Own both D-45 & D-41 Both great Guitars but the 45 is 2nd to none. The greatest thing I love about Martin is that they are very consistent. Now I have and had Collins and Taylors there's just something special about a Martin.
I've played a bunch of both models, and it has always been a tossup. In this case, the 41 feels more present with a sharper attack and the 45 has more of that round, husky bottom. With these instruments, you really need to play a few side by side (which is dang near impossible)
I have a D-41. I compared nearly 10 maybe around 8 D-41’s to be exact within a span of 2 months. To my ears I kept the nicest D-41 out of all I compared . Then I compared my D-41 to a D-45 and found the difference in price wasn’t worth it just to say I have a D-45 when blindfold maybe 1 in 10 could tell the difference between them . Both great but if you don’t need the extra bling D-41 is the way to go and for the difference get a D-18 or J-45 ... to boot !!! That’s what I did ... 😃
I have a d41. I can’t justify the cost difference for a 45. . I’m more than happy with the tone and fullness of the 41. Actually with the savings, I can get a 00018! Bit I agree with you.
Despite any particular model within a manufacturer's lineup, there will always be differences and between these two specific guitars, the D-45 happens to have a more lively soundboard. I've certainly played a few "premium" acoustic guitars only to find the sound less than satisfying and other so-called lesser models with a much more pleasing sound.
Elderly pricing has the 45 at nearly 100% higher than the 41. I certainly don't hear anything in the sound that would tip one toward the 45. It is an esthetic choice at best - and even then only for those whose esthetic tastes are defined mainly by bling.
I would find it helpful if you could plsy in other keys besides G and some other musical styles too. This would hopefully show the versatility of the instrument(s). Thanks.
I'm not the best at this stuff, but I thought I heard a more rounded note on the 45. It seemed to sound more "mature". It was very pleasing to the ear. The 41 seemed to have more of a "zing" to the notes. No idea why. They're identical. Wood grade shouldn't make that much of a difference.
The D41 was , per my headphones, a little brighter and more articulate. I don’t hear the level of contrast between a D28 and HD28, however. As one reviewer said below, most of it is esthetics , not sound. Both have reasonable resale value used.
Back in the 1990s I used my credit card to buy 2 Martin's a 45 _ 41 some criminal stold them and I end up making payments for 5 years ,will life goes on and on
No, The 45 has forward shifted scalloped braces, the 41 has standard scalloped braces, this gives the 45 more bass response, the 41 a more balanced sound.
@@frederikthaysen6931 Actually no, the truly "old" D45's from the mid 30s up to 38 had what we would consider today forward shifted scalloped bracing. But that is irrelevant, since what I commented on are the modern versions and that is what he is playing in this video.
this video needs better level balancing between the dialog and instrument playing. for example, the dialog at 1:31 must be 18db less than the playing that immediately preceded it. that's not professional. peak/rms meters will be useful for you guys to improve your production quality, as well as listening. as yogi berra might have said, you can hear a lot by listening.
yes I see, at 1:50 you can see that on the D41 the neck extension goes well beyond the 20th fret, almost to the sound hole, whereas on the D45 the neck extension stops just below fret 20, to give room for the abalone around the end. therefore the illusion of the smaller sound hole on the latter.
@@TheAcousticLetter Thanks for your review was good to hear them side to side. I think the 45 has grade 8 wood, the 41 grade 7 according to Martin. However, the wood is selected by eye so I think it depends on the individual guitar and how well all the components resonate together; a nicer piece of wood to look at does not translate directly into a better sounding piece - they may do density tests but not seen that in their factory tour vids. I did see the guy choosing the wood though and he's been there decades.. How much different other than aesthetics is beyond my pay grade lol but I can hear the difference. (I have a 45 but never played a 41). Sounds to me like there is more bottom end and body to the 45, the 41 has more mid-treble projection. Which is best is a matter of personal taste and music playing style as they are both fantastic instruments.

Exactly. I like the 42 body appointments, but on that particular model, they switched to snowflakes on the fretboard. No idea why.

the d 45 sounds more open and loose and has a nice buzzy growl the other one sounds harsh and awful
I watched a video of yours a while ago comparing the D 42 and the D 45. To me the D 42 was superior.
I tried a 45 and 42, bought the 42. It sounded better to me :)

I believe that both of these models get the same grade of woods.
