I did this and it worked perfectly. However, I no longer put the tap in the outer bucket. I find it easier to just lift the inner bucket out and pour off the tea and put the inner bin back in. The spout doesn't work for me because it is too close to the ground. I keep the bucket I am adding to on the kitchen floor. I set the inner bucket on a bucket lid while pouring off the tea. Quick and easy.
Thank you so much for sharing. You have saved me money on buying bokashi bin. I have exactly the same bins as the ones in the video. I will be busy the next few days making bokashi composting. Very inspiring.
Thanks for sharing! We can't have a compost bin where we are but I couldn't see how just one bokashi bin would be enough for us. I'm going to gather supplies for a few bins over the coming weeks :)
Can the liquid drained from a bokashi bin be used to inoculate, start, or increase the bacteria in shedded newspape, or say bran, as per your method, instead of newly purchased inoculate ?. Thank you.
Thanks Nev for another great vid - finally got around to making one :-) was easier to make than rat-proofing the bath tub worm farms, where food residuals unwanted by chooks or horse end up. I look forward to many emaciated rats !!
I like the ideas that you used the spare lid to make the pusher. Do you leave the pusher inside the bucket all the time or just use it to squeeze the air out of the food scrap and then keep it outside the bucket? When you stack 2 buckets, I think there is still a chance that the air still gets into the gap between them and make the system aerobic. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks
Howdy, yes I leave the pusher in all the time. In terms of air getting in between the buckets, they are a very tight fit and it has not been a problem for us. :-)
Great stuff. Thank you. Do you think the tap could be omitted? To drain the system could you not simply pull the inside bucket out and tip out the liquid from the outside bucket?
Great video - thanks.I am in the process of setting up a dog waste compost system as well. Th3 additives just arrived today. I assume they are the same.
Question, If you make a third bin, where you put your first bucket bokashi makings and mix it with potting soil, would you get after a month fine indoors potting mix?
Probably, but it depends on what you put in your bokashi bucket to start with. It starts the breakdown process by fermentation but quite often the material retains its shape. Put a tomato in and it gets broken down, but comes out looking like a tomato
@@underthechokotree2792 Tx for the reply. So I get pickled garbage instead of potting soil? Is there a better suitable method for a non garden household?
@@PaithanXOX I know a lady who puts a layer of the material from her bokashi bin into her pots, then puts the potting soil in on top. This provides fertility while reducing the amount of potting soil used
Thanks for the useful tutorial, I haven't been able to find in my country the product that you add to the compost to not be smelly.. Is there something else that you recomend to try?
Hi Ingrid, the system uses the effective micro-organism in the bokashi to do the work, I don't know of anything else that will do the job, sorry. Can you order it from another country via the internet? Once you have it there are tutorials by other people showing you how to reproduce it
@@andrewporfyri559 The Bokashi system uses either sawdust or a spray carrying an effective microorganism which ferments the organic waste. When use properly the system does not give off the "rotting" odour of hydrogen sulphide. If it does that says you are not using enough bokashi material. No 'chemicals' as such, this process is biological.
This is one of the most thorough and easy to follow video on DIY Bokashi Containers. Thank you so much!
Thank you 🌺 it's a great idea. I've been watching some videos about bokashi, learning about it, and this is by far the most useful
Thank you! :-)

What a great idea using the sare lid and tap. Will refine my version to suit!

Yup, that would work! I just like bells and whistles :-)
Do you have to put a brick or something on the bottom of the outer bucket order to keep the inner bucket elevated so that it will drain?
No, when one bucket fits inside another there are a few centimeters gap between the two, at the bottom

Good question, you are probably correct! :-)
Could this system be used for composting toilet waste as well and if so what would your recommendations be ?
how will it wok if its smaller.? I want to make a 2 gallon one for my small kitchen
Give it a go!
I don't have Em•1 can i use Lactic Acid Bacteria that's all i have.

you add this to a worm bin? they will eat it right? does not harm the worms?

What is materiel of these buckets? Are these ordinary buckets?
Yeah, just ordinary polypropylene buckets from bunnings, or better yet if you can get them second hand!

I cannot separate my bins to get the liquid out of the bottom.
You didn't put in the tap?
Buying chemicals which come in plastic spray bottles to spray in the bin defeats the purpose of saving the environment and money doesn't it?
What chemicals are you talking about?
@@underthechokotree2792 Most commercial produced kitchen (indoor) compost units say you should use some sprays to speed the process & to stop odors
