      Sorry to be so long in replying. I don't know if you are interested in WWII and all the codebreaking that went on then but I used to work at Bletchley Park (home of the British Codebreakers) and I made a video about it. If you want to see it go into the Bletchley Park site on TH-cam and type into the search bar: Bletchley Park Tour (docu in full) and my video should be (hopefully) top of the list!

    Great review. With respect to how the drone understands battery consumption - if you have ruled out time, current, and voltage, another possible explanation is that the software in the drone uses a points system to determine battery depletion. Points are based off actions performed by the user. Some actions result in more points, which would be determined by the vendor during testing. Once the total points tally to a certain amount, then the drone signals that it is low on battery. This could be the reason why there is a mismatch between actual battery remaining and when the drone thinks it is low. Hope this helps. Thanks for the great video.

    First time ever for me commenting on youtube. I'm a 73 year old man and would like to see more videos such as this mans video. Hi William, Many thanks for that! Perhaps if yourself and others on this website manage to lobby, and, persuade Holy Stone to let me do more tests then perhaps we might be able to get more informative reviews done!! It really does all boil down to you guys - without your support Holy Stone is not going to ask me to do any more reviews because, I think, they thought this one was too long and went into too much detail but when you look at all the comments I have received for this video then, perhaps, Holy Stone might have been looking at this from the wrong angle???? Your comments would be very much appreciated!!

    From one stone age man to another, all I can say is your instruction video is, hands down, the best I have ever seen. No need to do another one but I was under a false assumption that the smart phone was for the camera.....sort of a "Birds eye view", if you will. Too many companies today dealing with computers or, in this case, drones operate with the assumption that we already have a base knowledge of the operations. You made it SOOOO simple. Thanks from across the pond.

    • @LindenStead1844MbdTuB
      @LindenStead1844MbdTuB  5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Many thanks Tom for your comments. I have found, throughout my life, that - as you said - there are far too many companies writing instructions that are difficult to follow and sometimes downright impossible! The reason for this is that the people that companies choose to write these things are, invariably, employees who are far too close to the product, know it inside out and make some terrible assumptions about what WE might know! Many years ago I was employed to write instructions for a new product and I have always worked on the same principle - write the instructions for the lowest common denominator, in other words aim them at people who know nothing! Those who know something can skip through the bits they don't want but everybody can always learn something new!! Happy flying!!

      Hi Charles, many thanks for your very kind comments. I have spent a good deal of my life, before retirement, writing copy, and presenting lectures, to both the general public and to industry on a variety of subjects but I have always believed that if you are going to present a video to the public then it has to be, to a certain extend, aimed at the lowest common denominator. I realise that this means that people who know something about the subject maybe get bored but they can skip over the "boring" bits and get to the more important parts. For those who know very little about the subject then I always hope that how I present it gives them an in-depth knowledge starting at "A" and going right through to "Z" but in a very logical order that is easy to follow and each part is following on from the previous part! Again, many thanks for you comments and I hope what I presented helped you! By the way, I am learning the guitar and how Jeff Beck does what he does I am only just now getting to grips with! Jeff is one of my favourites but Eric C has to be the best!!!

Everything explained in very easy to understand instructions, backed up with video. Not as confusing after understand how it works and what it can and can't do. if you have never flown a drone before remember the three basic rules:
      1) Read the manual!! (And understand it).
      2) Take it slow and easy; speed, height and distance will come with time.
      3) Don't begin to fly in windy conditions, you really have to know the controls well in order to do this without falling prey to the wind and seeing your drone being carried off into the wild, blue yonder never to be seen again!!!

    • @LindenStead1844MbdTuB
      @LindenStead1844MbdTuB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many thanks for your message. One thing I found out about these "amateur" drones (as opposed to the much bigger, heavier professional models) is that they are very easy to crash if there is any amount of wind. When I was learning I always chose a day when there was little, or no, wind and as I progressed I found that once I had mastered the controls then I could fly on a day with a bit more wind; but never go too high as you never know what the wind is like 50 or 100 feet from the ground!

    Very comprehensive video. Even my 63 yr old neighbor understood it. He couldn't even get the engine to start before he watched your video. And I don't know anything about drones. I have to admit, I wasn't looking forward to researching it, so I thought I'd try a video and hope it would break things down to its simplest form. My neighbor watched it and off he flew. Thank you so much. As Einstein said, "If you can't break it down to its simplest form, you don't really understand it." And you broke it down to its simplest form. Again, thank you.

      Many thanks for that. One of the jobs I did in a previous incarnation was writing instructions for a suite of software and I learned that these have to be written aimed at the lowest common denominator, i.e. those who know nothing about the software! Those who do can skip the bits they don't need but those who don't need the whole lot! Manufacturers often forget that - years ago I bought a Panasonic DVD player to link to my flat screen TV and the instructions were written in such a way that even my Son, who has a Masters and a pHd in Electronics and Communications, couldn't understand them!! That taught me some valuable lessons as to how to write, and give, presentations!

      Good call!! Whilst learning I found it was good to practice in a large space in your home - as you saw from the video I have a large conservatory so that was ideal - and when you have got to know the controls pick a day when there is little or no wind and fly in your garden (if it is big enough) or take it to a wide open space where you won't lose it if things get a little out of hand - a grassy field is good for this as you will do little damage if you have to bring it down! And, initially, don't fly too high or fast, I know this is tempting but take it in easy steps until you are really confident! Good flying!

      No they don't! Unlike Ni-Cd batteries Lithiums don't develop memory characteristics so you can recharge them at any time and they do not need to be fully discharged beforehand. The same applies to anything that uses Lithium's, such as mobile phones, certain household appliances etc etc. Hope that helps - enjoy flying!

      @@curtriekhof7627 One other point has just come to mind: I can't believe you picked it up for just $59.99??? It does beg one question: I know that Holy Stone have changed the design of the batteries since I got my drone and made this video so that the 4-gang charging hub that I have will no longer accept the new style batteries. The point is this: which model of 110D did you get - was it the same as mine which may have been excess stock that Amazon were clearing out at a reduced price or is it the new model with the re-designed batteries? If it is the latter then you got it at a terrific price but there is no charging hub currently available if you decide to buy more batteries to extend your flying time!

      @@LindenStead1844MbdTuB Yes I indeed got the new model and it came with the updated batteries (2) not only that, but they had a 15% off the $59.99 with free shipping so my overall cost was only $44.99 and only took 3 days to be delivered. It arrived on Oct 8, 2020 via USPS. But the story does not stop there. On Dec. 21, 2020 at just shortly after 6pm. I drove dove down the road from my house to some open farm pasture, appx. 15 acres of nothing but wide open open land. I did all my pre-flight prep and sent it up to hover at about 50' ( Little more than 3 meters ) to take some shots of the Christmas Star. Has it hovered for about 2 minutes, all of a sudden, it took off like a shot never to be seen again. I put together a group of 6 and we walked, spread apart about 30' ( 10 meters ) for about 2 miles, 2 different days, still nothing. I then decided to call Holy Stone Customer Service and explain what happened. I was completely awe struck when after they had me fill out a short form and questionnaire, I received an E-Mail stating that they were going to replace my HS110D and all of things I had left they wanted me to hand on to for spare parts and not to send anything back. Well, my replacement arrived Dec 23, 2020.

Radios for RC boats and cars are, invariably, quite small whereas if you look at radios such as Futaba or Spektrum (which are designed for aircraft and helicopters) they are somewhat bigger and certainly larger than the one for this drone. • @LindenStead1844MbdTuB
      @LindenStead1844MbdTuB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only time that I know of when the props will stop turning after landing is if you make a landing manually by holding the throttle joystick down, after a few seconds the motors will stop. I personally have not come across a situation where they stop after pressing the Engine Start/Landing button as I have always stopped them by holding the throttle down. If this is happening to you then my advice would be to contact Holy Stone direct and see if they have a fix.

I see that the drone, once it reaches a height, it doesn't capture anything on the ground, instead the camera captures whatever is visible at that level, like tree tops instead of people standing at the foot of the tree.

      I am not familiar with the 110G but I would assume the method of obtaining, and using the app is the same. I downloaded the user manual for the 110G and it clearly explains on page 13 how to get the app. I'm assuming that you have a QR Reader on your phone and you scanned the Android App Code which would enable you to download it to your phone. I use an iPhone so, again, I'm not familiar with any Android apps. The app is "HS GPS V1" and if you have done everything correctly, and have followed all the instructions exactly, then I have no idea why it won't connect. Excellent, thoughtful review. Thank you. One aspect I wish you had included is that of synching the smartphone to the drone. I seem to be having difficulty with that. Secondly, if I can get the phone and drone synched, but not flying, is there a way to turn on the camera and see the camera's image on my phone/controller? Oh, one more thing. I find the manual to be a real Con for your list. As is typically the case, there are some great engineers behind all aspects of the hardware and software design, but these companies seem to think that anyone can write the manual, often as an afterthought. No so. Invest a relatively small amount and hire a professional tech writer. Thanks, again.

      I don't know which country you are in but the UK's User Manual for this drone lists all the steps to go through on page 22. If your book is different then look for the page that has a header of "App Function" and that will give you all the info you need. If you have tried that, and nothing is working, then you really need to contact HStone to get a resolution - hope that helps. I have also found User Manuals to be lacking at times. As I have said before, they tend to be written by company people who are too close to the product and make various assumptions about how much WE know.
      For instance, years ago I bought a Panasonic DVD player to link to my Panasonic flat screen TV. The instructions were written in such a way as to be unintelligible!! Even my Son, who has a Masters and PhD in Electronics and Communications, couldn't figure it out!!!

      @LindenStead1844MbdTuB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe, Sorry to be so long in replying but Christmas got in the way! I would not remove the camera and try to shim it as (1) the camera is held onto the drone body by two lugs at the back of the camera so taking it off to shim it will render those lugs redundant but, more importantly, (2) the electrical contacts between the camera and the drone body are arranged such that if you shim the camera that contact will be broken and hence you will lose the control of the camera. Hope that helps, happy new year!

      Hi Richard, hope you find the video of help to you. I've tried to cover most things but the one thing I didn't go into any great detail on was controlling the drone with a smart phone. I personally don't like this method of control as sometimes finger contact with the phone screen can be broken and not work and if that happens who knows what will happen to the drone?? I know that some people like this method but I don't. I don't know if there is a problem with the conductivity in my skin but I often lose control of the screen on my iPhone or iPad for this very reason so that is why I play safe and use the transmitter to control the drone. Have a happy New Year!

    Really good job! Very thorough and quite complete. I'd have two suggestions: you seemed to desert the use of the smart phone midway through your explanation. You never showed how/why/when you use the device button on the smart phone. I don't understand as much about the use of the phone as I would have hoped for. Secondly, I would have appreciated an outdoor segment showing you at the controls, actually flying it. Otherwise, thanks!

      Hi Dave, I didn't use the smart phone as, I think, I did mention in the video that I don't like using a phone to fly the drone - I much prefer the controller - and use of the phone is explained in the user manual.
      There are many videos on TH-cam that show people flying the drones and I thought that was less useful than showing what the drone actually sees and the quality it produces! Hope that explains things.

    • @LindenStead1844MbdTuB
      @LindenStead1844MbdTuB  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MyaJay, this unfortunately is the "nature of the beast"! You have to remember what the differences are between the hobby drones that we buy and the professional drones used for film making. The pro drones have all sorts of electronics built into them that will keep them steady in mid air - electronic distance measuring and compensating, compensation for wind etc etc, Hobby drones do not have this so all controlling has to be done, firstly, with the trim buttons and then with the joysticks and this is all part and parcel of the learning process.
      Get into a spacious part of your house and gently take off; you will then find that you will have to use the trim buttons to stabilise drift on the drone - see the user manual. One thing you have to remember is that there is a time lag between you operating the trims and the drone actually responding to that (I think I mentioned this in the video). You should be able to get somewhere near a static hover although it will never be perfect and it will always drift somewhat, as I said, these hobby drones don't have the sophisticated electronics that the pro drones have. Once you get outside, however, the wind takes over and that is when you learn how to use the joysticks in order to get the drone to fly where you want it to - I'm afraid it is practice, practice and more practice - eventually it will all make sense and become instinctive!! In the beginning choose days that have little or no wind and work up from there - we all go through that process!! Hope that helps!
