    i think the original fallout games would do really well on mobile and tablet devices,turn based rpgs are great for those platforms and a whole new generation of gamers would get a chance to play them, bethesda should really consider porting them over.

      It's a fantastic idea, and the controls would be stupid-easy for all the old-school RTS games as well.
      The only problem, though, is that the majority of hardcore gamers have scorned mobile games. For a truly hardcore game to gain a fraction of the players of any other would be as likely as Sega releasing another game console.

    Fallout 1 was a bit more consistent in tone than Fallout 2, so I don't find it surprising when I hear someone say that they think that it is better than the later parts. Personally, I think Fallout 2 is the best in the series, but I've met several people who disagree with me on this one.

    • @aedanclarke
      @aedanclarke 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      +AFnord Myself included. Fallout 2 was beyond just being too funny for its own good, its villain was a fucking kid's cartoon type of villain. You get the first game, which has a number of references, yeah, but its otherwise a dark, quiet game with really well-realized characters, and one of the best villains in gaming (and, in my opinion, in entertainment in general)... then you get F2, which makes a joke or reference in damned near every conversation, introduces out-of-place enemies (Wanamingos, for one), a weak satire of '90s American politics for villain, and it's all just weak stuff. They made a few improvements to F1, but they ARE small.
      Fallout 1 wasn't just infinitely more consistent in tone, it was pretty much a better game in most every way, with the exception being the few small improvements F2 made. People talk about how Fallout 3 was fucking retarded, but honestly, I don't think Fallout 2 was much better.

    • @AFnord
      @AFnord 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Aedan Clarke Fallout 2 was bigger, and that's the main reason for why I prefer it. It quite simply offered more of the good stuff, but yeah, many of the references went out of hand. Fallout 3 suffers from other issues, like how it fails to include essential parts in its world building (water is a big thing in the story... but no-one (apart from a few beggars placed right outside of towns) seem to have an issue with it. Food is still scavenged from 200 year old shopping malls because no-one has tried to grow their own food or something (how exactly does that work?)). Fallout 2s biggest failings was that it was being too silly, Fallout 3s were that it was being serious, yet it was serious only because it told you why it was serious, not because it was able to show you why it was serious (while I think the big robot thingy at the end was stupid, it's really a minor issue compared to the glaring flaws in its worldbuilding that the game has).

    • @LiquidDIO
      @LiquidDIO 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +Aedan Clarke Because Fallout 2 was way less linear, I think. Fallout 1 pretty much had you dashing for the water chip before you could really enjoy the sandbox as much as you could in 2, and it seemed like 2 had more options to explore. It was bigger, it was meatier and yes, it was probably more silly, which may be why a lot of people who played it when they were younger might look at it as standing out a bit more. Fallout 1 was definitely darker, with realistic depictions of what societies may look like after such a massive catastrophe and I love it almost as much as I love 2.
      It's a pity we never really got the original Fallout 3 as intended (Van Buren,) as what was documented certainly seemed like more of a return to the tone of 1 than 2. It did set New Vegas up rather nicely and introduced us to the Legion, which sort of never fully got fleshed out as much as they wanted to, due to time constraints in NV.

    • @BifronsCandle
      @BifronsCandle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      +Aedan Clarke " its villain was a fucking kid's cartoon type of villain." I dunno. I always found Frank Horrigan intimidating, even as an adult. The first glimpse of him you get is a mutant five times your size murdering a family in the middle of nowhere, as a grim foreshadowing of the Enclave and what they represent. When you finally meet him, his talking head comes out of nowhere and you're dragged into combat with this overzealous, convicted monster. Then there's his death animation...

    • @Vohaul86
      @Vohaul86 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +AFnord Fallout 1 all the way. Fallout 2 had bigger areas, but for me the use of those weren't utilized properly: Klamath was one big rat city, San Fran was almost all about two rival gangs, etc. Well, New Reno was great, but still...
      Also, of the Fallout 1's time limit: I understand that some people hate it, but using caravans and a little forethought what places visit in one go help a lot to save time spent wandering the wastes. (I actually drew a logistics map on paper on my first playthrough to optimize the movement in World Map, so I could finish quests as quickly as possible.) I can't describe how stupid it felt in Fallout 2 that at first the tribe's starved for months if not years, and the same again being guinea pigs to Enclave."Oh, I'd like to help with G.E.C.K, but I just have to bang Angela. Maybe next month, OK?"

      You can punch, shoot, or stab them in the eyes or groin, if you want. And when you strike them, you actually hear childish whelps of pain. Clint, I have to agree. I've always felt like Mark Morgan's soundtracks to both 1 and 2 were some of the most atmospheric game music ever created. I still listen to both OSTs to this day. It may be the wave of nostalgia I had when I first played them back when I was a teenager, but I feel like they hold up to anything considered modern AAA.

      I sometimes put the Higwayman on youtube on repeat.
      Dreaming myself away to cruising through the wasteland.
      Vic in the passenger seat, Dogmeat in the backseat with his head out the window, tongue lolling in the wind. The dry desert air feeling almost cool as it rushes in though windows and rust holes, the dry-rotted upholstry creaking as we roll over a bump in the sand. The one working song on the sound system playing over and over again.
      In the distance is something that could be a caravan heading to New Reno, or maybe it's a band of raiders. Maybe it's just a mirage.
      Frank Morgan is amazing. His background music is so good and atmospheric. It brings every scene and town to life. There might just be a few dozen NPCs in a town, but the music makes it feel alive. I could gush forever about how much it brings the entire game to life.

    I can't explain what it is, but there's a certain charm to the original two Fallout games that the new ones don't have. And that's not any kind of nostalgia, because I played the Bethesda ones first. Fallout 3 and 4 feel so gray, drab, and ugly to me, and even though the first two games are still post apocalyptic wasteland survival games, there's something in the aesthetics I just find a lot more inviting. They're more doomy and ambient; they sort of have a Quake vibe going on. Or Thief: The Dark Project. I guess I'm just a sucker for anything with that 90s industrial kind of feel. The new games still have Vaultboy, they pay great respect to the lore, and copy the specific designs of everything to a T, but there's something in the overall atmosphere that's just missing to me. Does anyone else feel like that?

    Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 are two of the games that have aged the most gracefully of nearly ALL the 90's games. They are true pleasures to play today as they were back then. The turn based combat was so simple, yet elegant and well made. The violence just passing into gore, but not making it a gore-porn game. The character interation EXACTLY how it should be - No visible speech check, but options that appear if your speech is high enough. You never truly know if a character can be reasoned with or convinced through words before you actually TRY having a diplomatic run of the game. In fact, Fallout 1 is the kind of game that can be finished practically without ever firing a single weapon.. though you don't REALLY get to explore the full game then. You can't speak with beasts, for example.. so you'd have to avoid them. But it's so funny that the endgame boss CAN be beaten by just speaking with him, though it takes a hell of a lot of attention to detail to be able to do that unless you have the cookbook just beside you. Fallout 2 is somewhat less so, but what can you do when opposed by zealots?
    All in all - Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 are masterpieces. Easily some of the best games made in modern times. I suggest them to anyone, no matter if they are not truly into violent games. They are just so good.

      Come on bro there are pleeeeenty of 90s games that aged gracefully. That was a pretty insane decade for gaming

    • @Catonzo
      @Catonzo 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Gameprojordan There are for sure, but graphically and mechanically the games holds up to this day as its own "style".
      I still play Might and Magic series for example. Theme Hospital. Death Rally. Heroes (all of which have a style that is artistic and hand crafted which foregoes the need for graphics). Baldurs Gate. StarCraft/WarCraft. There are WAY more, but these were the ones I played the most and still find in me to play today.
      I still hold a button on Fallout 1 & 2 as being the most well aged and possible to pick up for anyone that never actually played them back then. Whether that be because they weren't born yet or were too young.

    I remember playing FO2 for the first time somewhere in 2001.
    "Oh man, look at that guy on the cover, in futuristic armors and big gun, that game must be fun!"
    And then you start in the Temple of Trial, with spear and almost no clothes, punching big ants and scorpions.
    Then I played FO1 somewhere in 2007. Way more consistent atmosphere, not that long for a RPG, great NPCs... somewhat I missed Master and finished the game.
    I played a lot of old games (pre- 2000) in 2005 and later and had no problems.
    Seems like being adult turn people into geezers that can't learn new stuff no matter what.

      +MrFutago87 GURPS was actually a pretty awesome role-playing system. I used to play in a futuristic GURPS campaign back then in the 90s, but you could use it for anything from medieval, to post-apocalyptic and cyberpunk campaign settings no problem. I think the timer at the beginning of the game make it more engaging in 'roleplaying' aspect like when I talked to the water merchant who offer to send emergency water supply (thus extend the timer) I had to consider between saving my own money for more stim (It's dangerous world) or caring more about my fellow citizen in the vault.

    PSA: Always install the fan patches when playing Fallout 1/2, they fix so many issues with quests as well as bringing things like kids back into the international versions of the game (they were made invisible instead of being removed so they can still steal your stuff and be quest important in Fallout 2).
    Hope you review Fallout 2 as well, that game was rather educational for a 12 year old back in '98. Still got the strategy guide my parents had to import which includes a fair amount of stuff that got changed at the last minute.

    LGR one thing I've always loved about Fallout is the fact it's a world where the 1950s Americana aesthetic and SCIENCE, like atomic power everywhere, was what the pre-Great War world was like. It's not just post-apocalyptic, it's post-apocalyptic in a world where computers were the size of a room and cars still had fins and such.
    That retro-future aesthetic that is omnipresent in machines and computers in Old World ruins just is so cool.

    The death animations were always so punchy, this video definitely highlights that. Unlike a lot of modern games (and even Fallout 3 to some extent) shooting someone with ridiculously high-caliber bullets, even the basic pistol seemed powerful. This IS a world where 10mm was standard issue, and it's definitely fitting with the violent atmosphere.

    Fallout 1 is by far my favorite game in the series. The original team (Tim Cain, Jason Anderson and Leonard Boyarsky) absolutely nailed the atmosphere and created an immensely coherent game that is still (re)playable to this day. Arguably, F2 had some cool areas (like New Reno) and features alot of improvements (better companions), but at some point I thought the in-game jokes (Knights of the Round Table) just went overboard, and the world felt less consistent as a result.
    Anyway, thanks for checking out this classic. Just trying to ignore the last comment that you'd be hard pressed to find people who prefer F1 over later games in the series..such as F3???
    Oh and by the way: the reason why Steve Jackson no longer wanted GURPS affiliated with the game was the level of violence.

    this game managed to hit the nail on the head with pop culture references. they didn't know it yet but so many pop culture references from their game would see a rise in popularity long after the game's time. back when this was made, the only doctor who was the original seasons, and while they were super popular, they weren't NEARLY as popular as the new doctor who's (not saying one or the other is better, just observing :P). in addition to that, they got the whole "mad max" thing going on, and what series just got a new movie??? :P. man they so struck out with this game. fantastic job :D. and great review lgr

    Ah yes, this brings me back. You my friend always give me a trip down memory lane. This game was pure crack for me. After playing wasteland for an amount of time i will not mention, this was the new high for me. Good God if only i could have gotten paid to play this game. Fallout 2 was of coarse memorable with the car and TRUNK !! But this game will always have a place in my heart as an all time GREAT. I was unaware of the full collection offered, thank you sir. Always love your videos. I could go on and on but i wont.

    I just completed my first play through a couple weeks ago, and man you hit the nails on the head. Granted I played _Fallout Fixt_ for the bug fixes, but there were still minor issues. I was half way through the game before I realized some of the tiny artifacts on the ground were obtainable items, and the camera angles in some areas really hindered your sight. Your helper AI isn't the brightest either. Constantly standing right in front of me or my line of fire, and I learned saving a lot is key to this game. Other than that it was amazing, and I had lot's of fun!
    Also, fuck that Mother Deathclaw!

    Fallout 1 is truly amazing in term of storytelling, lore and gameplay. I love the turn-based combat system even though many people think it doesn't age well to compare the later installment, but I find it is a unique and brilliant design. Not to forget to mention the moral choices are ingenious in fallout 1

    Then in Fallout 2 you visit another place and find they received a shipment for like a thousand water-chips there.

      Seriously. It set the stage for a pent-ilogy. Fallout 1 is huge for creating the whole retrofuturistic atmosphere to start with, along with the flavour and mechanics that came with it.

    Please try Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It's a fantasy RPG with some of Fallout's game mechanics (point of view, turned-based solo combat, no classes) with a dark 19th century, steampunk theme.

    Loved the first Fallout and converted a few friends to the fold. But the second one was my all time favourite, putting in so many hours playing it.
    Also played the less well received Fallout BoS on PS2 wasn't to bad.
