  • Remember the old Weather Wire? Not many do. Sure, the NOAA Weather Wire Service today has been modernized, using satellites and the like... but the original Weather Wire - or at least a good part of it for many years, consisted of a network of Teletypes, connected to one another through telephone lines.
These Teletypes were stationed at Weather Forecast Offices, offering a primary line of communication to other WFOs and other important places, like TV & radio stations, Civil Defense offices, AP & UPI bureaus, 911 centers, other Weather Service forecast centers, etc. They would transmit weather forecasts, climate data, observations and as needed, weather bulletins - watches, warnings, etc., along the wire.
As Teletypes and the Weather Wire lived throughout much of the 20th Century, the old Weather Wire transitioned to other technologies as Teletype wire services (and the Teletype itself) died in the 1980s. Even so, it still took the National Weather Service several decades to transition away from old Teletype formatting, due to many entities still using old Teletype technology. A lot has changed over the years.
Yet, still sits the Teletype - those that are left, that is... a monolith of yesteryear. While these Teletypes can be fun to clank away with, their original purpose of disseminating information has long since past... and the Weather Wire on these old Teletypes, non-existent... well, mostly until now.
Shown in this video is a Teletype Model 19 emulating the old Weather Wire Service and disseminating critical information in near real time! The way it does it is through a small, user-friendly Python script written for Raspberry Pi, called ittyWx - Internet Weather for Teletype!
ittyWx can be found here - free to use (GPL-3.0):
    github.com/tenko23/ittyWx
What ittyWx does is it web scrapes the NWS API server for a given location - entered by the user - and will print of Watches/Warnings/Advisories/statements issued by the National Weather Service within a minute or two if issuance (in conjunction with the use of a Volpe v2 USB board). A 5v power relay can be combined for automatically turning on and off the Teletype (as needed), as alerts come down from the NWS - to be printed onto the Teletype. It's a pretty cool, little script(s) that brings back to life these old Teletypes - repurposing them for what they were originally intended/used for. A modern solution for cool, ol' stuff!
If you have a Teleype and are able to run Python, go check it out!... itty - Internet Weather for Teletype :) ~
    Cheers ^^ !!!
*Disclaimer: The watch and warning seen printed in this video were issued shortly before the video was shot. Hard to know when and where an alert will pop up, for filming purposes ;p .....

This brings back memories of my first years working on the railway. This was the form of communication used, until desktop computers arrived in 1984 with email lol.

@Viper6 Yeah, it's amazing how they made things work back in the day - and really amazing to see the moving parts, too :) . It's really a shame the modern form is so much less "sexy" ;o .....

This is why I search on TH-cam for random thoughts, sometimes others have the same idea only earlier. Now all I need is a teletype!

I used to fix these. After the demise of Teletype the printers were made by a company called Extel. Customers included commodity traders and ATC towers.

"a monolith of yesteryear"... absolutely! I thoroughly enjoyed this clip. Love that sound. Doesn't compare to this, but I still got my old typewriter. Thanks for sharing. God bless and Be safe!

@Zedhead Motovlogs Yeah, totally ^^ ! It's what I was kind of hoping from day one - restore it back to its original purpose :) . It's been a long road, but for sure one that's really rewarding - when you can see the end result and can say, "I did that ^^ !!!" ^_^

I got a question, so with a EASyPLUS is the character generator already built in or do you have to have a separate system for that

@TWC Kodster They either come with a CG card or they don't :) . If yours doesn't have one, I'm not sure how easy it would be to find one anymore, unfortunately ;o . . . . .

Great video. I'm setting up a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W with ittyWx and using it with an OkiData dot matrix printer that has a roll paper feed. Is there a way I can contact you. I'm trying to direct the output to my USB printer. Take care, Vendel/ K2DSI.
