You should look at The Legend of Mordu short on the Brave DVD. It will give you more context in terms of Mordu's backstory. Also, can you react to the Descendants series? That was Disney's best work.

I've seen Brave about a dozen times and I never thought about one thing. The reason why her dad didn't believe her initially at the castle about her mom is because it was established in the first scene of the movie that he didn't believe in magic.
They showed that at the beginning when Merida was little. The wisps lead her to fate back to her parents.

Yeah I watched an interview where the actor says its his hometown dialect! He joked that other people in Scotland can have a hard time understanding it 😅
I am completely Scottish born and raised in Edinburgh until I moved to aus. But I went to uni in Aberdeen in the north of Scotland and it was like a whole other language. I lived with two girls from the area and needed subtitles for the first couple of months haha. So I’m not so embarrassed to say I understood most of what he says.

Mending the bond wasn't about the tapestry, it was the two women putting aside their pride to admit their mistakes. the queen did this when she told Merida she could break tradition so she can find love in her own time, and Merida completed this when she apologizes to her mother and admits that it was her fault for trying to change her mother. the tapestry may be a physical representation, but it was their relationship that needed mending.
Yes, I love that and was think about that while scrolling through the comments. Merida think that’s the bond is the torn tapestry but in reality, it was fixing their relationship. She’s so focused on her idea of what to do that neither of them even realize it. She does the same thing with the spell, she focuses on what she thinks it’s gonna do/has to do, when in reality, she needed to step back and look at the bigger picture, from a different POV, which is what her mom needed to do as well. They both just needed to pull back from their tunnel vision and pride of what they wished for and stop ignoring each other and understand and compromise with each other. The writing in this movie is really good but it’s gets so much hate for the dumbest reasons. Brave is an excellent movie and it’s writing and animation is great

Her trying to “change her mom” was a desperate last resort of her mother literally emotionally neglecting her daughter and making her entire life miserable by being a bad mother. I think she was well within her right to do anything within her power to take her life into her own hands because she literally had NO control over it. Ion know, wouldn’t call it “wrong”.
It was more about her changing her mom’s MIND about a specific thing rather than changing her as a person overall.
@@lilyraimey3499 You have to remember that she jeopardized the stability of her kingdom in doing what she did though. They were both in the wrong.
Merida and her mother both needed to learn how to find middle ground
When Mordu died, the oldest prince soul was free and it feels like he’s telling them “thank you” because for so long he was trapped in that monster as a bear, he’s no longer remember who he really was
I've heard that originally they had the will-o-the-wisp that he turned into join three others that were waiting for him and then they left together - the four brothers finally reunited.

I always liked this movie, but mostly because it surprised the hell out of me. When they were advertising Brave before release they leaned HEAVY into Merida not wanting to be a princess "I'll be shooting for my own hand" yada yada yada. Not a SINGLE mention about her mother getting turned into a bear. I don't even know if bears were shown in the ads. So I had a great time back in 2012 watching a movie that turned out to be a story about a mom and a daughter. Even if the mom was a bear for most of it lol.
That’s because during the development of the movie, Pixar had fired one of their original directors and hired a director that decided to take the movie in a whole different direction. It’s literally two movies that can’t seem to make up their mind in what it wants to be.

Brother bear is such a good movie
Because the pain is "overbearing" and in Brave her mother is "overbearing". Plus in some cultures like Native American, bears were seen as closely related to people. The way they protect their kids, the way the stand on two feet, eat meat and fruit/ vegetables, and are intelligent etc.
idk what people were on about. the dad was a great character; he was always supportive of Merida and what she wanted and although he wasn't always the most helpful, you could tell he loved his family and would die for them if it came to it. not sure how that paints men in a bad light but ok lol love you both and glad to see you back again with this wonderful commentary! 😃

I'll start by saying that I do like this movie, and I'd say that Merida is probably one of my favorite Disney princesses, but I do see where some people could take issue with the way men are depicted. Every (grown) man in this movie is depicted as some kind of combination of fat, stupid or otherwise unattractive and this is a trope that's been going on for decades. You don't really see the opposite happen anymore, women just aren't allowed to be ripped on while men are considered fair game. Someone like Kelly Bundy from Married With Children would never be written today without everyone involved being fired due to public outrage. While some people were no doubt just butt hurt losers looking for something to be upset about, I think plenty of people just don't like the double standard. You'll never make everyone happy but you have to have the same rules for everyone, either everyone's up for mockery or no one is.
@@SunwardRanger83 I think that a good argument here would be, that all of the men here are side characters, they are not complicated, developed characters, they are mainly plot devices, the two women, that are main characters look quite normal, fairly pretty and are complicated and deeply written, that’s why they are the realisticly portrayed ones, the only other woman(the maid) is also a caricature just like the men are, I think that the problem is that the average male audience is not used to being represented by simple side characters, but in most previous works a lot of the women were represented like that, I can think of many times in media, where women are shown just as mere accessories to men and the ugly ones are shunned by the main characters (men), in many cases, for example in Herge’s comics Tin-Tin, the main cahracters (all men) look very realistic and normal, some would even call them handsome, while all the side characters look funny or just unattractive(mainly the bad guys) and all the women are very stereotyped and are mostly viewed as unattractive and stupid… That is just one example, I’m sure I could bring up many others… But you know what? I still enjoy Tin-Tin and many predominantly male-centric works, I realize that people around me don’t look and act like that and I can enjoy the main character’s perspective and their struggles, I choose who I relate to, if there is no relatable woman, I relate to a man, as simple as that, I think that a lot of men should just get over their mysoginy and just try to relate to female characters if they don’t like the male ones… After all It’s just a one subjective piece of work, It’s not a societal study…
@@celestiacrystal9317 If you are only looking at this movie I'd tend to agree with you, but this is a trend that has been going on for a long time. Personally I'm not particularly concerned with "representation" so long as the characters are well written, and I'll laugh at the bumbling male trope (Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin and so on,) just like any normal person. What my point is is that there's a double standard and a lot of hypocrisy going on currently. We're told that anything less than perfection is unacceptable for a female character and that anything else is just terrible and damaging to women's mental health, yet then we're shown time after time where male characters are portrayed in a very poor light. If you can explain this phenomenon in any kind of positive light I'll listen, but I think that a lot of people think this isn't okay.
I do take issue with your assertion that " a lot of men should just get over their mysoginy," frankly I think you're being extremely insulting whether you intend to be or not. You're assuming that men in general are misogynistic and can't relate to women (not actually true,) rather than listening to guys who say that they feel like they're being mistreated. Personally, most of my favorite characters are female, and I'm getting kind of sick of the tired old line that guys just hate women in fiction. Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner have been a thing longer than I've been alive, and I grew up with Lara Croft and Mara Jade Skywalker, so popular female characters aren't exactly new or rare.
@@SunwardRanger83 Even tho I didn’t really express it in my comment, I agree with the fact that stereotyping anyone is wrong and representation matters even for men, but I would like to argue that the creators behind most of the shows and movies with characters like Homer or Peter Griffin are men, it is a harmful stereotype, but it was still pushed by men. Maybe you can ask why would men want to dumb themselves down and make themselves unattractive, that can also be explained by a little bit of sexism. Usually such male characters have a love interest way out of their league and they still score. It then sets a low bar for women and their chances with men irl. So yes, we would all like to see actual representation on screen and it should be the norm and I’m also not fond of the perfect female characters stereotype…
But also the female characters you mentioned, I don’t think that they have been portrayed realistically and without the male-gaze…
For example: Lara Croft, in the old games, her proportions were crazy and we all know it was not much of a female empowerment, I do love the new games tho and that Lara Croft, while still being very artificially attractive is I think an admirable character with her own story and ambitions, I also loved the new Tomb Raider movie with Allicia Vikander and liked how much it stayed true to the games, however I have never been able to watch the Angelina Jolie TR movies, the outfits the crazy unrealistic stunts, the love interests, it all seemed very sexualized and made for the male enjoyment and as an asexual that is very hard for me to watch…
And my mysoginy comment, while it may have sounded a little aggressive, it was meant as more of a blunt honest jab at some people and while you may not be one of them, trust me there are many men who feel or have felt like they can’t relate to female characters, just look at the haters of female-led games, most of the hate is just straight men being frustrated that they don’t want to play as a female and that it is no longer relatable for them, even tho they’re not forced into any romance or anything uncomfortable for them…
I saw this movie with my mom and really liked it. I remember when it first came out some conservative women (the holier-than-thou, anti-feminist, judgey as hell types) didn't like it because they claimed it was saying feminine things were bad. They wanted to know "why can't we have a princess who likes good, godly, feminine things?" and "why is Disney catering to these feminists who hate womanly values?", etc. Which I never understood. Elinor's problem wasn't that she was feminine- it was that she was overly controlling & not willing to hear her daughter out. And Merida's tomboy tendency to try to bulldoze through all her problems is what causes the main conflicts of the movies & have to be fixed later on. And while Merida does save the day in some ways with skills like archery & swordsmanship, which are coded as masculine, it's in her using her mother's "princess lessons" about civility, tact, and grace (plus a little ego-boosting where necessary) when dealing with the clans that stops their warring. And her willing to be vulnerable enough to admit her faults and that her mother was right about some things that helps mend their bond. And literally sewing was necessary to save Elinor- sewing! On horseback! At night in the middle of a raging storm! I'd say I don't know how they could think this movie hates femininity but I already know it's because of their very narrow and un-nuanced view of how a woman can be feminine.
Unrelated, I will also strive in the future to work the phrase "wacka-wacka, bitches" into casual conversation.
Yeah, the MC is a tomboy but does have feminine qualities. It’s also funny cuz Merida is attracted to the guys there, but she simply doesn’t want to marry young and have a choice on who she ended up with (apparently she was supposed to get with the blonde guy but I think they removed it to keep it more focused on the mom and daughter relationship, but we can still see the remnants of that which I also detected when watching).
My biggest issue is that the “feminine” princesses are also frequently shit upon by similar ppl and it’s annoying

It was literally about free will. How regardless of your outlook, or whether you’re more masculine or feminine, that women should have the freedom to choose their paths regardless, and be their respective individual selves.
Angus is definitely some type of draft horse, probably a Clydesdale since they’re from Scotland. Huge horses, they really are that big even if it looks like an exaggeration
A shire horse, actually. The coloring would be unusual for a Clydesdale, since those are almost always sabinos.

Honestly, even as an adult, I still sided with Merida when she tore the tapestry. Elinor was really reaching overbearing dictating mother territory. Kinda reminded me of King Triton from The Little Mermaid except in mother form. I mean maybe tearing the tapestry was a bit over the line but I was getting where she was coming from.
At the same time, Elinor is raising her daughter the way she was raised. The issues with elinor is not considering who Merida is as a person and instead focusing on the role her daughter must be so that she won’t have trouble in the future rather than preparing her to be the best version of herself. And of course, since she went thru that stuff and things turned out fine, she thinks that her daughter should do it as well without considering that things could go wrong or that the next generation doesn’t have to do what the parents did and that maybe they should be allowed to do what their parents couldn’t
But Elinor is not just a mother- she is also the Queen, and the future of their lands depends on Merida‘s marriage. Yes, she is controlling and comes across as harsh, but considering what‘s at stake, her behavior makes perfect sense to me. That doesn‘t mean it‘s good, but it is very much in line with her duties as a Queen.
Hmmm, a monarch acting overbearing and not considering the wishes of other "lesser" people. Never find any examples of that in the history books! LOL
@@samiraansari5686 agreed 100%. Asians seem to know more about responsibility while Western people care more about freedom but I'm still also happy about Merida can decide on who to marry now because forced marriages aren't valid
This movie always makes me cry. I think, people with complicated relationships with their mom will hard core relate to this. Sometimes it's hard to listen to one another. Mother and daughter relationships can be HARD. I truly love this movie!

You’re 100% right. I’ve always had a rocky relationship with my mum and seeing this movie for the first time with her made us both cry like babies. Ironically this movie brought us closer together, sure we have our moments but I’ll always love her and her with me.
This movie is underrated. One of my favorites. Also if you guys see this, would you mind adding Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to your list? It's another underrated animated film in my opinion.

The backlash wasn't because it was directed by a man, but due to some directional differences where one female director was fired and replaced by a male director who decided to take the movie in a 180 degree direction that did not agree with the beginning concept of the movie. “Pixar’s Almost Masterpiece” goes into depth why this movie was a disappointment and the development issues before it’s release.

Same thing happened with Captain Marvel. Instead of pointing out actual "problems" with in the script or plot or the directors choices almost all the hate comments I see are mostly men angry that Captain Marvel became a movie in the first place and say how much they hate Larson for being a "raging feminist who never smiles like a women should." 🙄 Yet they ignore the fact that she smiles all the time in her videos and on her Instagram and she also smiled many times in the movie and she was only acting the way the directors told her to because Carol had 0 memory and didn't know who to trust.

When they talked about the back lash I had no idea about that and very confused about that kind of back lash the story was really deep and yah sure princesses are a Disney thing doesn’t mean it cant be pixar.
Fun fact, crows have a similar tongue to parrots, so they can be taught to speak. They are also highly intelligent.

It’s not as simple as that. The bigger issues was the way how the second director took the movie in a completely different direction which is what caused this movie to be a disappointment. Watch “Pixar’s Almost Masterpiece” and you’ll see a break down as to why this movie had a great premise which was later changed by the new director.

The song that starts are around 4 minutes in this video, "Touch the Sky" is by Julie Fowlis. Her music is excellent, she primarily sings in both English and Scottish Gaelic. Highly recommend even if you don't understand the language.

As a child that has a lot of struggles with her mother, this movie hits deep and really was the beginning of me not seeing a parent as this untouchable, unbreakable being but as a human with struggles, worries and problems themselves.
I remember first seeing this in theaters and it was a cool experience! Some funny moments. It made me appreciate Scottish culture 😊 also, Merida is super badass and started the princess line up where she didn’t need a man to complete her story. Like finally, a Disney character who doesn’t rely on romance to solve their problems 😂 I’m saying this as a single man for his whole life lmao Keep up the good work, Budz! 💪🏼
What I like about Merida over Elsa is that Merida doesn't "need no man"; she honestly isn't ready for one! She wants to explore and grow as a person. Marriage is a big responsibility and can cut you off from certain kinds of growth (though it does promote other avenues of growth you cannot access when single). IT felt less a "fuck the patriarchy" and more "I am not ready yet, give me time".
@@IceQueen975 Elsa seems asexual to me, they won't make it cannon but it would be cool representation. And, like you said, Merida just isn't ready...which is something that should also be covered more in media, especially for kids.
And going to have to disagree with you on that Merida started the "she didn’t need a man to complete her story". That was Mulan. She literally saved China and had the emperor acknowledge her feats.
@@neptunie5171 to a certain point...but she still fell for a guy and ended up with him (or at least it's hinted that way). The love interest was a small part of the movie, true...but it was still there. Not it Merida or Elsa's cases though.
Actually Mulan was the first, and before you say that she still "fell in love and ended up with a guy", the story wasn't about them or Romance AT ALL, it wasn't focused on to any extent. Mulan became a soldier and saved China irrespective of Shang or Romance , and gain they only hinted at the maybe ending up together at the end and that was just them dating which is more or less the same as Merida because technically its about Merida avoiding marriage so it's still a big plot thing, she has 3 love interests, does she want any of them? No. Does she end up them? No. But is romance (the avoidance of it) part of the plot, yes. With Mulan there was romance (but not really) but it had nothing to do with the story or a big impact on it, you could easily ignore it and pretend Shang didn't go after Mulan and nothing would change

I love the humour in Brave 🙌🏻 Especially the shenanigans from her little brothers always crack me up so much. 😂 and they do look so cute as little bears 🐻 but the end also never fails to make me teary eyed, love the character growth and the bond between Merida and her mom 🥺 and that Merida is finally free to be herself and follow her own dreams...

Oh yeah! The mom not changing back and Merida finally admitting that it was her fault, before begging her mother to come back ALWAYS chokes me up and I shed a few tears. Lol and I’ve seen this movie SO many times and cried a little even during this reaction. I’m a sucker for this movie lol
In finnish mythology we have virvatuli which is pretty much the same as a will o wisp. They would lead travellers off paths into, as Stef said, bogs and other deadly dangers.
We have the same in Danish myths. "Lygtemænd" ie. latern men would totally lead you to your death in bogs etc.

The mom is obviously on the wrong with the argument but I think is also important to remember the time is set and how marriages were a political thing. The mom wants Merida to marry in order to avoid war. Is not right, but she isn't doing it for the shits and giggles lmao. I just think you guys were a little too rough on her, because the movie is on Merida's pov, not the grown ups. Obviously there was an answer by changing things, but what Merida wanted at first, which was to simply say no, wasn't the answer either. There needed to be a different solution/system for her to find a way to not get married.
Yup! Especially since she had done it in the past herself she understands the political and societal part, takes emotions and personal life out of it.
She isn't entirely wrong though. Keeping the peace between the clans is the most important thing. It makes sense that only when they both start to understand each other do they figure out a compromise.

For anyone curious as to what MacGuffin's son was saying:
His first line is when the clan leaders are heckling each other, he says, "If he was a wee bit closer I could lob a caber at him, ya ken?" Translation: "If he was a bit closer I could throw a log at him, you know?"
Second line is at the feast when he is sitting with the other suitors, "Since ya saying it and I wasnae there tae see it for maself, Ahm gonnae hae take ya word for it tho". Translation: "Since you're saying it and I was not there to see it for myself, I am going to have to take your word for it."
And his third line is after Merida has made her speech and Lord MacGuffin asks his son what he thinks of the situation, "It's jist nae fair makin us ficht for the hand o the quine that disnae want any bit o it. Ken?" Translation: "It's just not fair to make us fight for the hand of a girl who does not want anything to do with it. You Know?"
He is a pretty nice guy. If she had to pick one she would definetly pick the gentle giant.
It's interesting when you think about how there wasn't really a bear plot originally and it was about the bond between them. The whole Brother Bear plotline was nice, but I'm curious to know what the original director had in mind for the project before it was handed over to another person that decided to go for the bear route.

Although the movie isn't bad, I thought it started off very good, but the kind of derailed into a whole different movie. I thought the beginning (which I found super interesting) and the end (I thought could be interesting) needed more time to develop or build up. It's basically two different movies.
I later found out the story originally was about gender norms and how it can harm the relationships between women in a sexist society where every woman(and children in general) needs to figure out what norms they want to enforce and what they want to fight against, and the consequences of these choices (basically the start of the movie).
But the director of the movie(Brenda Chapman), whose vision inspired by her and her daughter's relationship created this movie was "let go" (fired). To be replaced by a man (Mark Andrews), who either ignored or didn't see the message of the movie and changed it into what the later half of the movie is. Claiming "gender has nothing to do with the movie".
To me, it kind of ruined the "soul" of this movie, but Mereda is badass either way lol
Me, I think it's a good idea to have a tomboy princess as an heroin. It changes and a lot of girls can identify themselves to her
I loved everything about these characters , the animation, this world, the mother daughter focus, the lore, the comedy, etc. Its just that when the ‘bear’ thing came in, it became a different movie and I didn’t like that plot point as much. However, they did such a great job in the film, that it wasn’t difficult to like it anyway.

You're not wrong on wisps. Traditionally speaking, they are there to fool you and lead to your death. It's kinda of similar to siren who leads your ships to crush. "Lead you to your fate" means to your death 😅
They kinda twisted a lot of the original mythology, but I'm fine with it as it's not about historical accuracy. Love the movie ^_^
I used to like this movie as a kid, then I learned that they missed such a big opportunity to show a mother and daughter relationship where they respect each other's stands on individuality. Oh well, still a fun movie
The fact that I've always hated when my mom used to tell me I was like Merida because she was always ready to escape rather than to find herself as a better leader. And then it appears Moana and I thought yeah that's the reason why I could escape to find a way to save my people even if they don't want to, not to escape from my responsibilities

I think the reason why the crow got to talk is that crows can mimic human speech--bears don't have the required anatomy.
(Also, as someone who did archery quite a bit when they were younger and has taught archery to kids for months at a time--the scene where her mom throws the bow into the fire always gets me because it takes years to make a wooden bow if you include curing the wood and the sinew, which you'd have to in a hand-made bow like that. A shit ton of work went into that bow.)
Also, I come from a welsh family and loved seeing this movie in theatres. I was only like 12 when it came out so I was still young enough to appreciate the “princess not getting married” shit. And I have a bad relationship with my mom so this movie HITS HOME
Since you guys were talking about the scenery: fun fact, my mums old school friend who lived in the UK worked on this film since she lives in LA now. She worked on the scenery art for this movie and I believe has a head role (not completely sure) with the scenery animation team at Pixar and has worked on Finding Dory and Toy Story 4 so hearing you compliment the scenery art was pretty cool :)

Pretty sure Angus (her horse) is a Shire, which is a draft horse. Draft horses are big to begin with but as far as draft breeds go Shires certainly come in at the top. People think the Budweiser Clydesdales are something and while they are big they got nothing on Shires

Angus, Merida’s horse, is what’s known as a draught/draft horse. These are horses bred specifically because of their large size and great strength, so that they can be used for strenuous work tasks. Angus, in particular, is listed as being a Shire, which are native to Scotland (as are their more famous relations, the Clydesdales). These horses seem to be bred and employed mostly in areas and countries that are mountainous, likely because the rough terrain makes certain farming tasks more too difficult for both humans and other, smaller work animals. Though, if one’s goal was to go as fast as possible, a draught horse would not be the ideal pick, the location of Merida’s kingdom (farmland in the mountains of Scotland) and the use for which she employs him (transportation and a sturdy/stables mount for firing arrows while in motion) makes his breed perfectly suitable.

9:10 Angus is a shire horse and the proportions in this movie are actually quite well done. Shire horses were traditionally used for pulling carts and farm equipment so they tend to be larger and more muscular than other breeds shire horses are known to be one of the largest breeds of horse with a full grown stallion(like angus) standing around 17 hands or 1.7m tall
I always got the impression from the special features that Mark Andrews and co made the production a nightmare for original director and creator Brenda Chapman. It was a passion project for her, but the behind the scenes make production look like a frat house, with Mark Andrews leading such inclusive morale initiatives as beard growing contests 🙃. I got the impression that they sabotaged her by taking up too much space and derailing her leadership. That's my memory and impression of how it went down, so I may be a little off. In other projects like John Carter of Mars I had a good impression of Mark Andrews, so I was disappointed by the behind-the-scenes of Brave. I'd love to see Brenda Chapman's original vision executed. It may well have needed work to tighten up the plot as all stories do, but I think her co-directors could have supported her instead of undermining. Pixar really packaged it as though Chapman couldn't handle the responsibility and needed more experienced hands to step in. Now that I'm older and have workplace experience, it reeks of HR/PR smoothing over the company's image by calling bullying a 'misunderstanding'. Projecting: yes. Very common story: also yes.
7:48 There's a short movie where we find out that each of the sons had a gift of his own - the fourth was wise, the third was compassionate, the second was just and the eldest was strong, but he unfortunately took great strength to mean strength of character and so was convinced that he alone should be the sole heir. He asked the witch for a spell that would change his fate - which according to him meant 'giving him the strength of ten men' and he paid for it with his signet ring.
This film deserves so much respect for literally being one of the few Pixar/Disney films with two parents and showing the different aspects of parenthood

I think the real problem with this movie is more about the behind the scenes. The story originally was more about the bond between mother and daughter, and then the female director was fired (from her own proyect), and the male director was introduce. If you analyze from the stand point of story-telling, the structure it's all mess up. There are accusations of sexism in the decisions of Disney because of the way they manage the situation.
It is very cool, that the mom saved Merida by breaking a rock of the circle. Because you know people say fate is not set in stone or something. It’s really cool symbolism for changing fate…
On the backlash that she was a bad role model : the man hating part is funny considering men were not really focus of the story but yeah Mérida is not really that good of a role model, neither is queen elinor, the strength of the movie lies in thz fact that they are deeply flawed and the moral lies somewhere in the middle, Mérida is clearly not mature enough for the role she'll have to fulfil someday but she's a teen she has time to learn and tje queen is way too rigid and is willing to let her duty go before her daughters happiness but the duty she's faced with is not something to be taken lightly and they make for much better characters because in a way they are both right and both wrong they are not as perfect as other characters

Yeah the story would never work if she wasn't flawed. In the end she is a good role model at the end when she takes responsibility for her actions, is willing to sacrifice for the peace, and finally to apologize to her mother, but she needed the whole movie to get there. So did her mother.
I liked the beginning of this movie with the conflict between the mother and daughter. But when the mom turned into a bear it seemed to turn into a different movie and I hated it. It didn't vibe with anything that had come before, almost like I was watching two movies being shoved together.
When I found out the original writer of this movie, Brenda Chapman, had been fired and a new writer, Mark Andrews, that had been brought in had added the 'bear/fate' idea to it, it was an 'ah ha' moment. It felt like two different movies because that's what it was.
Haggis is legit delicious. I've been to Scotland twice and I've eaten it multiple times each trip. It's really rich and hearty I highly recommend at least trying it if you can!!

American here, also have tried and enjoyed haggis a lot! I also had vegetarian haggis which was pretty good but there was no sauce on it which made it too dry. But I had regular haggis in a restaurant in Inverness and it was delicious!

When I first watched this movie, I thought that the blue Will O Whisps were actually kinda cute and friendly, but I learned that in folklore, mostly Irish, Scottish, and British, that they are actually evil and supposedly spirits of the dead. I never knew that they were actually folkloric creatures. I always thought it was something Disney (Pixar) made up for the movie.
2:43 If you pause to look at the "Brave" title card, you can see Merida and Queen Elinor carved into the wood of the first and last letters, respectively. Merida is in the B and her mom is in the E (you can tell it's her mom because she has her crown.)
That basketball edit was fucking hilarious. This movie is so good! I've always thought it was the most underrated Disney movie. I also think the King is the best character, he reminds me so much of my dad.

Also, Scotland is absolutely magical. The cities I have seen were incredible. I want to go back one day and see more of Scotland.
I think the dislike was mostly from the trailer being misleading in terms of the story or something like that
And that Merida had been deemed a “Disney Princess” and they started to look the part which - ironically - pissed off a few feminists because her character was shown to be wanting the opposite throughout the movie

I was still a wee yin when this film came out, I still remember the magic and love I felt seeing it at the cinema. Loved all the wee things they added too, some things only us Scots picked up on, made it feel more personal. Pixar never disappoint!
I saw this movie with my mom. We both really liked it. And we cracked up at all of the Mama Bear miming. I just love watching you guys. I would love to see more Disney from you. Maybe Brother Bear? That's another movie that has a lot of unwarranted hate.

I'm lucky, my dad is from an island on the West Coast of Scotland so I know gàidhlig and my mum is from the north east of Scotland so I know Doric (Young McGuffin's dialect) so I speak both. Always loved this movie but the trailer made it look like something else completely. Haggis is delicious, I used to read out the ingredients list to my brother when we were young so he'd not want it and I'd get his portion too...

This movie will always have such a special place in my heart. I am very similar to Merida in personality and my mom is very similar to her mother’s. We had the exact same relationship at the time as they did in the movie. It was so nice to see that explored and see it actually be fixed into a healthy relationship. Merida was definitely my hero for me growing up. Also I was actively riding horses at the time just like her and was obsessed with angus. I’m assuming he’s a clydesdale. I got the opportunity to ride one once and it was insane. Her having to literally use a fence post to get on is very accurate lol.

I think especially since the child is the maine character and the movies are focused towards kids a lot of hate is gone towards the parents like in Brave or Coco, but it is also important to see that the parents do have a reason. It's just the lack of communication and meeting in the middle. They obviously love their kids and want to protect them, they are just being "overbearing" (get the pun 😋) doing the things they were taught and grew up knowing. Like the Queen here had to do the exact same thing as a girl. She sees it more as a self sacrifice for the good of the nation, not as a giving up of everything you are like Merida does.
