    I love how Kati mentioned how helicopter parenting can be as damaging as neglectful parenting. Helicopter parents raise children who are fearful of the world and spend the rest of their lives learning to do things on their own and make their own decisions, valuable skills they should have already been allowed the freedom to learn as a child. Allowing children and teenagers to make their own mistakes and learn from them is so important for their development in my opinion.

      Ok here is my advice for dodging overly involved/codependent parents. Limit the communication to what you know they can handle- adapt the truth from: I’m dating this girl, we’re emotionally involved but taking it slow physically but we’re doing dating for now to :: me and friends’ name are together in this geographic region doing these safe things, here is how you can contact me, here is the time you will see me again, I’m on my way back at this time- here is my mode of transit and eta. ❤ The knowledge they won’t respect your boundaries with the emotional side of your life and not try to interfere /question your boundaries with anger means you have to reenforce it for yourself from within. Find support in other relationships (aunts and uncles, parents of friends, but be discerning, older means experienced not mature).

      I too would like to see that, but Theo is a character, literally. A therapist cannot analyze someone in character. All of Theo’s podcasts and comedy (although very funny) is a carefully crafted character and not who who truly is. I think only the people he chooses to spend his time with in his private life know what he’s actually like.

    Wow I literally teared up… this episode was much needed. Esther and I have a very similar upbringing where I too was always alone in my room, played by myself, and didn’t have the intimate relationship of a mother/daughter bond. This explains a lot of as to why I prefer to be by myself…

    Annie’s advice about texting yourself everything you want to text an ex.. this is everything. In my situation, less of a breakup -my partner died so everyday I message a disconnected phone line how much I love and miss him, all the fantastic things about him and romantic last words we couldn’t share with an impossibility of ever getting that love back. But I know for certain he’d want me to love myself that hard and would give me that love if he could. But still I am not receiving it. So going to try and direct those messages to myself to everytime I am messaging him.

    Oh Esther no wonder I feel so close to your mom. My mom is a Finn too. They are very matter of fact people. Most things are not worth much outward emotion. You handle the situation then after you can handle your emotions. Usually alone behind closed doors because you just don’t put your shit on others. But they are very funny and loving.

  • @497chris
    @497chris ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This pod is super helpful for me and my "mom" issues. My parents were physically "present" as well as abusive growing up, but especially emotionally "unavailable". Putting me in therapy was their way of "dealing with me", without having to. And I eventually chose drugs instead to deal with my emotions. But as an adult I realized I get to make my own choices, got away from my parents. And have been clean (opiates), for going on 11 years. And still in therapy lol, but its my choice this time! ❤️

    This was my absolute favourite podcast and I really do love each of the hosts. But I’m bouncing off so many episodes currently with the therapy guests. Maybe it’s useful to some people I don’t know, but for me it’s not particularly insightful and a bit of a chore to get through. There’s been moments when each of them, especially Annie, have dropped some incredible wisdom in episodes, in between being hilarious. That’s seems to be really missing now, and it feels like just another one of a thousand quasi self help podcasts. Not sure if it’s bad, or just my tastes, but feels so stale compared to episodes I absolutely fell in love with where you could be laughing hard, shocked or sometimes shedding a tear and a heartfelt moment.

    • @hemmefatale1
      @hemmefatale1 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I meant but maybe didn't convey, was not so much that I just want jokes, and no serious talk or subjects covered, that's obviously one of the podcasts strengths. I just find the shift and direction off. Almost like the show kind of bedding down into just another self help pod. At the start it was brilliantly chaotic, not just in terms of being funny, but some refreshing and quite raw emotions. Maybe this is the show maturing and it works great for others. Ultimately, I'm a guy, and it's one of very few podcasts I watch with my wife. In a low-key way it's nice to have shared laughs and encouraged discussion about sex etc in our own relationship. But it just doesn't seem to do that now. But that's just my response. Not saying it's objectively worse or wanting to diminish anyone else's enjoyment.

    I loved this episode so much! I really did not expect to relate so much to a lot of the topics, and I think I gained a lot of insight towards my own childhood trauma. I would def love to see more videos like this in the future. One suggestion I have is that you guys talk a lot about your sexual trauma-- which as a 20 yr old female who has been through my own share very recently-- I would love to see an episode where you guys talk with Kati about aspects of it, how to heal, and how you all have overcome your struggles with it (ofc only sharing as much as you're comfortable with). Love this podcast! It's great to see successful, funny women spreading love and kindness towards each other in a world where you don't often see that.

      There's a general rule out there when it comes to sibling hierarchy that a significant age gap between siblings, I believe it's 6 years, means that that child born will most likely have a lot of personality traits of an only child. The theory behind that is that you don't grow up with your sibling(s) that are 6 plus years older than you. I would have to find the literature about it to get exact numbers and info but that's the basics. My mother was really into sibling order traits and I vaguely remember reading about it in my college psychology class. Esther's behavior is typical of someone who has a significantly older sibling and no other siblings near her age. She essentially grew up by herself with her parents.

      This is wrong me and my sister are 7 years apart and very close the difference is her sister didn’t want her prob wanted to keep being an only child and didn’t include her. My sister wanted me so bad she took me to show and tell lol

      @Brianna Dash this is based on research and studies. There will always be outliers. It's more about what traits you have. You may be very close to your sister but still exhibit only child/first born characteristics because you never had to compete with another sibling.
