Speaking as the owner of three 4Runners (90, 04 & 05) that get real-world off-highway use, I must say that the stock fuel-tank skid plate is tough. It is not flimsy. I did replace one with an RCI skid, which I've concluded was a mistake. Unlike the stock skid, the RCI skid does not provide much peripheral protection. The front especially is exposed, providing only the minimal upward bend. The stock skid provides much more coverage. And the stock unit has many drain holes for water and debris to escape. As shown in this video, the RCI plate has none.
The stock skid might have more coverage but it's definitely thiner then the RCI. The RCI are made for rock protection skid plates, but there is no way the stock ones can handle that. My trucks proof that they can't handle rocks, my gastank is bent because the stock skid plate isnt intended as a skid plate
You guys should definitely be using anti-sieze on the bolts prior to installation....looks good though! I actually like the design and look of the C4 fuel tank skid better.
Installed mine yesterday. All bolts had flat washers but there were 3 lock washers. Wasn't sure which ones they were for so I put them on the 3 hanging bars. No instructions either from RCI or on this video as to where those were supposed to go. Also, for the PITA hanging one with the 45 degree angle, mine came with a long one and one that was a little bit shorter. I can only assume the shorter one was for an FJ? Again, it would have been nice for RCI to tell you that in the instructions. Unless it was added to the box by mistake from one of the packers. Definitely a good skid plate though, glad I installed it.
@@originalg00kster The directions on RCI say nothing about the 4th piece, I had printed the instructions from their site, and was also confused by the extra piece.
What was the issue with the RCI gas tank skid meshing with the C4 sliders? Did you have to drill the 3 driver side holes larger on the tank skid?? I am awaiting C4 sliders to go with the RCI tank skids myself.. thanks
It was so long ago but if I recall the problem was each brand wanted to use the same locations and it would work together, we had to cut a small amount to make it work
How dumb was it to removed the OEM skid plate was coved the fuel tank 360 degrees and installing the POS plate cover only the bottom of the tank. Wasted money… !!!

Looks like this could be an awesome debris collector
That would be funny to see... What's under there after 1 year

Yeah? I'll have to check them out

All of the install instructions are on their website.

Had to trim my RCI gas tank skid since it was rubbing on the drive shaft when turning right. Didn't rub until I installed 37" tires - 35" tires ok
That's odd, why would that happen? Both your driveshaft and gas tank skid are in a fixed location
@sven norman how much did you have to trim? i am currently having that issue now after installing taller rear coils
@@tjstoys7371 One inch by four inches, probably could cut less.

Great video. Thanks
Happy to help
Is the RCI gas tank skid strong enough to support the weight of 4runner?
Yep, seen it happen
Looks like a short closed end ratchet would work for that "pain in the butt bolt"?
Quite possibly, maybe I should have tried that
My RCI plate is hiting my rear drive shaft🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I don't feel that way at all. This cover is much thicker and more durable then the flimsy stock
