Matt, you may not be surprised when I tell you that, as a young boy living in a small north-coast town in NSW, I was blown away to see a tank (minus turret) being unloaded from a goods-train flatcar near the little railway station around 1952/53. Apparently - so the story went at the time - a dairy farmer had bought it (through Army disposal channels) as it was cheaper than buying a new tractor. Someone at the time said it was a Sherman but I can't recall the shape of the hull.
After WW2, countries like America, Britain and Russia had a lot of surplus tanks that were obsolete by the end of the war. So instead of just scrapping them, they were either sold as exports to smaller countries or converted into civilian vehicles which were much needed to rebuild the infrastructure lost during the war. Some of these civilian vehicles were then reconverted into tanks again to serve as museum displays.

Come across a lot of tank bulldozer conversion over the years, mainly general lee, Matilda, Valentine and churchill, not uncommon in australia!
