@@conrad1468 hello i have the same engine and i have a question about cold start mechanism of the pump, when you have it on can you hear the diference in the engine running? becouse i cant understund if it works or not, thanks
@@sk8foreal it’s a very small difference. They only time I hear a difference is on cold start. I pull the choke knob out and start. Once it’s started I push the choke in and I can hear the RPMs drop just a little. That’s the only time I’ve ever heard a different sound with the choke out. It drives the same with it out or in.
@@conrad1468 I'm not entirely sure yet. It seems like maybe worthwhile to just do all the seals if I'm already doing the head gasket? Unless you think I can replace enough seals with the engine still attached to be worthwhile?
@@conrad1468 hello friend i have the same engine and it was run smooth, i replaced the timing belt and after that it has some plays on iddle and on higher rpm, not much but is not smooth like before, i checked the time marks 100 times and they are on point, what can be happened? do i need to tune fuel pump? what do you think went off?
Thank so much for you video. I have a 1978 VW 1.6 cc. Rabbit diesel. I did exactly what you did the engine is working now, but the RPM are to high and making a lot smog. I want to ask you if the pump need to adjust. I really appreciated if you can help me in this matter.
Thank you for watching!! I’m guessing before the timing was set the previous owner adjusted the idle up. If the timing is correct adjust the idle down to normal.
Thank you for watching! I am not sure what the tool holder. It came with the gauge and holder in a kit. Check out the website Metal Nerd VW Tools. He lists them all.
I would say, yes it will need to be removed. Unless your tool is shorter and it’ll fit in that area. It’s a tight squeeze in between the injection pump and brake booster pump.
Hey mate when I rotate the engine counter clockwise to find the point where the gauge stops, the gauge doesn’t seem to move at all until I rotate the engine counter clockwise considerably. Way more than what’s seen in your video. Any idea what the issue might be?
Thank you for watching! Is the “choke” or pump advance shut off? That did some wacky stuff when I forgot to put the knob down. Is your gauge in the whole way? It should move almost the whole time until it hits the flat on the injection pump lobe.
@@samuelbrennan8382 you’re very welcome! Glad I could help. I would confirm on the back of the pump the lever is actually pushed downwards. I’ve had broken cable and “thought” it was working. You know what I mean. 😀 Also, confirm you are on TDC and not on BDC (180 deg out). I’ve done that before too. Good luck!
I think you can follow the same process to set your timing but refer to the repair manual for the proper timing MM degrees for a turbo diesel. Turbo and non-turbo have different degrees of timing.
To be honest I never messed with the idle. It’s basically whatever the pump is set at. The repair manual says 800-850rpm at 60C (140f) engine temp. I don’t have a diesel tachometer so it will take a special tool to measure the RPMs.
Go to the Parts Place for VW parts. Look up Diesel Timing Tool Kit Item #: 17821 This is the complete timing and timing belt kit. For just the timing tool with dial look up Injection Pump Dial Indicator Item #: 3508
Perfect demonstration! 👌 You are a great tutor, thanks for the effort you put into making this video.👍
Thank you Sir!! Best of luck with your MK1!

Best timing description I've found! Just got an 85 diesel Golf for $600 that needs a new head gasket so figure I may as well reseal the whole engine.
Thank you Sir!! Are you pulling the engine or replacing seals with the engine in?

@@dropCvoices I’d change the gaskets I could reach while the engine is in. Like cam seal, valve cover gasket, etc….

Awesome video! Sweet rabbit! Good tip on tightening/loosening towards the head! I had bought a special socket for the injectors when I did it.
Thank you Sir!! Oh yes, very important to push towards the head. What made the VW socket special? Original VW dealer tool?
i made a special socket. aint gettin rich off me.
Thanks a lot for this video. I am from Costa Rica and nobody knows how to do it.

You’re video was great! I also set my fuel pump timing off of this video
Excellent to hear! Glad it worked out.

You’re welcome and awesome!! 😀
I really love your video, is excellent to me. Could you please the name of the the gauge and order to buy it. Thank Cory.
Thank you Sir! You will have to Google “VW timing dial tool diesel” to find the tool. It will come up in your area.
Is there a reason to remove the vacuum pump or is just for the extra room?
I would say, yes it will need to be removed. Unless your tool is shorter and it’ll fit in that area. It’s a tight squeeze in between the injection pump and brake booster pump.
Im having trouble getting the little cap off the transmission, any tips?
A long screw and push on the cap on an angle to twist the cap off.
Is it possible for the timing to get off by it’s self somehow? Or can this only happen when you take the pump off/ apart
Maybe the mounting nuts getting loose and the pump slides out of time. Worn pump? Worn leaking injectors might throw it off.

What brand dial indicator do you use? I haven’t found a brand that is accurate enough
The gauge says .01mm - 10mm range. The back has a part number of A17238 but I do not think it means anything.
Can you drop the part number for the tool and dial?

He should've put a paper towel or rag in the hole left when the vacuum pump was removed
You’re right!! I should have. Don’t want anything falling into the engine.
