I've never seen underhand bowing used on a cello. What are the advantages of underhand compared to abovehand bowing? Also, did you start the first note on a D on the A string? It sounds different than when I start the piece.
@@Bumpus07 apologies for the super late response, I've only just spotted your comment! Underhand vs overhand... A bit of a can of worms I'm afraid. I wouldn't say that there are advantages to either way, they're simply different. I'm personally more comfortable overhand, but I'd put that down to the fact that it's the way I learned and have played cello since I was 5 years old. Underhand gives you a different approach to articulation and sustain, and so by extension to phrasing in general. We try to use it when we believe it's historically appropriate, and it was certainly far more widespread in the 17th and 18th century than among "baroque cellists" nowadays. The D may sound different as we're tuned to a lower pitch than standard modern pitch.
