    My first bachelors was in agribusiness simply because I wanted something different than business administration. However, I graduated when the pandemic started in spring of 2020. I lost the opportunity to use my degree because of the lack of job prospects of using my degree. I also loved food and learning how things are made and what works well and what does not and how can we make deserts healthier. I have thought of animal nutrition or dairy science or pomology or cereal or grain science but have no experience in any field as I did not grow up on a farm or ranch. What would you suggest that i do?

    Thank you. I did my undergrad in chemical engineering but have no work experience in it.
    I have always been super interested in food and want to pursue a masters in food science.
    Btw your videos are super informative and have really helped me.

      That's a great choice! I have a friend I met in graduate school who did the same thing :) She had a bachelor's degree in microbiology and then got a master's degree in food microbiology!

    • @AbbeytheFoodScientist

      My biggest worry is that you might not have all the science prereq classes (organic chem, biochem, etc) to start a master's degree. I would look into the college's specific requirements near you to check!

    Thank you for the video. I'm a bachelor in Instrumentation and control engineering with a good GPA and lot of projects on biomedical field and I'm very much fascinated by food science. I don't see why not. You might actually have the advantageous of having a very unique background! Certain food science research projects might be well suited for you over a traditional food scientist. Rather than simply applying to the graduate program I would figure out what professors you're interested in doing research for and personally reach out to them. Once a professor wants you to work for them, they can help get you through the admissions process.

      In the US here's a breakdown: Bachelor's degree= four years, master's degree ~2 years, and PhD about~3-4 years!

    Hey can I do Masters in food science after a bachelors in nutrition & dietics? will the transition be easy?

    • @AbbeytheFoodScientist
      @AbbeytheFoodScientist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only thing I'd worry about is where I went to college (UW-Madison) the dietetics major didn't have all the science prerequisites needed for food science. For example, two semesters o chem, biochem, 2 semesters physics, etc. Some of these classes might be required for applying to a food science grad school but I'm not certain.

      I'm about to start a food science program and my bachelor's degree is in political science and law with a minor in development studies. I also have a JD and will likely go into food regulatory work, so that might impact how I got in. Many masters programs will take the approach that it is your time and money to waste if you can't keep up. I would recommend figuring out which area of food science you would like to work in and find the program that matches it. E.g. Cornell has a big dairy program, Texas A&M does beef, Michigan State does food defense. All of these schools have full programs, so you're not locked into a specialty but you have a focus if that is important to you. After that, find the coordinator for each program and send them an email laying out your academic and/or work experience and ask if it would be a good match for the school. They might say it is fine or suggest a way to get a conditional acceptance if you complete certain courses first. I was admitted while being very clear about my lack of college-level science courses and have spent the summer teaching myself organic chem and starting biochem. I don't recall seeing physics prerequisites in the programs I was interested in, but it might be elsewhere.

      Also, my program advisor got a PhD in food science with a BA in film. He did a post bac program in between to get the prerequisites.

Please introduce me to related certificates like HACCP, GMPs, etc,? and where can I get them?

    • @AbbeytheFoodScientist
      @AbbeytheFoodScientist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best piece of advice I got for writing a personal statement was to write sentences that no one else can write. Basically, what is unique about you or what is something the reader will remember you by. I also hated writing my personal statement but we all have to do it :) Just try to show how you would be an asset and try to be memorable.
