In this video I make a simple no-sew Journal Cover from junk and scraps which I paint a design on. Supplies used are listed further below.

Supplies used:
Basic cover construction:
Cardboard box
Brown packaging paper
Glue
Ruler
Scissors
Glue brush / Paint brush
Elastic (can substitute this with twine, embroidery thread, yarn, string etc)
Masking tape (not essential and could substitute washiest tape or paper)
Decoration:
Paints (can use any paints or substitute collage material) - see further info below
Winsor & Newton Calligraphy Ink - Sepia
Sharpie Paint Pen
Fine line marker
Stazon Ink - Black
Dovecraft Alphabet Stamps

Thank you Robynn - that made me smile. I just knew that if I didn't do something to the cover then it would bug me. I think it was just too bright and shiny and I needed a bit of grunge :D
Love the creativity coming out with the recycled packaging- intrigued by the bag handles as closures.

Great size for my mums old university paper keepsakes. Damce programs, valentines, etc from the early 1900's. Thank you.

@@KylieCooStudio yes my Mum kept greeting cards for over 65 years of marriage. I am incorporating them into Junk journals and repurposed books with photos and ephemera from her life in 20's through 40's before children. I love your ideas ans how ypu show the steps and process. Thanks.

Received a heavy fold out envelope (junk mail) and put two layers of gesso on last night. Will also use the contents as the pages. I always learn or am inspired by your ideas and art. Great kickoff for a new year.

@@KylieCooStudio I re-watched your video this morning since it was very late at night the first time I saw it. As I watch you add the black to your painting - I am encouraged to be more bold and experiment a little - to create layers and see what happens. This elastic binding appeals to me. I presume that using a very sturdy cardboard - as you did - would be important for this so that it doesn't pull into the cover - is that right? I would definitely like to try this closure, too. Also - I'd like to learn how to set eyelets. I find that creating is a wonderful way to care for myself in stressful times - and also have something made with love to give to others. I'm a recent subscriber and just thought I'd say I really like that you are versatile. You seem to start with a general plan and just let go and create whatever happens. Sometimes I get too caught up in doing something like someone else did because I think my way is wrong when in fact its not really wrong just different. I feel like you give us the permission to just let go and fly...thank you!

If I had left all the film in you would have seen that my initial plans for decorating the journal were quite different - but when I was sitting there I really wanted to paint and so that's what I did. There are no wrong ways and all I try and do is to show the way I do things ... I would always encourage people to do things their way or the way they want to try it - just let go and fly (I like that a lot). Best wishes to you - the main thing is to enjoy the process of creating :)

I'd already watched Nina's video and I wasn't sure how I wanted to do it. Your mention of gift bags reminded me that I have two that came with something I ordered. They are heavily branded, but with a bit of gesso and some creativity they'll be fine!

Stunning cover. I know it took you lot of time to colour it but it was clearly worth it. I love how you grunged it with the ink. I would have loved a few small but darker blob also. Thank you for sharing. 😊
I have one question - What is the thickness of the elastic you use?
Hi Pooja - thanks for your kind comment. I'm sorry but I don't know the thickness of the elastic. I don't have the original packaging any more and I've looked online to see if I could find it but it doesn't give the thickness in the description. If I do come across it then I will certainly let you know. :)

I love this, though I stenciled my brown paper cover. Wondering if you used matte gel medium or similar over the paint to seal it? I used some metallic paints and worry that sealing it might knock back the shimmer.

Many thanks Victoria. I haven't sealed this at all. I think if I was going to then I would use a gloss medium. I might do a little test and will show it in a future video :)

Hi Penny - I'm so pleased you've gained inspiration from my videos thank you for letting me know. The term 'trash to treasure' is really quite generic so you should not be concerned about using it. I've done a couple of series called 'Junk! Use it or lose it' so that became more my saying though I think it's been picked-up elsewhere as Use it or lose it. Anyway, have fun making your trash into treasure. I'll try and pop by to see you

What is the name of the kind of pen that made the small white dots
Hi Marilyn - it was a Sharpie paint pen with a medium nib. Hope that helps :)
