    Figured I’d post the recent update here: Sanderson posted an update on Reddit a few days ago. He said to not expect any more news this year about a Mistborn adaptation. He also said that it isn’t just because of the writer’s strike. He mentioned basically that Hollywood seems to be getting cold feet with so many big budget flops this year (Flash, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, etc).

    I’m of the opinion that the studios want to pull a Wheel of Time or Rings of Power or Witcher and change the story so much as to make it almost unrecognizable from the source material. If this is the case, I’m very happy Sanderson us sticking too his guns and saying no.

      Rings of Power was such a perversion of Tolkien that even those starving for new Tolkien adaptations could not even watch it. Yes, better not to do it than to bastardize it.

    It’s the strike. It may be other things as well but at this moment I’m guessing it’s 98% likely it’s the strike. Most show runners are members of the writer’s union. Since they have now been joined by SAG-AFTRA there will be more pressure on studios to value creators by actually paying them accordingly. I don’t know this but I suspect Sanderson will not make a deal until he can talk to the core of the team with whom he would be working. Show runners aren’t available right now. Also, Sanderson is a values-driven man and he may not wish to close a deal with studios and producers until the strike is resolved. All of this is conjecture but I do know that if a show runner/writer was to sign a contract, that would be considered crossing the picket lines. And, just one more guess but also a further potential complication, if Sanderson wants a writing credit, he’ll have to join the union…and be on strike…and forbidden from signing contracts for writing for a show/movie. So, really, it basically has to be the strike doesn’t it?
    Just a side note but now that SAG-AFTRA has joined I think that shuts down the recording of audiobooks too. I’m not positive but I think so.

    Sanderson, take all the time you need to get it right! The Cosmere, Mistborn, Stormlight, these are all too incredible to have a rushed adaptations just so studio execs and wall street can make a quick buck. As Sanderson and Wells said in their own podcast, you really only get one shot at an adaptation, and if you're really lucky you'll get a second shot maybe 30 years later.
    Take it easy. Take it slow. Do it right. We're in no rush. Better have a great adaptation on par with the LOTR or HP, than some rushed mediocre one

    About one year ago was the height of the streaming content wars. Every studio was desperately putting together as much content as possible. Since then the internet turned on marvel, rings of power, wheel of time, and many other productions. Even worse, separately, Netflix, Disney, and other company stocks absolutely TANKED, causing those companies to slash spending. Now we have the strike built on top of those things.

    Honestly speaking I don't want the mistborn film adaptation as they won't be able to do justice to the storyline and neither do i want mistborn to be adapted as a live-action series because Scadriel, the action scenes, the magic, etc are way too complex for a live-action adaptation. And you might say that they did perfectly fine with GOT, but the thing is, ASOIAF was never a magic system heavy series, it was a character complexed series which is easy to execute on the screen. An animation adaptation of mistborn will be the best news we can hear because just imagine a big studio like MAPPA(everyone knows this name) were to adapt mistborn into 24 episode each season and for 3 seasons. It will be amazing to say the least. And an instant success. And fight sequences will be like no-one has ever seen before(Battle at the end of book 2 will be phenomenal to watch) and with mind-blowing BGMs and music(for which mappa is already pretty well-known). Just imagine the animation level and dedication of AOT season 4 going into all the three seasons of mistborn, it will be a delight to say the least.

    Sanderson said recently that the D&D movie not doing well really gave producers cold feet.

  • @oscarchavezavellan2738
    @oscarchavezavellan2738 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well it's an amalgamation of several issues really:
    1. Sanderson doesn't have much experience with hollywood and how it works, he doesn't really know the possible issues and obstacles that can stop or delay a production from moving forward. Most of his experience with hollywood has been as *a mere consultant* for the wheel of time, he wasn't even a writer.
    2. It's also fair to assume that at some point things were not moving as fast as he expected and there's only so much time he can spend into these *side projects*, his biggest priorities as a businessman are the books and everything comes second to that. Add to that he also owns his own company now and he also needs to put focus on that.
    3. He is also looking for some creative control and Hollywood has proven to be really difficult with that, they are ok witth giving you lots of money, but when you ask for some control over the characters you created they suddenly become hesitant. As he has said, he doesn't need the money and big companies don't know what to do when they cannot just buy the complete control of your characters in film and tv with money. Alan Moore is a great example of what I'm talking about, he's grown bitter towards hollywood and the comic industry because of how much they have milked his stories with no respect or understanding towards the material.
    4. The strike, this one is pretty recent, however, the alarms for it have been going off for a couple years now. Take for example vfx artists, I remember them talking and complaining about the horrible exploitation and working conditions they've been getting in the last couple years, and now it's been announced that they are trying to form a new Union. Sanderson is also concerned for the salaries of everybody working under his brand, he's been very vocal about that, so it wouldn't surprise that his work ethic has proven to be a problem for studios and their budgets.

    Authors SHOULD have full control over any adaptation. It's their story! I'm not an author. But if I was, it would make me furious if an adaptation was being made and they changed things in a way that I did not agree with and I had no say in the matter.

  • @Yesica1993
    @Yesica1993 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I try to never get excited about movies/shows/books/adaptations until it's actually DONE and ready for the masses! That one of the reasons I don't want to commit to any book series until the series is complete. I've watched other fandoms get burned and I don't want to be in their shoes. I loved The Way of Kings, when it first came out. But that was long before I learned it was part of such a long series. Let me know when it's all done and I'll be happy to revisit it. Until then, I don't want to risk being left hanging. (And this is not even to bash the authors. Things often happen outside of their control. They have lives, too.)

    The most telling fact is that Brandon expected an announcement in the fall of 2022, and that never came. I think Brandon would have come out and say so if he vetoed the project, so I'll rule that explanation out. The strike started much too late to be the cause too, and again.. no news in "a couple of months" as promised. The simplest and most likely explanation is that the studio that optioned the rights and was starting to develop the project with Brandon as co-show runner had a deal with a streamer (or distributor, in the case it was a movie), a deal Brandon himself was totally convinced was in the can, but as it turned out it fell through and the project is quite possibly in development limbo, and we won't get any news until the option runs out, unless they manage to get another outlet interested. This happened notably to Fonda Lee's adaptation when the streamer that wanted a pilot decided it didn't like the project on paper after all. They're after another outlet, but haven't found one, so the project is for now dead in the water. Brandon's probably keeping silent at the request of the studio (which unless I'm mistaken, he's never named either).

    Based on the fact that Joe writes the script of Best Served Cold, he had this before Brandon Sanderson and yet he is stoped now bc of the strike. So nobody moves for a while. So this is the speed even Brandon Sanderson has to count with. If Joe has the rights to write the script - and that's a fact he could tell - where is the status of Brando Sando he was before this 1 year ago? Bc to tell something like this as fact? He needs a signed contract in details for himself too and already in moving project. So he not just moved but his movie is in already in prep, casting state. If this is the speed, we can count that Brando Sando even could be late for 2 years to reach this if any delay comes up. After all, he is not Neil Gaiman a well know party in the movie industry who earned a place by producers and such by being a good film maker. And he himself told that they ignore writers by default. Also there is the other interesting fact where also we can see what happened when Neil Gaimen wanted the same rights to say anything. He had to change studios again and again. Like for Sandman he waited how long? Like 10 years and chose 3-4 studios? And for Good Omens? He said no almost to anyone until he had everything bc of the last wish of Terry Pratchett? There is that.

    Hate to be negative but if you track the failures of shows like WOT and Rings at Amazon along with failures of Indy and Flash at the theaters it is probably very hard to put the kind of money together that it would take for it to be done right and Sanderson to sign off on. Seems like a lot of productions with fantastical elements are not doing well lately so funding an all new IP will be very difficult. Not to mention the strikes are killing everything right now. Rowling), Master & Commander, Vampire Academy, The Spider Wick Chronicles, Narnia, Earthsea, The Black Dahlia, The Mist, All The Pretty Horses, The Dark Is Rising, Stand By Me, and Eragon. Any book adaptations that many people have considered it as failures. No more! I had enough of this unnecessary criticism. Enough is enough. I don't find it bad if the adaptations go against the source material. I have no problems about this. To me, this isn't a knock against the source material of these works. I consider this, as a sign of changing times. Times are changing, it can't go back to the way it used to be. Actors, directors, and producers alike. I give them credit for making the book to film or tv adaptations in the first place. I don't like when they remake The Golden Compass, as tv show. Not for standing out on its own, but made to be spiteful against the previous adaptations and be much better. I am sorry, I don't find this excusable anymore. I am not having this. The book adaptation trend weren't a thing in the 2000's, they have been around in Hollywood and across the globe. This is what makes me annoyed about doing any form of adaptations. It's called societal expectations. Every person, every form of life, no matter what alignments, or viewpoints they have. Have all rights of what they can do or what they cannot do. You can't judge a property by its own name and cover. Let it be, what it wants to be.

      Stories like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Mega Man, Astro Boy, Percy Jackson, Twilight, Inkhereart, Eragon, Game of Thrones, manga, and video games. The same goes to adaptations of these stories like an example Eragon, Inkhereart, Lemony Snicket's, Percy Jackson, I am Nimber Four, The Golden Compass ect. If they ended with one or two films, I know fans may find it as incomplete. I have something to say. I find them to have a beginning, middle, and ending. To me, I have nothing to argue about it, I find this as an good ending. They can be read or watched without the need of knowledge of these stories. Let it be what it wants to be. Sometimes, when adapting comics, books, video games, manga, and many more. Remakes of The Golden Compass, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Eragon, and more. They can do remakes of these tales. But doing it for jabs or spite, just isn't an excuse anymore. It's supposed from generation to generation. Spiting the previous adaptations and calling it "failures". Just isn't a good excuse. There is no definitive answer to adapt books, comics, manga, and deviations have the right to happen. Producers, directors, and actors, have rights too. It has the right to be a part of the source material's canon. Deal with it.

      To me, fantasy is not just television. Cinema has a place for the genre too. Fantasy books have the right to exist as movies whether people like it or not. It has a right to be made. I care. Books can be done anyway it wants to become. Mistborn has the potential and right to be made as a film. I don't want any "no, buts, why, or how dare they you!" stuff. It has to happen, it needs to happen. I had enough of this nonsense and nitpicking. That was a few years ago! Yet, people are still doing this. This needs to stop! Deal with it. Times are always changing. Earthsea would have better as a film series instead. I am okay if there are deviations and cut out some plot points alike. Too many subplot points can also may story convoluted and confusing too. Keep very little subplots while keeping the main plot intact. That is my idea of doing book adaptations as films and tv shows. Fantasy still has a place for cinema, not just tv. It better have a right to exist in the first place.

    My understanding is that the Hollywood writers strike has had an impact and with recent economic instability in the United States coupled with the recent adaptations not performing as well as hoped (Wheel of Time and Rings of Power) that some of the funding has dried up... my assumption is that these failed because they didn't stick to the source material and it wasn't the labor of love that other successful adaptations have been (Lord of the Rings and Dune)
    My hope is that he get's the funding and that Hollywood realizes that if they stick to Brandon's vision and he finds a screen writer and director who are massive and true fans of his work and that Brandon is involved in the project and has control that it will do really well... like REALLY well

    At this point I don't want an adaptation. If people are interested in the story READ THE FCK BOOKS.
