A Dream of flight - Exploring the Gorge, River Coe, Glencoe - 4K AVATA - 22nd June 2024

  • Every once in a while we get an opportunity, to explore something new, to do something different, or to go somewhere new and untouched, for a drone flyer the River Coe Gorge in Glencoe is one of those places...
    The river cascades down into Glencoe from high above, most people only see it on either side of the tight space of the mountain pass - apart that is from the popular 'Meeting of 3 waters' waterfall just off the A82 road, with its busy parking spot for visitors to stop, gawk and photograph themselves with the falls...
    Yet, just beneath the car park the road passes through a tight gorge, with the river running to one side and below it. On a past trip to Glencoe, I spotted the river gorge and I thought to myself that it would be good to explore it by drone - but at that time I didn't have anything suitable or capable of getting in close, so I had to content myself with a higher level view, away from the obstacles and also from the beauty within the gorge itself.
    This time we came prepared, with our AVATA and a fair bit of practice under my belt I was ready to explore the gorge - whether I would be successful, or even get the drone back was open for debate - to lose signal in such a tight space with trees above would perhaps have spelled disaster, but faint heart never won the day!
    So with heart in mouth and a well-prepared and positioned spotter - thanks hubby - I sent it out to try and capture the River Coe gorge from near the waterfall; to my amazement, the view was even more awesome than I could ever have anticipated and the footage perhaps some of my best yet captured...
    The footage was captured on a single flight down the gorge and back up, there was no pre-recording exploration, just the single moment of flying and discovery. It is all run at normal speed and frame rate - 60fps - apart from the trip back up the Gorge, which is run at 50% - and the main waterfall at 25% speed...
    Anyhows, I hope you enjoy exploring the River Coe Gorge with me via our AVATA...

      Thanks Mickey Moo, I was using the MC, which makes smooth flying easy - plus years of playing flight simuation games may have added something to my motor controls...

    Just wow! Did you say you flew from the waterfall in the opening scene? If so that’s some incredible range/penetration of the radio signal. I had figured you were perched up above on the cliff or something.

    • @albiondrones
      @albiondrones  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks... I was on the side of the road at the viewing platform, stood up leaning against the very secure rail, which puts me about 20' above and 25' off to the side of the gorge, but it seemed to work - you can see me at 14 sec, in the bottom left corner...
      Flying down I took it steady - watching the signal strength, but coming back I knew the signal was ok so gunned it a bit, which is why I was able to slow it to 50% speed and get some more water action... I have another edit that is at normal speed - th-cam.com/video/i4nmnf76zW8/w-d-xo.html

    Wonderfull!! Really enjoyable. Keep them coming. Loved the waterfall.
    How do you decide which drone to use? I am guessing wind and distance to cover would play a part as well as tightness of space. But could the mini3 pro and air 3 been used in this case as well. Just curious.

    • @albiondrones
      @albiondrones  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you...
      I had flown Glencoe before and spotted the gorge from above while flying the MINI, but without knowing how tight it got I was loathe to risk getting in there, watching on the screen is a little less immersive than in the goggles, so the AVATA was ideal - plus if I had brushed a tree it had a much better chance of staying in the air rather than a camera drone with exposed props...
      Yes, you could fly it with any drone, but if something goes wrong, you stand to lose the drone, and given I had the AVATA with me, it was a no-brainer and I felt much more confident flying it in that space than I would have with another drone...
      As to other choices, it all depends on what I am flying... If I need to get in closer or over / near people then the MINI3 Pro is perfectly suited - see the Manchester Reflections video - if the landscape is open and no close people or the wind is more extreme - or I need to fly a little further and still maintain VLOS - then the AIR3 is perfect...

    What where is this gorge?

    • @albiondrones
      @albiondrones  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The River Coe, in Glencoe, Scotland... Gencoe is a really popular place with walkers, climbers and sightseers, but the gorge is a hidden gem that I haven't seen filmed before...
