I can’t believe it didn’t run away since you were so close. That’s how it looked to me anyway. I live a block away from a park that’s centered around a natural spring. For years the spring has been home to ducks and koi fish, but a few months ago I spotted a muskrat living in the spring! Eventually I was able to get a picture or two but I can’t get close enough to get a good picture. This morning I’ve been sitting in my car and drinking coffee. I saw the muskrat do something that I’ve never seen before. In one corner of the spring there’s a wooden ramp for the ducks to climb in and out. For the past 30-40 minutes the muskrat has been going up that ramp then going several feet away from the spring into the grass and then going back down the ramp to the place where it likes to hang out. Up and down, over and over. I’m too far away to see if it has anything in its mouth or not. The spring in enclosed in a 3 foot tall brick wall so it can’t be burrowing. Maybe it’s making a nest. If it does build a nest that’s higher than the surface of the water then the city workers will tear that thing down. Sorry for rambling but I’m hoping that someone can shed some light on the activities of this muskrat.
