I saw this in the theater as a kid and agree with actually a good bit of your criticisms but in some things you’re missing the mark in my opinion. The Enterprise introduction scene was epic. Yes, we all knew the Enterprise but this was also the newly redesigned Enterprise. To see it from all the angles as the pod approached was very cool at that time. I’m also not sure that you realize the background between Captain Decker and Kirk. His father was a Captain in the original series who went a bit mad when his ship was nearly destroyed by the world eater. If you see the way this Decker acts it’s almost as if he has a grudge against Kirk because his father died in that incident. Also Kirk was taking the ship for that one mission due to his vast experience with the unknown where the new Decker was more experienced with the new systems so he was kept on as second in command for his knowledge. No, I’m not the biggest fan of the movie but I don’t think it ranks as bad as you put it. As far as to the production values, it was supposed to be the return of the series so was given a lower budget to begin with. Paramount switched that in the middle of production once they saw the success of films like Star Wars so you should give them a bit more grace on that front.
I read it was the second most expensive film ever made at the time, so it makes sense they want to show it off . . . But I literally verbally said out loud: "Okay it's cool I get it," because it was taking so long to move on.
@ like I said you had some good critiques in there but just wanted to point out a few things. Just my opinion, my dude. Of course it was always a running joke of the fans that odd numbers ST movies sorta sucked but even numbered ones were usually pretty great.
