in that mode. We also compare 1080P video quality up to 120 frames per second. Next, we look at in body image stabilization and video autofocus as well as rolling shutter. Of course low light and high ISO performance is what everyone really wants to see so we cover that in detail towards the end of the video. The biggest difference for me is usability like rear lcd brightness in sunlight, dual card slots, screen dimming, and battery life.

3 Questions for the A7III please:
1) Do you still get a blackout on the display when recording 4k if you plug in an HDMI monitor?
2) You said that you can power it with an external power bank... in that case, does it require a battery to be plugged in like with the other Sony cameras?
3) There aren't many videos online discussing HLG vs Slog. I personally like using Cine4 for dark interiors and Slog2 for exterior sunny, because Slog produces noise in the shadows. So 2 quick questions here: Are the shadows of Slog better on the a7III (because overall it's much better in low light than others)? and can HLG be considered a middle ground between Cine4 and Slog? (how are the shadows in HLG?) -> I would love to see one of your test videos for this new mode compared to the others.

Your AF information around 11:00 was great! My biggest gripe with my A7R2 has been filming 4K video of moving subjects. If I'm standing still and switch to manual focus, it's spot-on. Manual focus isn't optimal for all video situations though. Thanks so much for the in-depth review. You sold me on A7III upgrade for video =)

I really appreciate the effort you put into this video, Max. I’m sure many a7sii owners like myself are interested in how the a7iii compares. I’m immediately jealous of the AF system as I do a lot of gimbal work where PD really is beneficial. I’m jealous of the touchscreen too. However, I’m not about to sell my a7sii for an a7iii, but given the specs of the latter, I am super excited about what the a7siii might bring. I’m hoping for the a7iii specs + 10bit and 4K/60. Good information BUT you need to USE SAME LENSES in both the cameras for comparison. One is a G- lens on A7III and the other is a simple Sony lens on A7SII. It does makes difference.
Both were G lenses, I'm too doubtful about the auto focus stability of A7sii because have seen a hell smooth from some work but here jus lost. Don't know what would be the reason of this

Great job Max! An idea for the future. You mentioned that you can get a much better image after you de-noise the A7S II. It would be nice to see a side-by-side shot with noise/de-noised. I'm not a professional videographer, so I'm curious how much you can recover. Thanks man... love your content!
Max! For filmaking you will choose gh5s or a7III? I have gh5 with 12-35mm but I need more iso. Get gh5s or switch to sony?

How does the 1080p 120 video autofocus compare to the a6500/a6300? Right now I have A7R2 for photos and a6300 for slow motion video but I am thinking of selling both and just using the A7iii. What do you think?

Max, i noticed on other people a7III low light videos. Theres a blinking pixel in the bottom of the frame. Can you look it up. That could be a problem. I dont know its a bug or something.

Great review Max. Have you done testing with the S Log profiles for the a7iii? Are there still noise issues where you need to expose to the right and then drop the exposure in post to decrease noise in the shadows?
heard the a7iii screen blacks out in 4k with hdmi. Can you verify if the a7iii disables the screen in 4k when using hdmi? (if this is the case I will have to stick with the a7sii, as I mainly shoot 1080p due to that blackout, need to send director a monitor feed). do you have the option to crop in with slo-mo on the a7iii (1:1). if you lift the shadows to be as bright as the a7sii how does the noise compare?
I’d be interested to know what picture profile you used. The a7iii has a more favorable red shift as apposed to the yellow on the a7sii

Hi Max, great video :) As an a7sii user I have been frustrated you can't display shooting info over HDMI when shooting 4k so you need to look between the camera screen and your HDMI monitor. Is this something you can now do on the a7iii?

hey Max, are you aware of the veiling/ghosting artifacts on the a6500/6300? it was mentioned in the cinema 5d review of the a6300. was wondering if there is any sign of that on the a7 III since it does seem to use significantly more noise reduction than the a7s II and also oversamples

Nice and informative video, Let me ask something a bit off topic, do you practice some form of martial arts like Kyokushin or Muay Thai? or do you do a lot of knuckle dips? cuz your knuckles say so and they were in the frame many times so I noticed that :P I was a Kyokushin practitioner by the way :)

Max, this is seriously an outstanding review. I needed to quickly decide between these cameras for a client. I watched your review (at 2X speed), and you saved me loads of time and focused on exactly the right points. I was about to go A7sii because i know it and like it but for this instance of a mini video studio with adequate studio lighting, its A7III all the way!

What video profile did you use in the camera for both? Did you color grade? Because, the colours of the A7iii looks incredibly more natural than the yellow-is Asii
Does it make sense to me to buy this camera and use it with APS-C Sigma 18-35 lenses and MC11 adapter? Will I get the goodness of full frame camera with this lens while shooting in crop mode?

Well i just returned my a6500 and ordered the A7iii to go along with my a7sii. Now I think the only time I will ever use my A7sii is as a B cam and for low light situations: like wedding receptions and such. Dope review.
the lenses I have are 16-35mm f4 and 55mm 1.8.......I do mostly business, corporate, and wedding videography.
What lens should I add to my collection?

Hey Max, for the A73 what are the workarounds for a vari-angle display whcih does not become huge or cost a bomb?
I did think of using wifi with my ipad/iphone but I was told you lose face recognition autofocus in 4k when you do that.
