  • Jerry is finally coming into the home stretch with this 12 string.
    His attention to detail takes him back to sanding, scraping and more sanding.
    In the end it will have earned the name ROSA!

    Jerry, for the depth of your bridge inlay use a string action gauge. It's rectangular shape will span the hole on your proxon, and us calibrated in imperial and decimals. You can set the depth in just a couple minutes easily without a lot of head scratching.

    Twelve string guitars always amaze me from the engineering standpoint. Twelve strings at pitch means a pull of about two hundred pounds. The neck has a hell of a job just keeping straight. Looks like a wonderful job on this one here. I hope that it sounds as good as it looks!

  • @hijmestoffels5171
    @hijmestoffels5171 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The distance from the 12th fret to the saddle needs to be longer than the distance to the nut to compensate for the rise in pitch, caused by stretching the string. When you push the string against the fret you add a bit extra tension on the string, which rises the pitch. Making the string a bit longer by shifting the saddle lowers the pitch and you are in tune. This effect is stronger with thicker strings, therefore you need to compensate more on the low strings. This also means that you should do the intonation when the action is correct. The higher the action, the more you need to shift the saddle backwards.

    One more thing......after the first time seeing your “Custom Made” intonation tool, rig, bridge finder, what ever you call it, I found it to indispensable to find the correct location of the intonation of the bridge! It is accurate and cheap to make. I would encourage anyone who does work on guitars to make one, especially those who build or restores guitars! I have 2. Mine will work for acoustic and electric guitars and basses. The on I use for a bass is not quite as wide. This is for permanently mounted brigades, you don’t need one for floating bridges like mandolins or arch top guitars. Make sure to install leather or cork or some soft material on any part of the rig that would come in contact with the guitar, to protect the guitar finish. I only wish I would have had this tool when I first started working on guitars so many years ago. My first fail could have been avoided. Live and learn and oh boy can you learn from Jerry!!! Another fantastic tip from Jerry! Love from NW Colorado. Thanxz

    For intonation, the distance between the nut and 12th fret should not be exactly the same as the 12th fret to the saddle. Fretting the string increases the string tension ever so slightly, raising the pitch, so for perfect intonation the distance from the 12th to the saddle should be a tiny bit longer than from the nut to the twelfth, with the amount of difference depending on the action height. By the way, great tone from this guitar, it's going to be sweet.

    Hey Jerry, I am really loving the progress and the look of this 12 string. I agree with you on your comment that you like to leave the neck unfinished and just use oil. I have a Yamaha acoustic, with a neck that is high gloss and I am so tempted to remove it because I prefer a bare neck. It helps you move down the neck faster. I know that you use Adirondack spruce for your guitar, but is there any difference between the sound quality of a guitar that uses Adirondack vs Engelmann

    Hello Jerry. I enjoy watching you (even when you're grumbling) and wish I could be your next door neighbor.
    I have a question, but first keep in mind my knowledge of luthiery is next to zero) will the owner of this masterpiece tuned it down to D, G, C, etc and will this make a difference in its intonation? Do other guitar makers keep this in mind when creating a twelve string? Also, as a rule, do you recommend that owners of twelve strings tune them down a whole step even if the guitar has a truss rod?

  • @ApexWoodworks
    @ApexWoodworks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jerry, are you planning on tuning this beautiful instrument to E, rather than D, which is what most 12 string guitars are set to? And if that's the case, then shouldn't you have set the intonation at D?

How about setting the bit to touch the surface, then placing two .050 shims on the jig and lowering the bit again?
