LGR - Elder Scrolls: Battlespire - DOS PC Game Review

- It may not be The Elder Scrolls III, but it is the third game in the series! Battlespire is a first-person dungeon crawler adventure set in the land of Tamriel, and it's uh... not exactly great.

Background music is from the game soundtrack. The Apprentice footage is from a terrible montage on TH-cam, ha.
The naming of items isn't that different from daggerfall. I once got a magical piece of clothing called "casual pants of friendship"
Sounds like something a brony would wear.
My ex gf got the skirt of undeniable access. Thus ex.
I think there was a book or two about those pants
That's what I wear to the bar
I remember being so excited for this game. It was basically "Shut up and take my money" as soon as I heard about it. I saved up for weeks to buy it when it finally came out. I got it home and installed it and was so jazzed for an epic adventure.
I never even got out of that first room with the stupid scamp. Either the game would crash, glitch out, or I would die horribly from some monster. It was probably my very first video game disappointment. It's nice to see there was an actually end game I never saw. But apparently, I didn't miss much.
first time i played oblivion i had the same issue, but that was partially hardware. My screen was cheap and didnt show darkness in different shades, so anything shadowy or dark was just black, and i ended up being killed by invisible scamps over and over. Morrowind took me years to get into the actual storyline, i'd get off the boat and just wander in a random direct for hours. One of my first starts, i ended up walking straight fro the starting dock to the Ash Mountain, into a cave with a late level boss in it.
I guess they shouldn't have used the early Might & Magic titles as inspiration.
sounds like every Bethesta game ever made
Still, that always hurts v.v
Sorry but that is hilarious.
I love how the daedric crescent they plastered all over the box and contents basically becomes an obscure artifact in Morrowind.
Love ur pfp
"The crotch bugle is no guarantee of a successful jump." -Winston Churchill
I love the idea of Mehrunes Dagon being given the chance to invade Tamriel because the Apprentice killed himself by accidentally smashing his skull with a lever
I'd actually like to see them try to make a game with this same idea now days. A well crafted but linear game set in the Elder Scrolls universe that just tells one singular story.
I could see this being a great thing, except that the absolute last thing I want is another excuse not to make the TES6 game we need.
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind confirmed
But they delivered.
Oblivion was my favorite Elder scrolls game but Morrowind was a close second. I never even got a quarter way through the main quest but i logged hundreds of hours on that game.
I never got into Oblivion. I found the story boring and trite, the character models ugly as sin, gameplay imbalanced ans unfun... and the constant recycling of voice lines made most NPCs sound like they had multiple personality disorder.
@@Elyseon The leveling system in Oblivion just ruins the whole game. I know there's mods that "fix" it, but then it's not the same game. It's modded.
@@juansolo1617 god damn right i tried mod level sistem but how u say its modded and deleted it

LGR owes me a new keyboard.
Damn he got you 😂
Thought that said bulge
@@mcbadrobotvoice8155 you see what you want to see lol
oh god I had forgotten how bad the level geometry was ... perhaps I blocked that memory out for that game lol.
Never knew you watched LGR. :D
+Poseidon oh ya I've been a sub here for ages, I love LGR's vids
Same and same with your Besiege videos.
in morrowind the bad geometery was a bonus. I loved maxing out my jump skill and flying magic and just breaking the levels. I made tons of magicka potions and would just fly or hop across the map, fly over enemies. A few times I'd just find myself next to a late level boss without even coming across the quest. One time I killed a late level boss without knowing who he was while i was still pretty low level by burning through 50+ potions and all my food, then got a unique weapon. I miss that game, I need to get it on PC and screw around.
Got this for my birthday almost 20 years ago, still have the disk. Watching this review made me realize something: I remember Battlespire so fondly for the boobs (hey, a ten-year-old has to take what he can get) and the conversations with monsters. Getting the Fire and Frost daedra to fight against each other and not me made me feel smart, and opening a conversation was a nifty way of pausing the game while hearing something call me "Mortal". The combat was nice for the time at my age and RPG experience thanks to the way mouse movement affected weapon swings, but when shit hit the fan I just started swinging wildly. Must have looked funny.
The character creation stuff was also fun to mess around with. One time I maxed out Jumping just to see what would happen, and aside from falling to my death through walls I sometimes fell to my death in walls, and sometimes fell to the end of the level.
Battlespire is also responsible for my preference for Nords in Elder Scrolls games. I was never fond of Elves and at that time in my life had an unreasoning dislike for the French, so that left burning desert people or frozen desert people. I like the cold.
Also learned a bit on how to use the command prompt on Windows thanks to the game somehow uninstalling itself but not completely. My dad constantly regretted buying me this game so he didn't want to help me fix it, despite all promises of working harder at school. So I had to figure out how to uninstall Battlespire via DOS and reinstall it, and that was the second time this game made me feel smart.
Oddly enough I never beat it. Made it to the island level, but don't recall anything past that.
The ability to chin wag with a mortal enemy is brilliant...
"Hello, marauder."
"You're going to die slowly and painfully."
"Fascinating, I presume you're the one who will bring about my ghastly demise."
"Yes, savour your last mome..."
"Oh terribly sorry, I just accidently cut off your head."
I had no idea this game even existed lol
Haha, yeah it's largely ignored amidst the heaps of praise for Daggerfall and Morrowind!
Same,and I'd like to think I'm a gamer 😂🤣
Just wait till you hear 'bout Shadowkey
@@LGR Pretty much. I've played Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, and ESO, but not the spinoffs or Arena.
@@krabparrot5724 Dawnstar and Stormhold were assigned worse fates than Shadowkey. Practically no one knows they exist.
Honestly dude, I don't think I've ever disliked any of your videos!
+Chris Dakers Agreed! Even his review of a 'chair' was entertaining ;)
+bigemugamer haha yeah totally! :D
bigemugamer A Sims chair?
Well it is nice to know that they've kept the voice acting standards that they started with.
OMG the scamp sounds like Jar Jar Binks XD
The commentary on this video is so freaking hilarious. Great job, LGR.
"Actual roleplaying cut down" "Story you participate in but not control" My god Bethesda made Fallout 4 18 years ago!
MASTACHIEFPWN it’s a movie!
Morrowind was way to boring for me to get into. Oblivion and skyrim had right amount of complexity for me to have fun with it
@@CourierSiix Oblivion and Skyrim feel so empty compared to morrowind.
@@Gungus-v1g id rather have that and have an actual combat system and not RNG
@@CourierSiix The combat system is still pretty poor in Oblivion and Skyrim imo. For me TES is all about the quests, npc interactions and becoming more powerful. Morrowind does all of those things the best. I play Oblivion and Skyrim to take in all the beautiful scenery. I play Morrowind for an actual adventure.
Each to their own though.
The Bugle chip jumping mechanic is actually not a bad idea... Modern games usually have a more dynamic way of jumping, but back then it was just leaping into the abyss and hoping you go just far enough to hit the other platform instead.
I am adding the "Crotch Bugle" to my Skyrim.
you can talk to every enemy in this game and convince them not to fight? They should've called it socialspire.
@@alexdavis2658 the persona
Undertale: Battlespire
Battlespire: Torment or Planescape: Battlespire?
Underspire
I'm always amazed what a long way this franchise has come. Was Battlespire successful enough to fund the development of Morrowind or was Bethesda rich enough to afford such a deviation? Today a developer might be finished after doing this to a beloved series.
It was Arena and Daggerfall that were actually decent successes (alongside their many sports games and licensed stuff for movies like The Terminator) that kept Bethesda going back then! When Morrowind succeeded it brought them to the next level.
@@LGR Fun fact but you didnt need a license to make Terminator games at that time.
@@peb475 tell me more
It took me about three seconds too long to figure out the censorship puns. As for the game, I think I might try it eventually, but not before I get further in Daggerfall.
So this is basically the fallout tactics of the elder scrolls series?
+Spencer Dalling Fallout Tactics (to me) wasn't bad, but it did leave a lot to be desired in terms of story and flexibility.
+Spencer Dalling I replayed FT twice so far, so I can't agree with you on that comparison.
This here, that sounds more like Crusader of Might and Magic than anything else. At least for me.
+Spencer Dalling no it's the brotherhood of steel of the elder scrolls.
+Spencer Dalling Redguard was the Fallout tactics
More like ultima 9 without the massive disappointment but still shittyness
I actually still have this game packed away somewhere box an all. I always loved the ideas in this game. The enormous floating citadels ripped from the earth to float in the sky by sheer magic, always kinda wished they would be redone and added to a Elder scrolls game as a true location, even if its just int he form of one that fell from the sky and is mostly demolished.
I lost it at "Bugle corn chip." xD
+xkristixx Mmmmm.... I luv bugle corn chips P=
+xkristixx "a Bugle corn chip comes out of your crotch!" lolol
+xkristixx lmfao same, i was just about to make this exact comment. God I haven't had any of those in about 20 years.
yep that was the one that sent me over the edge
i LIKE bUGLES
We played it coop with 7 players on LAN (the game supports up to 8) and I have to say - it was a blast! Way better than even a single player Morrowind that came later. There is something magical in dungeon crawling in TES setting with a group of friends sitting together and talking to each other.
LMAO Morrowind planed for 1998 but it came out in 2002.
Duke Nukem: Hold my friggen beer. Tough shit!
Lord Gaben entered the chat.
The graphics would have been more reasonable if it came out in 98
"We'll get to to Morrowind eventually. You have my word."
*One year and four months later.
Totally worth the wait.
mmm don't we all miss that late 90's render distance? :D
No playable Argonians and Khajiits is already screaming like a massive disappointment from me.
BUT Shin Megami Tensei-like conversations with enemies seems intriguing.
I actually beat this legitimately back around 2001. Basically was a straight longblade/agility/restoration/alteration build that just put up shield spells, healed, and whacked things. I also found that punching the scamps in the 1st level could max out your agility so you wouldn't miss so often. Combine all that and I managed to beat it. Nowadays I don't have the patience though.
For the curious, you must get the GoG version. Many of the problems Clint points out are patched with GoG's pre-installed troubleshooting.
Battlespire is no Ultima Underworld or Legrnd of Grimrock, but I did rnjoy it. I did not encounter many of the bugs LGR had, and I thank GoG for that.
Glitchy, atrocious combat, idiotic AI, eh? I'd ask Bethesda to never change, but clearly they don't need my encouragement.
I started playing Battlespire after watching this review and honestly I am having a blast. I decided to min max so I am rolling with a naked fist only character and I am at the beginning of lvl 4 atm. I am enjoying it way more than I did Daggerfall....
Dang, 100-200 bucks for a copy? I got my hands on Battlespire (box and all) for like $20. Must've gotten lucky.
If that was anytime recently, then you are quite lucky!

+Lazy Game Reviews Will you do Oblivion too?
+MrXuliest Hopefully, Redguard first.
It always shocks me when a not particularly great game gets super valuable years down the road. I knew a guy who had an unopened game and an unopened anime that were both terrible, but they were worth almost $200 for the game and about $700-1000 for the anime. The anime was a low budget unknown anime from a studio who only made like 2 OVA's back in the early 80's before going out of business. It's one of those types of shows that MST3K would do, and then game wasnt much better. insanity.
numidium3 I got it for like £5 at a thrift store
When Wolfenstein and especially Doom started getting hot, a lot of the RPG making companies saw those games and thought "THIS IS THE NEXT BIG THING FOR RPG'S!" and rightly so. They immediately plunged into making their RPG's like Doom, but the problem is, they pretty much never got it right and everything turned into a clunky mess. Translating their usual turn based RPG's to the twitch based doom format was tougher than they thought. It was quite some time before someone gave us a proper 3D RPG where we could roam around doomlike without it being a clunky, crappy, mess. I can't think of one doomlike RPG that was done well back then when they were still navigating those waters.
They eventually got the first person RPG right, but not without growing pains. That was my point. When they first tried making them, they were crappy. They had to learn how to strike the balance between the "action" gaming that the doom arcade style had where you just ran around and shot things and RPG's had where when you attacked things, whether you hit or not, it was traditionally based on dice rolling and skills. It was just a while and several games before game companies actually found that balance in systems where the combat and jumping and such didn't feel clunky and uncontrollable half the time.
I would say Battlespire is more of Bethesda's take on Ultima Underworld (I + II) than Doom, though I definitely see some similarities to Doom in level design.
3:31 At the nord selection, that's actually a real picture of a real place, i have that exact picture on my desktop.
did you review "redguard" in the future?
(bad english, i know)
That is the next planned TES review.
Yay, I was just going to ask that.
+Lazy Game Reviews I like his bad english... its like he's asking if it happened in the future yet.... and you said yes....
+Jackson Jack That's exactly what I got from this. Ludo's a wizard and I can't wait to see your Reguard video, you magnificent beast.
Finally, another Elder Scrolls review. It's not the Morrowind review though, just the Battlespire review to tie us over. I wonder if LGR will make us wait for Morrowind... like Bethesda did!! lol
love your reviews LGR, watch them all the time. Can't wait for the morrowind review, hope its like 30 mins long and as snarky as Arena and Daggerfell. =D
Always enjoy your videos, should say it more, thanks for the great content as always, very much enjoyed and appreciated, you even manage to make the history of calculators interesting. ;D
I appreciate it :) And thank you for watching!
I honestly love how the game looks. That Gothic horror setting looks cool and is not something you would expect in the elders scrolls. I am a fan of this type of style, which is why i like the dawnguard dlc a lot, even though Skyrim is a disappointment.
The game oozes that style and atmosphere, and that part of it is truly awesome. I do wish the entire rest of the game matched up to that, haha.
Other than the fetch quests. Hell, the whole game is a fetch quest. Need something? Fetch it here in this dungeon. Need this? Go get it in Labrynthian. I need the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller: Go get it for me. I mean, what are the NPCs good for in Skyrim, other than making you go and get stuff? I got bored and started over. Especially with Dawnguard. My god. "Hey, I need you fetch this recipe." *goes and gets it.* "Oh, thank you. But, to make this work, I need 4 pieces of Dwemer metal and some nirn root." *goes and gets the stuff, almost getting killed in the process.* "Thanks. Here is 50 gold. Now, I need you get a scrap of paper in this dungeon and bring it back, and I will give you an awesome weapon." *gets killed twice retrieving a scrap of paper* "Thanks. Now, to make you the weapon, I need you to get 5 pieces of Dwemer metal, some moonstone and ebony." FUCK YOU. GO GET IT YOURSELF. It pissed me off. Oblivion FTW!!
@@russwaddel08 Grow up.
@@ajani-lamar-_-3712 oh, what a comeback. I don't know if I'll ever get over that. Oh, wait. I don't care. Go clean your room, and play some Oblivion, loser.

Shut up Martin Van Buren.
you are one mazoscist
I got the quick version of the Morrowind review: "It's the best Elder Scrolls and easily one of the best games ever made."
RaithSienar Out with you morrowind fanboys. The game is good but you're being blinded by nostalgia: the game hasnt aged well and most of its mechanics feel and play outdated. Its *not* the best rpg nor the best elder scrolls
Ok now that I'm home and not typing on a fucking tablet here we go with a real response.
What pray tell feels dated?
The excellent RPG mechanics that actually make your skills, and stats matter? The fact that in combat, your stamina is actually fucking important, and not managing it properly means you're gonna have a bad time?
Are the many excellent and logically thought out skill choices that let you play your character how you want to play them dated to you? When I say logically thought out, I mean that skills are divided where they make sense, see in later games Bethesda decided to combine skills that make no sense to combine like short blade and long blade into just generic blade, because apparently in Bethesda's mind daggers and claymores are the same thing, and apparently a fucking battle axe and a club are the same thing too because they just rolled axes into blunt weapons. We went from 9 skills in each category (Combat/Stealth/Magic) to 7 in each category from Morrowind to Oblivion, and then from 7 to 6 in Skyrim. Pretty soon we will have just 3 skills in the entire game.
Fight Good, Sneak Good, and Spell Good.
Not to mention dropping medium armor because they are too fucking lazy to model more armors, and removing hand-to-hand and unarmored all together because NO ONE has ever wanted to play a martial artist before. Playing a character how you want to play them and having the skills to match that play style is dated nonsense, we are in the modern era and choices are bad and dated.
Is the fact that when first joining a faction you are treated as a new recruit and given jobs befitting the station of some jackass that just walked in off the street instead of the great and mighty chosen one that will save them from their doom dated?
Are the missions from some factions that can lead to your expulsion from other factions (which admittedly can be easy to overcome since most factions will let you just buy your way back in) due to conflict of interests dated?
Is the storyline that plays with the idea of the the chosen one (fun fact, you are not necessarily the real Nerevarine, you really could just be some guy that happens to fulfill all the prophecies through coincidence and dumb luck) dated to you?
Or is the only thing you can think of that is legitimately dated the graphics?
I'm betting it's the graphics.
I think out of the two of us YOU are the only one here that hasn't played Morrowind recently, if at all, cause I fucking play it yearly so no nostalgia goggles here on my part.
RaithSienar combat is terrible and unresponsive and it dosnt feel like your doing anything. And stop being a fanboy, oblivion and skyrim were made far better
*****
No.
It's dice and stat based combat, it does the job adequately. No it's not setting the world on fire but it is far from horrible as long as you understand the mechanics behind it.
Not hitting anything? Invest points in agility and keep your stamina up, invest in a bound weapon for your preferred skill until your skill is up more. It's not fucking hard there are potions and scrolls for all that shit.
It's fine if you don't fucking like it, but if it's so detrimental to your enjoyment of the game become a mage. Unlike in Skyrim (ESPECIALLY Skyrim) and Oblivion, magic is actually fun and useful in Morrowind without mods, with mods it becomes something else entirely.
RaithSienar See what you just wrote? In order to use a weapon type I like I need to grind for either xp or gold to atleast try to hit an enemy once in a while. If that system was good it would still be used in modern rpg wich, flash news, it isnt. I know you guys love to be hipsters and say the old things were better but in the end you have a old game with old ideas wich worked when it came out, but now dont.
I hope you do the strange mobile games.
If I can track them down and get some way to play/capture them, I'd love to!
+Lazy Game Reviews that would be awesome! :)

+Louis Macleod 2:49 :)
What's the reference?
Caleb Jaaniste I know this comment is old but w/e I'll answer it lol. The reference is the song "I can't go for that"
Perfect timing with the "You're fired."
That crotch bugle is a good idea if implemented correctly. This needs to be in Bethesda games or any first-person RPGs now. Still put a regular jump button but for precision jumps or if you're unsure, use the crotch bugle. And with high-end computers we can finally render a proper bugle with more polygons.
Wow, some of those levels are pretty cool looking. Definitely seems to have more aesthetic variety than Daggerfall, despite being so much smaller.
That annoying death=exit of the game "feature" is kind of cool to be applied in other games because the player tends to play more carefully, i guess... if something like this is in Skyrim everybody thinks twice before attack harder enemies (but the easy saves always makes everything too easy).
Are you going to do the entire Elder Scrolls series?
I hope to eventually!
+Lazy Game Reviews Careful what you promise, because I've heard the mobile Elder Scrolls games are pretty bad.
+Lazy Game Reviews Cool. would love to hear your views on Red Guard. I love that game and one could call it a preview of what was to come in Morrowind. Redguard was released in 1998 and Morrowind was released in 2002.

+Lazy Game Reviews Great, can't wait for the Morrowind review!
Lazy your channel is awesome! Brings back some nostalgic feelings of my youth! Also makes me super hyped for a new Elder Scrolls.....which will probably happen 6 years from now at this rate.....
Yeah... this was a real letdown after the superb Daggerfall! At least Bethesda got its act together again!
+Jimboola And then lost it again in 2011.
??????
Jimboola Y'know. Skyrim. COD with swords. Still love the game but damn... Why the hell did they make an action FPS game for one of the best (IMO) RPG franchises? Oh yeah. To appeal to people who lack the brain cells to understand basic RPG mechanics. Not that everyone who likes it is in that number (I said I like it myself).
+VeloxV22 I'd say skyrim is a much better game than oblivion overall
MaMastoast That's your opinion which I in no way wish to bash or speak againts. I however think Morrowind was the last real RPG in the TES series. Oblivion is pretty much where the downfall started. It tried to mix RPG and action (which turned out to be "meh" for me) and then Skyrim completely forgets it's roots and goes nuts.
THE CROTCH BUGLE IS NO GUARANTEE...
Haven't started watching (will do after typing) but so excited to see more Elder Scrolls on LGR. The Arena video was the one that led me to this channel, and I stayed :)
this and Redguard kinda bombed
1: Falls into a pool of lava.
2: "The good news is you're still alive."
3: Shows a skeleton sitting against a wall.
These three things contradict each other.
Talking to monsters is such a rare mechanic used in games. I'd love to see more games trying that as i offers so many possibilities interesting.
The only other game I can think of which did that is the Shin Megami Tensei series. And Undertale I suppose.
Your reviews are very joyful to watch! Thanks a lot for every one of them! (And, of course, please go on :))) )

'Pretty stellar... or lunar.'
Cracked up, I hate losing the battle to bad jokes.
i forgot how they didn't even bother to give the skeleton the bone break animation of the previous and just gave it blood. I remember back when Doom became moddable and the first thing I did was change the blood splat to bullet puff for when you attack the flaming skulls and such.
I'd love to see a source port of of Battlespire with lots of bug fixes and good modding opportunities.
I absolutely loved BS! The graphics and voice acting made the game so much more immersive.
Being able to interact with almost every type if Daedra that exist in the ES universe was a great way to explore the lore. Dremora will always be my favorite because of this.

@7:02 😂The entire discussion on jumping is amazing😂😂.
You've got some great content man. Keep it up!
I kind of enjoyed the game once I figured out that the starting build was critically important. Never got to finish it, though. Scratched the bejeeezus out of the disc about halfway through the 5th level and never got around to buying another. Thanks for the pointer to GOG. I'll put it on my list.
HALL and OATES reference in an elder scrolls review.... subscribed.
There's no wonder why allot of people forgot about this title. It's one of those oddities that has slipped through time and is kinda forgotten about.
The best thing about it is that sexy cover art! Some of the music is great too! The art is pretty nice as well. Wish they would try to do a sequel to this and do it much better.
This review was very good, thank you for that! Do you know about the german Gothic game series? Gothic 2 is still one of my most beloved RPGs. From what I gathered Gothic games should be right up your alley. And the story about Gothic 3's production is really noteworthy (publisher/developer crisis, fans who patched the game to a playable state, etc).
+Prelmable Yep awesome games once you get used to the controls.

i feel like the scamps on battlespire never changed going into morrowind
The graphics on this one are really great. Thanks for sharing, LGR!
That's the thing, eh? Any game pre-2000s that included a physics engine was almost always unreliable and buggy. You collide with objects, you fall through the floor, you clip through walls, you get stuck behind tables... it's a mess.
This game seems so frustrating but the talking aspect is cool though. Another great review here, I had to watch this again after Redguard and apparently I never commented.
i really love this type of art style😊
lol One of your funnier reviews, there was some real comedy gold in there. Hell, even some Hall and Oates, nicely done xD
hilarious commentary man
So this needs to be addressed. Remember how the game resets to DOS after each time you die? Well on the Chimera of Desolation (yes that's really the name of a level) the game creates a useless programming artifact inside your save file every time it resets to DOS. Collect enough artifacts and your save file will be corrupted and all your progress is lost. No one knows exactly how many artifacts are required before your save file is corrupted, some estimate around 30. Ideally if you never have to die or reset the game you could get through this level without problem but that's not going to happen. Getting stuck in level geometry is the current fad in the Desolation. So the only advice is to save right before you proceed to the Desolation and then don't die or get stuck in the level geometry, and if you do die get ready to do the whole level again.
I made it three and a half minutes in and cracked up at the censoring on the character design screen. Bravo.
Thanks for this video, I just bought the game on GOG for a buck ninety-nine. This info will enhance my playing experience!!
I remember MPLayer. I used to play Quake on it a LOT when I was in middle school.
Finally some good review. I never got this damn game to work back in the days due its weird ass graphics requirements...
I really appreciate the Hall n Oats joke at 2:50
