Rugby Referee SUPERCUT #1 - "Let's have a chat."

  • The SUPERCUT series combines several clips focusing on a specific topic, most of the clips are also featured in the general "referee compilation" series.
This supercut focuses on referees talking to the players during the game, and laying down the law with quite a few vicious one liners along the way.
The more rugby I watch, the more glorious instances I discover, so I'll probably be making a few more of these in the future. :p

having the refs mic'd up like this REALLY makes the game much more transparent. I wish other sports did this with the refs.
American football and baseball have so much issues with transparency and shoddy/inconsistent calls, and i feel like simply micing them up like this will help improve sports sooooo much!

As an american who played Rugby Union for over 15 years I must say that this is one of my favorite aspects of our game. The respect that is demanded by the referees and that is taught to the players from the start is amazing. This is what I wish we could see from our American games like baseball and football. Great work Rugby world. I am proud to have been a player, and am still proud to be a fan.

I can't understand why arguing with the umpires is tolerated so much in baseball. I've even heard announcers defend it, like a coach runs out of the dugout and screams in the ump's face, and the ump just stands there and takes it for a few minutes and eventually tosses him, and the announcers are like "He did what he had to do. It was his job to get tossed there." it just doesn't make sense to me at all.

@@Jivvi Well, the manager comes out to yell at the umpire to make sure the players don’t yell at him and get ejected.
But even then, it shouldn’t be allowed at all.

The worst is when umpires like Joe West start screaming back. It's so bizarre to have supposedly neutral officials get emotionally involved. Doesn't happen in any other big sport.

And if the officials know a binnable offense has taken place and cannot find the responsible player, does that not fall unto the captain for the same reason?
If you know a binnable offense has occurred but can't find the guy who did it, ten in the bin for the captain and it's on report to see if the tribunal can find it. To be honest I like Mathieu Raynal's approach best. He doesn't lecture too much, keeps his cool and just as effectively stops the backchat as any other ref. I sometimes feel they like the attention of being mic'd up and for me that's not what the game is about. It's about the players on the field and if you don't know who the ref is by the end of the match then he's done a very good job.
