  • We have been planting trees at KIB for 20 years. During that time, we have listened to the research and worked to continuously improve the way we plant trees. www.kibi.org/program/communit...

I've just watched about a dozen planting videos after reading Forest Service and Extension planting guides. Many miss the excavation of the top of the potted tree or are too long. This video is concise and correct! The tree seems to be planted a little high, but it will settle. Better high than low! Thank you. Great video.

I knew all of this stuff but the one thing I wasn’t sure about was how much you can rip into the rootball without damaging the tree. And it seems like you can take a lot out and it still be good. I can’t believe the tree can take that but hey I guess it can

This is an educational video and it would be interesting to know what if soil needs treatment when is full of sand and I thought 💭 good drainage is needed to avoid root rod. Thank you for sharing

This was the most helpful video I've watched. I couldn't believe that you had to cut that huge root, however, it was clear that it was growing in a circle. Did you use your saw to shave the entire circumferance of the sides? The video only showed you doing this to one side, although I assume you did it to the whole thing. Lastly, I was surprised at how high I need to plant. I am doing a serviceberry bush. Do the same principles apply? Thank you.

I'm happy to see this on the eve of our neighborhood tree planting. You might add what to do if the hole has been made too deep. Removing some old tree roots at our sites has probably left one or two holes too deep. We'll refill the holes and stamp the soil down for a solid base at the right depth before setting the tree in.

What about planting in a hard clay soil, planting fruit tree this way will kill the tree? What about the graph tree, where is the curve graph side facing? North or south? Thx for sharing.

Correct way to handle and position the new tree is by the root ball and not the trunk to prevent damage to root system. This tree is man handled by the trunk and carelessly thrown / bounced around throughout the video.

The top of the root ball is to be 2-3 inches ABOVE the surrounding grade, not level with it

@@natee2169 Not level because the tree will sink and go below level as the soil compresses and settles.
