  • Today, on what would have been his 95th birthday, we honor Chuck Berry and celebrate his legacy with the release of a very special limited run of the Chuck Berry 1970s ES-355, hand-crafted by expert luthiers and craftspeople at the Gibson Custom Shop and the Murphy Lab.
In this video, we pay homage to the roots of and enduring musical legacy of Charles Edward Anderson Berry and his lasting impact on guitar players everywhere. The city of St. Louis and Chuck Berry’s music are inextricably linked. From humble beginnings in “The Ville” neighborhood he grew up in to pioneering rock and roll songs that took him around the world, and then back again to the storied Duck Room at Blueberry Hill where Chuck Berry continued to play monthly shows well into his 80s. Chuck Berry’s songs resonated deeply with America’s youth. His songs paint a picture. They tell a story. He was an artist who went far beyond genres, eras, and race. But as extraordinary as Chuck’s songwriting and performance craft were, at the end of the day, it was that guitar phrasing that set his music apart: the boogie-woogie roll, those double stops, and those multi-string bends coursing through his pickups that willed rock and roll into existence. Every rock guitar player of any stature has borrowed much from Chuck Berry. And along for that ride was his Gibson ES-355.
This is more than vintage. This is lineage. This is America’s musical heritage.

I saw him play in the Felt Forum in NYC about a week after they filmed his 60th birthday concert. And yes for those of you who never got to see him, he was not as good as you would expect. He was oh so much better than you could imagine. Let's face it, if you were alive since 1955 you had him imprinted in your brain, so when he started playing you had already heard it all before. But when he was right there and you were hearing it in person that imprint in your brain lit up and it was like nothing that ever happened before. There was a joke on SNL after they sent the Voyager out of the solar system. It had a record with the sounds of Earth on it, including one of Chuck's tunes. Chevy Chase said that we had received a message from outer space and it said one thing- send more Chuck Berry.

Seeing him as a kid on TV in the 1970s with that exact guitar is the reason I'm here playing today. That was the catalyst. First it was air guitar on ping pong and tennis racquets, then a stringless old POS MIJ Tele of my brother's and finally learning some cowboy chords on my Dad's 1954 ES125. A whole lot of years and guitars later, I'm still cranking it out on a Gibson. Thanks Chuck, Thanks Gibson.

"Prized possession"? In Hail, Hail, Rock and Roll, Chuck said he checked his guitar as luggage and got a new one every year saying (with a wink) "Tools!" as he could write it off as a business deduction.
