Wood Gasifier Explodes on Video

  • Wood gasifier doing a test run on shelled corn explodes shortly after using the shaker grate. I think oxygen rushed in through the open top too quickly to be burned, mixed with the gas in the barrel, and exploded.

    I don't know if you had a char - bed set up in your reduction zone. Corn is a poor fuel choice. It is difficult to maintain a 20 % or less moisture content of your fuel. Corn is loaded with starches, you add heat and it breakes down into simple sugars, Under extream heat and when you did the shaker you had the hopper lid open an unlimited supply of oxygin to the fuel mix, you got your gasifier to backfire the moment you used the shaker, In gasifier operations this is called a puff back. Your puff back was more violent of a reaction because of the sugar in your fuel, Also it's a good idea to make sure your fuel size is correct and proportionally larger then the holes in your grates and it's actually ash when it passes through. Down draft gasifiers are designed to run on wood or wood products. The sugars produced by your fuel choice will continue to be problematic.

    Hi Bob
    I'd say 99% the air came form the door.
    Shaking the grate just brought some hot ambers as an ignition source.
    If it was too much air going through the bed it'd have started burning.
    You might try using fiberglass rope as a gasket.

    Was you surprised not to see pop corn when you opened the door? lol
    I didn't get a good look at the door, but no matter what if you have to ever open the top during operation then that weak ash door is a safety hazard. I think you may be right for the reason why the door seal failed, but the fact is that door seal can fail when the top is opened, shaking the grate or not if just out of freak accidents, if the bottom gets too much air at the same time it has highly flammable fuel available it will burst that weak door seam. I think it would be good to make a better door seam that can handle the pressure if/when that happens while the top is opened during operation. Mechanically the door must be stronger and mechanically sealed not just sealant.

    Hmmm, that must have been caused by "Pop Corn".
    This kind of thing is normal, and is often called a "sneeze".
    You will eventually get used to it :) .

    • @tonto_bob
      @tonto_bob  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I think that it wasn't just from the corn, currently working on better sealing of the ash door. Don't want to worry about this all the time. Thanks for the comment!

      @CNCmachiningisfun 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tonto bob
      Explosions are fairly normal in gasifiers, so it is something we have all become accustomed to.
      On my first gasser, it used to explode so violently that it would send burning material up to a height of 60 feet.
      At night, this was always an amazing spectacle :) .

    • @tonto_bob
      @tonto_bob  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That happened to me today, blew my semi-permanently sealed ash door 25 yards down my driveway, and bent the hell out of the barrel lid, sounded like 5 shotguns going off at once. It happened when I finally burned through the corn brick in my reduction zone thus allowing a large amount of air immediately able to rush into the barrel. Not going to use a barrel anymore, going to put the reactor core in a less voluminous container, like a 30 gal propane tank, so my "pops" aren't so violent due to less gas volume and better metal weld-ability for sealing purposes.

    • @CNCmachiningisfun
      @CNCmachiningisfun 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +tonto bob
      Yup, I hear ya bro.
      The barrel is ok, but that huge volume does scare me a bit.
      Propane tanks, or even air compressor cylinders, are surely a safer bet.
      Your thinking is pretty solid, so you are taking the right steps and learning the right lessons.
      Keep up the good work.

    I think you came out quite well on this. Do be careful. Best of luck on your next try. Good to see some one willing to test and try ideas. You learn so much from experiences. Glad you made the video of it and sure does make it easy to better consider the causes and avoid them. Might check air getting in around the shaker shaft. You might even close up the unit as best you can and blow air into it and see where there is any smoke or air coming out. Best of Luck on your next test.

    When you added the corn it was too much and it smothers itself only temporarily then it ignites in an explosion. I have a corn burning furnace and I've done this by hand feeding corn in trying to build a larger fire quickly in witch case I did.

    yeah dude, each kernal of corn has water in it, and exploded at about the same time, this means your heat is even, and hot, since you had multiple kernals explode within several hundreds of a second with each other. Like a bunch of firecrackers going off at once, from the water pressure.

    Some of the videos I've been watching said that if you allow your fuel to get to low you will get a cycling of fresh air and then not enough air causing small explosions where it is burning. I am definitely no expert on this subject I have never made one or even seen one operate other than on video but that would be my guess.

    do you think a Gasifier would make enough heat to produce steam when burning wood?

    • @tonto_bob
      @tonto_bob  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the core gets to 2000 Fahrenheit, and the outside of the hopper, main unit, and first cyclone get to well over 600 Fahrenheit as well. This is wasted heat if not insulated properly, and it could be used for many things. So yes.
