Surprisingly you can add beans to smoothies and they add protein and help make them creamy. Rice pudding is also nice with your frozen or freeze dried fruit.
Burrito bowls! So easy and so customizable to each person’s taste. It’s rice, beans, salsa, sour cream, olives, avocado, hot sauce, whatever really you want to top it with. It can be as simple or complex as you want to make. Also super filling and you can feed a crowd super cheap. I also make bean and cheese quesadillas pretty regularly. Flour tortillas are refried beans are not super hard to make and you can top with sour cream and salsa. So good! Also love bean soups and there’s lots of recipes online. Good luck 👍
Re: ideas to use Beans and Rice... White chicken chili uses a larger amount canellini (or any white beans beans) as a thickener for the dish. Mexican Piccadilly is great served over rice. Of course the old standby of chicken casserole. Taco casserole uses both black and red beans. Pasta De Fagioli uses Cannellini beans (or great northern beans). Refried beans uses pinto beans or black beans or a combo to use with all the Mexican dishes. We also use Spanish rice, in addition to refried beans, when we make our burritos in bulk and freeze. Taco soup uses both red beans and black beans. Chili con carne uses small red beans. Mexican Slow Cooker Beans, Green Chile and Beef over Rice uses pinto beans. We add a layer of pinto beans to our Cowboy Lasagne/casserole. We also use pinto beans in our vegetable soup. We make lots of chicken and rice soup when cold and flu season rolls around. Of course we use red beans, black beans, or pinto beans in tamales. Broccoli and rice casserole.
Great video We have decided to try the pantry challenge just for the month of January. It will be our first one and i am kind of excited to see how we fare. Thank you for your tips and tricks
North Carolina, USA - soft drink for carbonated beverages. For dish soap, just add water when you finish about half a bottle . We are fortunate in NC because we simply plant lettuce and other greens late in the Fall for harvesting throughout Winter. It's only in the 40's here now but will get cold so we add row covers to keep them going strong on chillier days (though lettuce may eventually fail.) We can grow Kale, Collards and Chard without row covers. And, we will harvest beets and carrots throughout the Winter under row covers. I like the idea of Microgreens in case our greens run out . I'm a non commenter typically but always watch your videos.
Burrito bowls. Make them how you like but I make them with rice at the bottom, black beans next, some corn, tomatoes or pico, chicken, grated cheese and salsa. I make them as lunches and cook for the week. I also sometimes add olives just cause. For lunches I put them in microwaveable bowls and nuke for 2/3 minutes stirring half way. Enjoy.
"Pop" for frizzy drinks here in the US is a reginal word, many use pop, soda, coke (this is for all drinks and we use the color) or just the name of the brand. Where I grew up in Atlanta, GA we called all fizzy drinks Coke lol, but when I moved north to KY they call it pop.
Beans can be used to pad meat dishes, either in cooked or freeze dried form. Pinto beans can be freeze dried and reconstituted to make refried beans. Rice can be substituted for potatoes. They don't have to be used together.
In Texas we call all “fizzy” drinks coke. Even if it’s not Coca Cola. I’m doing micro greens also during the pantry challenge. Good luck to you Chelsea.
I noticed a lot of people who store beans, can them so they are more convenient to throw them in meals and have them as side dishes. Having beans in jars, take the planning out of the prep/soaking.
One of our favorites; 1lb ground beef/venison, 1pnt green beans, and 2 cups rice (before cooking) mix it together and soy sauce. You'll obviously need to adjust amounts, but that's the base ratio. It's tasty, filling and super easy.
In Australia we call fizzy drinks soft drinks. With the rice just make rice pudding, put about 1 1/2 cups of rice in a casserole dish add sugar and vanilla essence to taste, about 1 to 1 1/2 litres of milk, stir, sprinkle with nutmeg with dobs of butter. Cook in oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 11/2 hrs. Milk needs to be just a little runny or it will end up dry when cooked. Serve with double cream or ice cream. Stir fry with rice, apricot chicken with rice, fried rice, chilli con carn with rice. Beans you can just add to soups and casserole’s. 😊
Soda Stream: Have been using SS for over 2 years. Love it. Notes--Only carbonate plain cold water. Add flavors/syrups after you carbonate. Look into adapter for larger air tanks. ❤❤Love the channel. 😊
Here in Ohio we call it "pop" also! Other states usually say soda. Some places in the south they just say coke for everything, but it's definitely POP here in Ohio!
I ran into that in Dallas. I tried to order a pizza delivery and was flabbergasted when they asked me what kind of Coke I wanted. I don’t drink Coke, I’m an avid Pepsi drinker. 😂
I'm starting in March to get ready for canning season and rotation. I had a bad year in 2023 with 10 surgeries and now i have to organize my pantry room and freezers. Your's looks awesome. Thank You for sharing ❤❤❤
I'm excited to see the difference in the pantry before and after. My pantry doesn't look nearly as nice as yours but we are a family of 2. Thank you for sharing.
One of my kuri squash began to rot too. So far no rot on the others. I did bean sprouts before Xmas for the first time because we can't buy good ones here. They were awesome just grown from Bulk Barn (Canada only) mung beans on jute, rinsed twice a day and kept in the dark. It was so easy, sprouts were crispy and store well. I'll be doing it again!
Bean burgers, just puree season and bind. Substitute or in addition to chicken or pork in burritos tacos or soup ;) also good with curried flavors in rice, you can use lentils as an alternative to meat in stuffing, you could also see if you can use them as a substitute in baked.goods . Salad toppers . Good luck on your challenge!
Here's a recipe for you, Red beans, rice and smoked sausage or you can use chunks of ham. Make enough for your family and leftovers. Use veggie broth or bone stock . Make homemade biscuits or cornbread to go with it. Enjoy! Love & Hugs Laurie
As a kid we used to have rice for breakfast. Cook it up as normal then we would add milk, honey(or sugar), and butter. Super yummy and stayed with you. We also call it Pop. ;)
Thin the dish soap out with water and use a pump bottle (or even better, a foaming pump bottle). You will use WAY less dish soap. I reuse my foaming hand soap pump bottle top with a glass mason jar by cutting a plastic mason jar lid to fit the pump neck. It lasts for years.
I am a first timer for the challenge and it has been going well despite the challenges we have faced all of December. My husband was in and out of ERs and then an almost two week stay in the hospital. Just got him home yesterday. I have a very, very well stocked home grocery store and freezers are filled. I will have to go to the grocery store weekly for milk, eggs, fresh produce and the sandwich bread that my family will eat for sandwiches only. We don't have a farm so dairy and some fresh produce is just what it has to be as far as "my rules". Otherwise, we will do our very best to just use what we have for two months.
It's pop in Minnesota too! Anywhere that gets frigid weather typically calls it pop after learning the hard way NOT to leave cans in the car or garage in winter😂
I think a skill to add is tortilla/ flat bread of any ethnicity. They are so quick and easy and something to make that would be a fun family assembly line. Quick to do fresh but they can be frozen. And you can use any carb...I love squashes. One of those once you do it you can't believe you haven't earlier. Plus they are so good. A 3 person assembly line and a tortilla press can give you stacks of flat bread and then from that home made chips of any flavor.
We love having canned meat on hand too. We are off grid, so we only have a tiny freezer and we rely heavily on canning to store a lot of our foods. I find having dry beans for storage is great, but I can up a batch to keep on the shelf so they are quick to grab and use without any planning. I'm looking forward to seeing what creative ways you use them. I need new ideas for sure! Squeeze bottles for the mayo! That is brilliant!!! Keeps people from putting dirty knives into the jar too.
It’s always been “pop” here in Minnesota, but “soda” or “soft drink” is creeping in with more transplants to our state. Again, you have such a great storage setup!!!
I’ve noticed midwestern people say pop or soda pop. I say soda. In the soda stream if you decide to buy it get an adapter so you can use the larger CO2 bottles usually used on paintball guns. Much cheaper!!
Also, making rice pudding for breakfast with some of your freeze dried fruit would be delicious. We always put cinnamon, sugar, and milk in ours growing up.
UK here, we call it POP and when I was a child we used have (I think it Corana) pop delivered to the door in glass bottles like milk. For me it always when you in Canada and USA talk about Cider when talking about apple juice as Cider in the UK is a alcoholic drink rather then just juice.
Hi I'm In UK too It was corona pop All different We used to live right by a corona yard So we used to pop in and buy it Allso iff u took the bottles back u got ur refund on the bottles
You can keep the soil moist for your microgreens by stacking your trays during germination - typically through day 3 of the grow. This will save the need to get more domes.
This is going to be a really interesting challenge! I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes. One recommendation (take it or leave it) is to reserve a couple of treats for later in the challenge. It can be so good for morale to have a bag of chips when you’re pantry is getting low.
Love it! I can't wait to see all the recipes you make. My mom has a unique recipe for our version of "Spanish Rice", she doesn't do spicy at all... so it's not spicy. Take a pound of ground beef and cook it up in the skillet with cumin, salt, pepper, and whatever taco like seasonings you have, set it aside. Remove excess grease, and place in chopped up bell peppers and an onion, doesn't matter what kind. Then add in cooked white rice, like you would a stir fry. Finally, add in some tomato sauce, and season to taste. If you'd like more flavor, I like to add a little garlic and a jalapeno. We've also made this with venison and it turned out wonderful! It's simple, but tasty! You can also add any other veggies you like, my mom likes to add salsa to it instead of the peppers, onions and tomato paste, but I like the fresher ingredients personally, even if they're frozen, it should turn out scrumptious! Good luck with the challenge, we're all routing for you!
Hello from Toronto. A great way to use your beans and squash is to make a hearty winter soup. Any combination of soaked beans. Sauté onions, garlic, carrots. Add large chunks of squash that could be easily mashed when soft. Add broth and beans and simmer until finished. Option to add any meat. Add salt and pepper to taste. The squash will add a great flavour and thickness. Very filling and warming.
Sorry for the additional comment, but what most people don’t realize is that store mayo isn’t nearly as perishable as homemade mayo. It’s made so it’s safe to keep out unrefrigerated for much longer times. AND… I use garbage bags instead of lids for my germination in my greenhouse trays. Not as brittle as the plastic lids, and I do so many trays. I just made inexpensive wire cages, if needed to keep the plastic off the soil and seeds. I also take them off as soon as I see any germination 😊
I grew up in NYC and we said soda for our fizzy drinks. When I moved south and around the Bible Belt most said pop. Now I live in the Pacific Northwest and it seems to be a mix.
In southern New England we called it soda, but my relatives up in Maine & New Hampshire called it tonic. I didn't hear the term pop until I moved to Ohio.
I live in NW Iowa smack dab in the middle of the USA, and we call it POP. I've never tried ketchup chips, you don't even see them around here much, but I squirt some ketchup on a plate and dip plain potato chips in it. We've been unusually warm here too, but in about a week we are supposed to have 7 degrees F for daily highs.
Making a humus but just with a mix of different beans is delicious and is a great side for rice bowls or just as a dip :) Also using beans for cakes is perfect. Black bean brownies and chickpea blondies (you can also use white beans). As a former high school teacher I can attest that teenagers love them ;)
I make pinto beans with ham and seasoned with montreal steak seasoning, soo good. It can be served over rice with cheese. A good tortilla recipe is on Views on the road but you will probably need to moderate the heat on some of her recipes. Her Mexican recipes are authentic and delicious.
Have you tried radishes with a roast or chicken? You actually cook them with the meat. Just like potatoes and carrots. This idea came from Jamerrill Stewart. After the radishes are cooked. There is no heat.
In northeast South Dakota we also use the term "pop". But other places use the term "soda". And some other countries use the term "pepsi" which I found interesting since we here have the brand Pepsi.
Saving shampoo- wash hair twice, first time with 1/4 the usual amount of shampoo, then again with another 1/4. It will come out just as clean but use half the shampoo. Conditioner- diy apple cider vinegar. its almost free if you make it yourself. yes you smell 'odd' at first but it goes away soon enough, leaves hair super soft, and did I mention its almost free? haha Laundry deterg- diy horse chestnut soap. works really well esp if you dont like the perfumes of commercial deterg Love all your videos, happy challenge!
Chicken biryani is great for using up white rice, as is Spanish rice. If you have Arborio rice to use up you can make a big pot of risotto and use the leftovers to fry arancini. Waste not want not 🖤
Hi Chelsea, I am also doing the pantry challenge January and hopefully February with a small budget of £20 for fresh produce or eggs. The only thing I might suggest you get is Castile soap that way of you run out of washing up liquid or shampoo you can use Castile soap with/without essential oils. Coconut oil can be used as conditioner and makes a lovely hair mask you can even add in a little honey if you have some to spare. If you and the girls wanted to honey makes a gorgeous face mask.
Loved this video and the freezer organization one as well. Good luck on the challenge! Here is my Mexican American mom's recipe for rice that is always a crowd pleaser. Since you said you have lots of tomato products, I hope it is a good fit, and I'd love to hear if you use it. INGREDIENTS 2 cups white rice 30ish oz tomato sauce 2 tsp garlic salt Olive oil Optional: frozen carrots, peas, chilis/chili powder to taste STEPS In a large saucepan, coat the bottom with olive oil. Once oil is heated, pour the rice in. Stir occasionally. Once the rice has turned from opaque to translucent, pour in the tomato sauce. Rinse the sauce cans/jars with a little water (1-2 oz) and add that too. Sprinkle in seasonings and veggies. Stir briefly, then put the lid on. Simmer on medium low. My mom simmers for 20-25 minutes but it always takes mine 40-45 so that may depend on the pan. Happy new year and good luck with your pantry challenge!
Northern MN we call it pop also. Thank you for this video. I’m considering doing the pantry challenge next year and so I am planning my garden accordingly.
Awww that was such a sweet moment. ❤️anyways, great challenge you are doing, hubby and I usually go grocery shopping every two months but it is just the two of us. Holy cow, you are taking on a great task, good for you. I know you will do just fine. Looking forward to following along. I always follow Jessica too during Jan and feb. Great video friend, 🇨🇦🌷
In the Pacific Northwest of Washington State, we always referred to soda pop as "pop". Friends of mine from the Eastern U.S. states laugh at me, too, when I use the word "pop" when referring to certain carbonated beverages. Oh, I just recalled my parents used the term "pop", and they're from Spokane and Cheney Washington (Eastern side of Washington State.)
I dilute dish soaps and laundry soaps. Mist if them are highly concentrated and we use way to much. I save an empty bottle and dilute to 1/2 strength or even 1/3 for dish soap. I find the soaps bubble up easier if diluted.
You have my admiration. It is only my husband and myself. I love to cook big. Recently got a freeze dryer. Make enough for dinner and maybe lunch the next day then freeze dry what is left. Your food storage is amazing. I’m also doing the pantry challange but don’t know if it will be for a month or 2.
As for microgreens... just skip the soil. It is so much cleaner! I grow everything inside in hydroponics, including microgreens... no soil in my house anymore. Just use a layer of paper towel or microgreens paper inside your tray instead of soil.
I always enjoy your videos, but I gotta comment on how adorable it was when Dan came in and kissed your temple!😘😍💗💞
I love when my hubby does that. 😊
I thought that was adorable.
best part. so sweet
In Minnesota we grew up saying “pop”, too!

Mexican Piccadilly is great served over rice. Of course the old standby of chicken casserole. Taco casserole uses both black and red beans. I live in Alabama and we call all flavors/variety of sodas "Coke".

Yes in Australia, we call fizzy, non alcoholic drinks, soft drinks.

Hi Chelsea!! Your storage of food blows my mind. You have my respect. So much work and dedication. BTW, in Pennsylvania we say “pop”! 😂
You must be out west ❤ I grew up outside of Philly and it's all soda there. When I lived in east Pittsburgh it was all pop.
Same here in Colorado😄
When I make a berry pie it’s usually very runny with juice. I found out that you can use tapioca for a thickener.

Making a humus but just with a mix of different beans is delicious and is a great side for rice bowls or just as a dip :) Also using beans for cakes is perfect. Black bean brownies and chickpea blondies (you can also use white beans). As a former high school teacher I can attest that teenagers love them ;)
I was born and raised in Michigan, and we call it pop. Since we moved to North Carolina, we call it soda.
I’m in Cardiff, Wales 🏴 we call it pop.
Really
A must try for me
I hate radish as it is so deffo try the one
In North Dakota USA we call it pop because if you leave it outside in the winter it pops.
In northeast South Dakota we also use the term "pop". But other places use the term "soda". And some other countries use the term "pepsi" which I found interesting since we here have the brand Pepsi.
I love making my own instant rice! Also use dehydrated lemon and orange slices to water for drinking
Saving shampoo- wash hair twice, first time with 1/4 the usual amount of shampoo, then again with another 1/4. It will come out just as clean but use half the shampoo.
Conditioner- diy apple cider vinegar. its almost free if you make it yourself. yes you smell 'odd' at first but it goes away soon enough, leaves hair super soft, and did I mention its almost free? haha
Laundry deterg- diy horse chestnut soap. works really well esp if you dont like the perfumes of commercial deterg
Love all your videos, happy challenge!
Chicken biryani is great for using up white rice, as is Spanish rice. If you have Arborio rice to use up you can make a big pot of risotto and use the leftovers to fry arancini. Waste not want not 🖤
In the uk any carbonated drink such as coke, pepsi etc is called a fizzy drink
Hi Chelsea, I am also doing the pantry challenge January and hopefully February with a small budget of £20 for fresh produce or eggs. The only thing I might suggest you get is Castile soap that way of you run out of washing up liquid or shampoo you can use Castile soap with/without essential oils. Coconut oil can be used as conditioner and makes a lovely hair mask you can even add in a little honey if you have some to spare. If you and the girls wanted to honey makes a gorgeous face mask.
Have you tried toasting the chick peas as a snack.
I have also made tortillas from black beans.
Loved this video and the freezer organization one as well. Good luck on the challenge! Here is my Mexican American mom's recipe for rice that is always a crowd pleaser. Since you said you have lots of tomato products, I hope it is a good fit, and I'd love to hear if you use it.
INGREDIENTS
2 cups white rice
30ish oz tomato sauce
2 tsp garlic salt
Olive oil
Optional: frozen carrots, peas, chilis/chili powder to taste
STEPS
In a large saucepan, coat the bottom with olive oil.
We grew up with the occasional treat of soft drinks, most in my area call it soda, and some pop (northeastern Maine).
I love my zevia (cola is my favorite) and would struggle without it. So I completely understand how Dan is feeling.😊
HiChelsea, I’m Cajun French from Southwest Louisiana and we also call it pop.
I've used laundry soap in a pinch for dish soap.
defiantly a soda stream I resisted for so long but I love it ! No waste
We call the fizzy drinks, Pop in the UK where I was raised, in Australia we call it Soft Drinks
Pam here… in WI it is a mix of calling it pop and soda In upper Michigan more pop and down by Milwaukee more soda.
We in Oz call fizzy sugared drinks soft drinks. And soda for us is soda water with no sugars or flavours.
Northern MN we call it pop also. Thank you for this video. I’m considering doing the pantry challenge next year and so I am planning my garden accordingly.
Lived in Brainerd and Aitken MN…. Pop!
@@krisirolfe4332 I live in Hibbing.
I'm in Minnesota-USA. It's POP here too!
Pop in Ohio Love watching your videos. God Bless
Yes!!!! We Minnesotans call it "pop" also!!! We also have ketchup chips which are so yummy! Great pantry tour.
I’m a Mn. Also but what are ketchup chips?
In the part of scotland that I am from we call it Juice, fizzy juice and squash both get called Juice.
I dilute my dish soap and hand soup so I get twice as much.
So you could do that however much you want to make it stretch
I dilute dish soaps and laundry soaps. Mist if them are highly concentrated and we use way to much. I save an empty bottle and dilute to 1/2 strength or even 1/3 for dish soap. I find the soaps bubble up easier if diluted.
You have my admiration. It is only my husband and myself. I love to cook big. Recently got a freeze dryer. Make enough for dinner and maybe lunch the next day then freeze dry what is left. Your food storage is amazing. I’m also doing the pantry challange but don’t know if it will be for a month or 2.
The meat in your freezer, i would can. Then it will always be convenient. Restock freezer when meat on sale. Thanks for video.
We call it "pop" in Chicago! And I just got 2 Sodastreams a few months ago finally. One for home, one for work. It is a game changer!!! Do it!
As for microgreens... just skip the soil. It is so much cleaner! I grow everything inside in hydroponics, including microgreens... no soil in my house anymore. Just use a layer of paper towel or microgreens paper inside your tray instead of soil.
Great prep for the challenge ! So interested to see how it goes over the next 2 months 😊
In Australia we call pop “soft drink”.
