Super cool design! Only thing I would have done differently would not have that wood grain peace behind the seats. Would have had it the same as the blue trim interior. But that is just personal preference. You did an amazing job !!!😁 Super Cool 😎
Very cool project. I didn’t realize it was a kit. Beyond your control but the one thing I think I would change is spread the bed walls out to the wheel well seams. Just a personal thought. That's the first fiberglass mod I have ever seen for the today's version of the Bug. Back in the day they had a crap load of fiberglass mods for the old VW's
Yeah the old air coolers had every conceivable type of body to go on them! Some of them were pretty cool. But now days, I can't afford to cut up classic air coolers! The new beetles are a dime a dozen though
Interesting build. I like the concept. Where I live the rivets wouldn't pass our strict laws which demand an engineers report, but an all steel version would work with welded joints, a lot more work. I like your version and the surf board sets it off.
Nobody cares about the stiffness after modification??? The Beetle was specially build to be stiff with its unique design and when you cut so many metall and put some aluminum and rivets together i never would have a bad road or an accident in this... This thing needs a steel tube frame underneth all of the new panels and an rollcage tube also. And then all the Space you waste, for excample the old spar tire place... Sometimes its good that we in germany have so much rules for change and rebuild our cars. The rest of the build looks very good and in high quality, build this stiff and safety and i want one also :-)
Nice looking little pickup. The kit doesn't appear to compromise the original structural rigidity. It may actually improve it. No technical talk though, just that muzaak. There's always the venerable mute option.
Amazing job!!!! I love what you have done!! It’s too bad you couldn’t hinge the box floor, so you could still use your spare tire well.....other than that, it’s perfect!

I totally understand that not everyone likes the swoopy lines of the rear end and it doesn't exactly match the more rounded lines of the Beetle front. Like you said, its all a matter of taste.

gary bulwinkle yeah it was like magic! Lol, I put my CC info into the website listed at the end of the video, you know smythkitcars.com and like magic a box full of parts appeared a couple weeks later! Smyth Beetle Ute kit!
Great job man! At least you didn't have to work around the motor like I had to do, 40 years ago! But really, great looking car and I think that you said it was a diesel? If it is, you should get around what, 50 miles to the gallon. One of the sales guys that used to come by the shop had a VW wagon, don't remember the model, but that's what he told me that he got with his. I love the small diesels anyway, cheap to run and last forever.
Did you buy that truck section as a kit or did you build the panels and outter skin off camera now my wife wants me to build her one and if I can get a kit over fab'n the panels it would save me some headaches
I saw lots of metal getting cut out of the car but how stiff is the new structure?I saw lots of bonding and riveting but no welding....I'm curious how this compares in structural rigidity to the original laser welded car.
the added structure is all aluminum so you can't weld it to the original steel. But if you take a spirited drive, you can tell that the car is actually more rigid after the kit. The video doesn't show everything, there are a lot of 8 mm stainless bolts in there too. If you are interested in more data on the safety/engineering, visit www.smythkitcars.com/engineering
fantastic job. Just saw a yellow one cruising around Orlando, before Christmas, and was amazed. What about all that wasted space for the spare tire??? Also, did it seem ridged and crash worthy, after slicing and dicing?? Actually wouldn't mind building one myself. JT
JT, I am very confident in the safety and integrity of the kit. This is the third one I have built from Smyth Performance. If you are interested in more on the engineering and safety, visit their website, WWW.smythkitcars.com and look for the tab at the top labeled "safety and engineering". the new 'box" you build down each side is extremely rigid. And the stout floor spars tie them together well. He also has pictures of Christ Kingston's beautiful Jetta kit that was rear ended and slammed into the car in front of him. I'm impressed with how the kit handled the impact
If you think to do one of these don't overlook the opportunity to take the dash apart to get to the heat / AC box and redo the control doors with the big holes in them and foam glued to both sides of the holey doors such that when the factory foam falls apart you are left with little to NO HEAT ......To recover the heater doors we use a plastic sheet packing material or you can buy plug kits to pop into the holes and solve the inevitable problem that way ....
That was absolutely brilliant - what a cracking result. It must have increased the value of the little old beetle no end. Fantastic!!

I honestly honor your work perfectly done 10 000/10
Thank you sir
