    Fun story : I got my fist and only cello from this lovely old lady near my town, As you said I took it to my house and played, and it was at that point I knew I had to have that cello, no matter what it takes, damm what a great sound, so warm and deep, I feel kinda bad because she only wanted to get rid of it and she sold it to me at 360 bucks, this cello is actually worthing 4000, always take a good opportunity

    Your channel is a great find.
    Last fall, I traded an expensive bicycle for a decent cello because, at age 56, I wanted to finally follow through on my wish "Someday I'm going to learn how to play the cello.". And watching your channel has really helped.
    All I'm going to say at this point is that I can't walk past my cello without picking it up and playing for 10 or 20 minutes.
    Keep posting tutorials. And I'll keep telling myself that I'll pay for a lesson or two someday.

      The learning process? Nope. Not enjoying it.
      I'm enjoying the fleeting moments when I get a decent sound out of it. And those are what keep me going.

    *Beginner cellos: ~ $2,000*
    (Pros: price, you’ll work harder to sound good so your skills will potentially advance more)
    (Cons: the quality will keep you from sounding good even when you have developed your skill set)
    *Advanced cellos: ~$3,000-10,000*
    *Professional cellos: $12,000-30,000+*
    Tips when buying:
    - At local music shops, haggling is possible
    - Some dealers who know you’re a beginner will try to take advantage of you and charge more then a cello is worth so always try the cello out before purchasing
    - Do a lot of research before making a large investment because you’ll be with this instrument for many years

    When i began playing (age 8) i rented a cello, it was true shit but it was good enough to learn the basics. Then when i was big enough to get a 3/4 cello i rented a slightly better one until i was able to play on a whole cello.
    For that one i tested about 10 cellos and 10 bows i think. The seller in the shop was also a cellist himself so he could advise me very well. I ended up buying a cello for €3500,- and a bow for €100,-. I know it's a really cheap bow but i just listened to the combination of the sound and the cello and chose the one that had the best sound.
    I think i've got this cello for around 5 years now i'm 21 and i'm really happy with it, I still play every day :)

    Not knowing if I'd be any good at playing the Cello and if I'd have the patience to persist in learning, I went for a rental. Cost me 300 euro for a year, at the end of which I'll decide if I will buy one, continue renting for another year or stop. The latter option (stopping) is just a theoretical option, though :-)

    I bought my first cello recently at a yard sale for only $25! I've never even held a cello before. It looks great but what do I know? I'm going to bring it to a music store to have it set up and to find out if it's a decent enough cello to practice on. All the TH-cam videos have helped introduce me to this instrument. I never even knew it has to have a sound post! What the heck is that?! Well, I'm on my way.

    I’m sorry but this is absurd. sick of hearing elitists telling prospective cellists that they cannot get started without saving up $1,000 dispensable income.
    I’m an adult learner, started on a cecilio cco-100 for $130 couple years ago and I was happy with even the subpar sound I got at first, but as I learned to handle an instrument that was rougher I found much more satisfaction when I played well. after a year I bought some nicer jarger strings for $100 and my $230 investment sounded amazing and was such a joy to play everyday. I’ve now upgraded to a cco-300 and while I will recommend spending the extra $150 for this model if you can; I can absolutely attest that you can and should start playing cello with a $150 instrument if that’s all you can afford.

      Hi Joshua, That’s great that things worked out for you! What I don’t like is when a student starts out on a cheap instrument and then becomes discouraged to the point of quitting because of the sound quality. I certainly don’t mean to sound elitist.

    ALWAYS Have another musician along with you when you buy an instrument! My first cello, which I thought was really cool, but cost ~$2000, but, we luckily rented it, because that thing was worthless. I went to a smaller string shop and got an intermediate cello for the same price, and is night and day from my first one, and I had my teacher along for this one.

    For anyone that lives in or near Las Vegas, there is an awesome private business called Desert Strings that sells and rents the 4 main string instruments. What's awesome about it is you can rent for pretty cheap and 100% of the rent goes towards the instrument... however you are not locked into the instrument, so if by the time you have it "paid off" and you are ready to upgrade, you can just carry everything you have paid over and trade it in. my cello is $35 per month and my wife's violin is $15 per month. the only thing that doesn't go towards instrument is $5 maintenance and insurance per month and $3 for violin. when you first rent you have to give 3 months upfront. but still $150 to walk away with 2 high quality instruments for 3 months is not bad. they might have 2 other locations in eastern states but I'm not sure where.

      the brand of violin my wife got is a Caprice and the Cello is an Angel Taylor. I believe the owner said his Caprice instruments are handmade by his family in... China? I think... not sure the reputation of those brands but the quality certainly sounds good to me.

    what are your thoughts on an electric cello for a beginner?

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't recommend it honestly. On an electric, you won't fully experience the range of tones that an acoustic produces and therefore, won't learn how to produce these varied tones, dynamics, nuances, etc..

    Hi, Sarah. I have a line on a Mathias Thoma cello at a really good price. From what I’ve seen in the market, it’s a good make, being crafted in Romania. I play guitar so am familiar with acoustic instrument construction. I think I can make a decent evaluation of it and am going to look at it. It’s from a private owner who doesn’t play. Since they are local to me, I can get my hands on it. Otherwise, I would never buy sight unseen. Also a cello at any classical instrument store would be beyond my price point. This individual is eager to sell and therefore is offering it at a real low price. I’ll let you all know how I do.

    What are your thoughts on electric cellos, for beginners? I was desperate to learn cello (blame apocalyptica and the fact that some of the best pop/rock songs always have a cello line to make them super emotional), but there was no way I was going to afford $1,800 on an instrument - not for a expressionist hobby.
    So I looked for electric cellos (hoping that they were just as good as electric guitars) - I found one in UK for £450 new (called a Stagg) and it has kept me good so far. - Though now I'm worried that I'm just ignorant of how good they Should be.

    I got my cello for 100 bucks from a college student upstate (we were then locked out of the car and had to call the cops lol) . It wasn't perfect but it was better than nothing. My orchestra teacher was the sweetest and fixed it up for me.^^ The nut was too high so she just sanded it down and the bridge as well I believe. But it has developed seam cracks on the left front side and right back side ( If that makes sense). And it's sounds ok, not bad at all. The 'C' string is a bit of a rattler but I don't mind it.^^

    Is my old cello worth anything? I inherited it last year. My great grandmother said her ancestor bought it on a trip to italy long ago.
    The paper inside i think says Andreo Guarner . Cremo1695. Hard to read though very old paper and in latin. Cello is in decent good condition it seems. I thought to turn it into a dvd shelf.

    Hey :) I seem to comment on a lot of your videos sorry 😂 recently changed my C string and it won't... Play. Like my bow won't play on it and even if I pluck it, it vibrates violently but it's perfectly in tune. I'm not sure if I even make sense but hopefully you understand and can hopefully help. Thanks

      You're good! It sounds as though you tuned it an octave lower than it should be. So, it might be the right note, but it will need to be tightened up another octave.

    I'm surprised at these prices. Maybe good cellos are just cheaper in Asia? I got a really good cello for about USD1,800. sounds great and easy to play. Made in China though. But if it sounds good and is easy to play that should be all that matters?

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +K Lu Yep, that's all that matters. :) Those are just the prices here in the U.S. If you go to little instrument shops and really spend time searching around, you could find a better deal, but that can be a very very long process.

    +sarahjoy Sarah! I've recently found your channel and I am in love with your videos! I'm beginning to learn how to play now but I want to buy a good cello - even if it's more expensive - because I believe it will be best in the long haul. However, because I'm a newbie, I have no idea about the differences between them. For instance: what's the sound difference between a Montagnana and a Stradivarius? Thanks for everything!

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wonderful! That's exciting! Well, I really don't like going by brand names. The best thing to do, is to just go to a reputable shop, try out at least 15-20 cellos, and pick which one has a tone that you like. That's how I found mine. It's an old German cello from the 60's. I do have a video that could help: th-cam.com/video/1Z9J5VZsfwg/w-d-xo.html

      +Sarah Joy oh, thank you SO much for taking the time to reply! I'm gonna try to do that. The only problem is that over here (Brazil) it's common to either buy those production-line cellos (very poor craftsmanship) or you go to a luthier for a custom made one, which is A) Much more expensive and B)You don't have much of a choice, you "order" one and what you get is...well, what you get!lol I asked about Strad x Montagnana because people say there's a significant sound difference because of the way they're built. Montagnanas supposedly have a deeper sound, but being new to all of this, I truly don't know. Oh well, I'm gonna follow your advice and try many different ones until I find "the one"! Thank you again for sharing your talent and expertise with the rest of us! You're a gem!

    Hello Sarah, i follow your channel with great pleasure. I am a 42-year-old Portuguese native who started about a year and a half ago studying and practicing cello.
    I'm trying to upgrade my cello. But I have little budget. In your opinion, what makes the biggest difference? New strings or new bow?
    My cello is a version of the "Stentor" for students and the original strings as well as the bow are not very good...
    Thanks and I'll be waiting for new videos. :)
    R

      I feel like I should know how to answer this question, but I'm afraid I don't. I do know, however, that strings are generally cheaper than buying a new bow. For good quality, inexpensive strings - try Kaplans?

    Hi! I play the cello for my school's orchestra team but I live in Asia. Do you know where to find one ? I am currently borrowing the cello from my school .My teacher suggested that we can get a decent one at around 800 USD (converted ), yet I haven't got the chance to stumble by a music shop and how do you know what kind of rosin to buy ? Thanks !

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly would not know much about instrument shops in your area. Once you find one, they might carry Larson rosin. That's the one that I use, and I like it very much!
