    Just when I thought I heard it all “the polish plane” 😂 the oscillating saw idea is brilliant. Thanks so much for the hack!

    I just finished making a work bench and learned how to notch the legs. I used a circular saw and chisel, but about half way through I thought why not use an oscillating saw for the clean up. So here you have it!

    Excellent demonstration, thanks! I’ve used a chisel in the past, but the oscillating saw is obviously more efficient. If all you’ve got is a chisel, the wider the better in my experience - and make sure you keep the flat side down! Good luck with your big project, I’ll have a look now and then to see how it’s going. 👍

    Excellent! Exactly what i needed and straight to the point. The bit about the "polish planer" is an interesting idea.

      👍🏻Hope it helps! As for the expression, I don’t know where that originated from but have had a couple older guys share that with me in the past. Thanks for the comment!

    Need to notch studs for a let in brace, the walls had a lot of termite damage and studs need to be sistered. The corner has two wing or let-in braces and I can only access from the inside.

    Thanks for the tip! You can also get these flat bottom blades for the circ saw now which helps too so you don't have the ridges. Good luck with the build!

      Sawzall blades are cheap. A knotch should only take 4 cuts.

    Thanks! I am going to be notching some 4x6’s for a gravel shed pad. I’ll try your oscillating tool method.

    Chain saw works great.

      Never tried a chainsaw but I would say you have no trouble removing the material. I assume you would use the tip of bar?

    Why not use a jigsaw?

    • @goodlucktrying21
      @goodlucktrying21  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically you are cutting notches into large material (4”-12”) so a jigsaw blade would not cut through the material

    My 2 cents- dont notch your posts it weakens them and invites rot

      Would you please explain why notch cause rot? I saw tons of people not going on pole to increase the strength rather than put all the weight on screws or nails. What if I stain it after notched, will it prevent rot?

    • @goodlucktrying21

      @tom713BLVD I have always notched my post, I like the weight on the post and not on a fastener, also I feel it marries the system together. I could be wrong but I think peoples concern is that you are cutting through the treated area and exposing the interior of the post that could be open to moisture intrusion. I am no professional by any means but I can go to post that I notched 20 years ago and they have not suffered any rot. I assume this debate will go on and on. If you are notching at the top of a post and that joint is exposed to water being able to work down in that seam I could see how that could be problematic but in my experience I have always covered that with more material. I have never used it but they carry a Butyl Joist Tape that would stop water intrusion if you are concerned. Don’t take my word as the gospel but this is the way I see it. Thanks for the comment!
