  • I have taken delivery of my first ever Electric Vehicle, the MG4 Trophy Long Range. I'm a petrol head at heart and love my ICE cars, so I am bringing you a real life update of what it's like to live with an EV and how the MG4 stacks up against the classic VWs and Skoda Superb Daily that I'm so used to.
    Thanks for watching and stay tuned for future videos.
    Check out my other channel / @golfmk2 for content on the Mk2 Golf (and others) that I refer to.

    Thanks, I am sure you will enjoy your ownership. Nearly every EV owner I know or have heard of swear they will never go back to ICE, EVs are just so much better to drive and if you have home charging on Octopus intelligent you will save a fortune.

      @OfficialMacMotors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      So far I'm loving it. I enjoy the performance, the quietness and the gadgets it comes with. It actually makes my diesel Superb feel quite antiquated, which I was not expecting! The Skoda will remain as our family car for my wife for the time being though, as it owes us nothing and the Mk2 Golfs are our classic playthings. But as an appliance, the EV is superior by far.

    • @AlanTov
      @AlanTov 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OfficialMacMotorsjust out of interest would you call an automatic ICE car ‘an appliance’?
      If a fridge was powered by a diesel generator would that still be ‘an appliance’?
      Or is ‘an appliance’ anything with and electric motor? Like quite a few trains, steel furnaces etc

    • @OfficialMacMotors
      @OfficialMacMotors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @AlanTov I think as it's something which I rely on to do a daily task, which is to get me to and from work as reliably and comfortably as possible, then yes, my diesel Superb would be considered an appliance. Same as a fridge. It needs to do a task, so how it is powered is irrelevant, so long as it fulfils that requirement. Therefore the EV is no different. For me it will (hopefully) serve a purpose and just by the way of the tech being different and associated costs being favourable it'll be saving me money.
      However, our Mk2 Golfs, which are not required to do anything more than be fun, retro and attend car related events, mean they're more toys or for pleasure. If one of those doesn't work (which is quite regularly 😅) then it doesn't matter, as they're not relied upon.
      This is purely my perception, and other peoples' may differ.

      Interesting. So here in the UK we have different trims, SE and Trophy. Trophy comes with a few bits of extra kit as standard, different indicator design, double rear spoiler, 18" wheels etc.
      Each trim also has different range options, the standard range (51kWh), Long Range (64kWh) and Extended Range (Trophy trim only and 77kWh).
      There's also the XPower, which is also 64kWh but 4 wheel drive and a supercar eater.

    On the cleanliness at delivery subject, I once prepared a Black Nissan Pickup for delivery to a very critical customer . Yeah there's not much else I can find fault on it, which is saying something. Even my Skoda has a number of flaws, so no car is perfect by any means.
      As for cleanliness, I completely understand road grime, even mud splatter as it was driven 120 miles to me, so that would be to be expected. However, it is clear that the person who cleaned it really made a pigs ear of it, using either a bucket of actually muddy water or a very dirty sponge. But hey, no damage done. Just a bit of an avoidable daft thing to have to mention to the lease company when they ring to ask how it all went.

    I purchased an Corsa-e 3 years ago for my daily commute of 67 miles. Not the car I was expecting to buy at the start, but the spreadsheet said that or the e208 were the front runners in my needs/budget category. I can honestly say the spreadsheet was correct! There are more choices today and good deals on many so my choice would probably be different we’re I to make it today, but honestly no regrets, despite what the haters think.
    The car has done all I asked of it. And after 3 years, the experience is still as positive as when I first got it, so I’ve no doubt you can expect similar as the MG4 is an excellent car. As long as you can charge at home on an EV tariff and the car will meet your typical commuting needs then what is there to not like?
    As to running costs, I saved £1500 on fuel (vs my diesel Golf at 65mpg) the first year and around £1000 - £1200 the last two (because the price of electricity went up). If you do the miles, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that the purchase price gap between an equivalent EV and the equivalent ICE car will close rapidly as you drive it. I estimate that you will probably save somewhere between £2000 and £2500 in the next twelve months based on your usage. It could be more, but I will assume you still have some tips and tricks to learn and I don’t know your driving style.
    Tyre use will depend on you, more than the car. For me I find it about the same mileage to maybe 10% worse than the Golf, with the same usage pattern. Hardly eating through tyres is it? You will probably get through the first set quicker though, because there are certain EV features you will want to enjoy and experience for a while 😊. Likewise, brakes and brake dust. That’s a definite myth. EV drivers don’t use their brakes hardly at all! They use the regen instead, so brake usage is far less than an ICE car. If anything you may find you get corroded discs as you don’t use them enough. 😮. After 52,000 miles, my pads were recently checked by Vauxhall at 80%, so could last 100-150k.
    An EV is not electric utopia. An EV is not an answer to all ills or climate change. It’s just a different and interesting way to power a car, with some pros and some cons. As long as you don’t plan to drive from Lands End to John O’Groats everyday and you charge at home, you should have a very positive experience.
    Nice to see a MK2. I never did get to own one. Subscribing just to see more of that!

    • @OfficialMacMotors
      @OfficialMacMotors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is such great feedback and experience on your time with an EV so far. I predict, on the appropriate EV tariff I could be saving as much as £200 per month, so your estimates are pretty much bang on. And like you, my Skoda would do 65mpg. But the other factor was insurance on my Skoda was very high, plus I go through a set of tyres every year at £700 for all four. With the lease scheme these additional costs are covered under the plan, so more Stealth savings.
      I think I'll be very happy with the car. Its a great bit of kit, certainly different to what I've ever driven before, but a nice novelty right now. It certainly isn't going to change the world, stop global warming or anything like that, and you can question the methods in sourcing the battery materials for production, but battery tech will only improve and the infrastructure Will too. Plus its not like extracting oil isn't damaging either...
      As for the Mk2 Golfs, thank you! They're a great fun labour of love. I have a channel dedicated to them if you're interested. More road trips, repairs and events based. youtube.com/@golfmk2?si=lAajQiQYSy5GWZwN

      @@OfficialMacMotors Subscribed! We drove Golf’s for almost 20 years so love them. I’d always aimed to get a GTD one day and got close, but then the world changed! Didn’t go EV with VW as they weren’t ready and were too expensive for me, so the Vauxhall is a ‘gap filler’ while the market matures for EVs. It’s done Stirling work and has the motorway scars to prove it! Oh, battery degradation is maybe 5%ish on the road after 3 years and 52k. I guess Clarkson was wrong. 🤷‍♂️
      Once you are comfortable with how it operates, you’ll probably find filling up to 90% is ok in Winter. It’s always the last percents that put the long term strain on battery if you do it everyday. It’s a squeeze to get those last lithium ions into and onto the electrodes and that causes the degradation. Same at the low end. That said, I never worry if I fill up to 100%. It’s no different in principle from running in the red rev zone on an ICE car. You do it when you need to but not all the time.
      There’s loads you’ll find out over the next few months about how to get the most from your EV, and I won’t spoil it, so have fun!

I actually saw a range of over 300m in summer but don't even see 200m in these cold winter days. The AEB is worse than the LKA in that I think it is actually dangerous. Mine kicked in when I was about to overtake a cycylist. There was absolutely no danger but the car decided to an emergency stop for no reason and could have caused the car behind to hit me so for me that is even more important to switch to Alert rather than Alert+AEB because I think it could actually cause an accident. Also, it would be good if MG actually gave us a software update which would keep our preferred settings rather than have to select every time but it is now so much part of my routine when getting into the car that I have gotten used to it. Once I have the car configured as I want it is the best driving car I have ever owned. Very happy.

Overtaking a cyclist, crossed the white lines to encroach into the other side of the road and the lane assist kicked in and nearly steered me into the cyclist! If nothing else it maintains good habits, like indicating when passing, but it didn't half take me by surprise! I too set mine just to alert now when I set off. I think it's an NCAP regulation that they default to 'on' at the start of every journey, so unlikely we'll see a change, unfortunately.

My options where MG4, MG5, but finance deal were too expensive at the time. Love the Skoda Enyaq for space, Hyundai Ionic 5 too, but where well over the 40k. So look at a second hand Zoe but the interest on payment was nearly 25% on top of the price of the car. So ended up with Tesla Model 3 in August purely on finance cost, discount and 0% finance. Love it every time we drive it. We also have a 2005 Mercedes silk and a Veg oil burning Nissan Elgrand. I don't enjoy driving these, an now have to replace my Elgrand failed MoT due to rust. So just order a Citroen E Berlingo got it for space practicality, 7 seats and again finance deal (small discount and 0%). I’ve got the SE long range, had my first EV three years ago a Old Hyundai Ioniq, I love the MG my only gripe is the range takes a big hit in very cold weather, 20 25% down from the 280 + during the summer months. No way would I go back to petrol or diesel.

    A 10 minute vudeo and it didn't leave the drive? Im more interested on how far you go on a charge, how much a charge costs, if you can charge in 5 minutes, and pay by cash. Currently costs me around 10p a mile in my ICE.
    Also interested to see you come back in 10 years and hear about how often the brake pads and tyres needed replacing and how their costs compared to your other car.
    When all these things can be answered by the EV proponents it might move higher in my thoughts.

    • @OfficialMacMotors
      @OfficialMacMotors  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This was a first impression video, based on the car being delivered and my initial thoughts.
      I also have videos on the driving, ownership over the first few weeks, public charging and I'll continue to update as my time with the car continues.
      Also, as the braking is undertaken by regenerative braking through the motor for a majority of the time, I've read a lot of EV drivers can go 100k miles without having to change pads, and actually the discs requiring replacement through rust due to lack of use.

    • @angleseyandy9110
      @angleseyandy9110 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OfficialMacMotors thanks for the reply, though some of my questions can be answered "no" before you bought it anyway (such as being beholden to apps and bank cards, how long you have to sit and wait for charging if you go on a longer trip). Yes I've seen your 2 week video. By now you'll know how much it's costing you per mile though.
      I don't object to the principle of different vehicles but what I've seen so far has virtually no positives and all very heavily negative.
      A little led on the charge socket is of no interest if I can't get to my parents and back without paying 85p kWh for the pleasure of stopping for hours at charging point I need a smartphone for.
      An EV is only ever going to be of use for a 2nd runaround local vehicle, for those with the ability to charge at home.
      Good luck at getting 100k out of the brakes...

    • @OfficialMacMotors
      @OfficialMacMotors  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @angleseyandy9110 I think I'll best leave you to your pre-conceived perception of EVs, especially those of having to charge for 2 hours and lack of understanding on how regenerative braking works. The fact I managed 90k on the pads on my Skoda Superb, which is of comparable weight and will be used identically, would confirm the owners' experiences.

      If relying on public chargers as your main means of charging the car, then you won't save money, as super fast ones cost about the same as petrol.
      So couple that with the purchase/PCP/lease costs and you're not saving anything.
      The savings come from being able to charge overnight at home on a cheap EV tariff.

    A friend has an MG and is disappointed with it. Says it's built to a price (low price). Suspension parts are flimsy, very plasticy interior. Will be interesting to see your follow-up videos. Hope you give an honest opinion...

    • @OfficialMacMotors
      @OfficialMacMotors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting. Having come from a Skoda Superb, which although VAG is not without fault and does have some questionable areas of quality, and a 33 year old Golf, which whilst is well screwed together, I've taken it apart more times than I'd care to mention and the pastics are now old and brittle. So my comparison against those is that the MG4 does not feel cheap by any means. A few scratchy plastics in the cabin, but they're where you wouldn't naturally be touching without making a point of doing so, so not an issue for me. As for the suspension quality, I can't comment because as far I'm concerned it's comfortable, yet has a sporty feel at the same time. But what the quality of parts are like, only longer ownership can ascertain.

    I think the depreciation will be more than any money you save on running costs. Plus you would have had out of pocket Govt costs and tax's on the purchase and I have been reading that insurance costs are increasing for BEV's. Not sure where you think your savings are?

    • @OfficialMacMotors
      @OfficialMacMotors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It's a lease car through salary sacrifice, so insurance, tax, servicing, tyres and accident cover are all included in the cost, whilst also saving on income tax paments. Meaning just the cost of charge (with home charger included) is what I have to pay for. So by my calculations I'll be saving around £200 per month, as my fuel alone is £400 per month and insurance is over £1000 per year in the Skoda. If I were paying out monthly finance costs on one of my cars it were replacing then I could factor that cost in too, but alas I own my cars outright. In fact, the car it replaced was my wife's 23 year old Audi, which we managed to sell, so pocketed money there too. The savings are plain to see access the board. 🙂
