    This is "STEAMING THE TWIN TANGYE TYPE MODEL STEAM ENGINE IN THE GARDEN" The engine was rebuilt by myself a while back and I thought it a good idea to give it a steam test.

    Not just useful, but as a mechanic of gasoline and electric driven motors, highly entertaining and fascinating. Makes me want to get into steam engines.

    Ok, I work 7 days a week. Usually 10-12 hour days. But at night when I’m trying to get my mind off work, I watch your channel. Someday, if I don’t die before I can retire, I’m going to build a steam engine. It takes me back to my youth when hit miss engines were common place pumping water lines and water and oilfield pump jacks. A lot of folks don’t know this but hit miss engines could run off of natural gas blow off or the gas you often see burning 24-7 in oil fields.

    The editing you did at the end to magically mop up the oil dripping down from the crosshead slide way was sublime. Good job done there Keith!

    Very nice work. And yes, I did find it useful and interesting. Steam power has a poetry and beauty all it's own. Thanks from Washington State.

    Very nice! I had a Mamod as a boy. Combined with various Meccano bits it could drive a dynamo or be a steam-powered crane. Happy days. Best regards, Rob

    Always fun to apply live steam and see what you get. Engines that you think are perfected when running on compressed air often disappoint when they get a taste of real steam. Nice engine!

    If you're an trainbuff, its a firebox, but its the same as a fire holder, it holds fireable materials that can be used, like coal, charcoal, wood, or oil in some. Petrolleum is used in diesels.

    You mention running low pressure because it has brass cylinder bores. I see a potential issue with this. Low pressure steam in the boiler is very wet, meaning that you will get much more water in your cylinders, washing away the lubricant, probably causing even worse damage than high pressure would. I would run higher pressure in the boiler and set a lower pressure in the line to the engine with an in-line regulator, eliminating the excess moisture. I hope you find this helpful. Just trying to help out a fellow steam buff.

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it really doesn't work like that ...... wet steam & water both act as a lubricant too, neither will "wash away the oil" . . . . look at the little Mamod steam engines - they don't have a displacement lubricator but they seem to work OK ....... }:-))) I think that I mention not using very hot superheated steam (as in a radiant superheater) on Brass engines - it has little to do with the steam pressure.

    LOL I'm kidding very nice work, seems to run pretty good.

    Beautiful engine! What is this component that the right cylinder valve rod passes through, that the left cylinder doesn't have?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a water pump for feeding the boiler.

    I'm new to steam engines, but I have a rough idea about how they work in general, but one thing I was wondering about is if the steam input is constant or if it comes in bursts?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The steam pressure fluctuates but is in a constant steady supply relative to the heat applied to the water in the steam boiler.

  • @TemplarX2

    Is the direction of rotation dependent on the starting position or is there some mechanism to force it to revolve in one direction only?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TemplarX2 The direction of rotation is relative to the position of the slide valve eccentrics on the crankshaft.

    • @keithappleton

    "I need to keep the temperature low So I don't damage the brass cylinder bores." Is this true? What are the pistons made of? I run an engine that's not much bigger, a Twin 1902 Toledo Steam Carriage engine (cast iron), I've never heard the idea of the temperature of the steam to be a big deal as long as you have good steam/cylinder oil.

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brass engines & pistons will not stand high superheat - cast iron will - if you don't believe me - superheat a brass engine (with a proper superheater - not a simple steam drier) and see what happens . . . .

    • @cyberbadger
      @cyberbadger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting, so were brass piston/cylinders were not really used for working steam engines historically? Just for shiny models mostly?

    ornamental brass engine. is brass bad for steam engines? I thought that was good to buy/make them so they don't rust or something?

    • @keithappleton

      Brass does not wear well. Gunmetal would be a far better material to use.
