Inlike the video, but I was hoping to see more varieties of grass, like Zoysia, for example. Also, it would have been nice to see the mowed version of the grasses she had, to see how they would look on the lawn.

another mistake people make is cutting the grass way too short trying to save time until next cutting, but that is very stressful for the grass, making it weak to diseases. Beside that longer the grass blade, more it can feed from the sun's light through photosynthesis, making it stronger, greener and resistant to elements, diseases and insects.

Also sharpen your mower blades 3 or 4 times during the cutting season given you don't hit rocks and such

Man, warm season grasses look terrible! Yuck. Up here I would consider that a weed grass.
I noticed how ugly they looked on my visits to Texas and Oklahoma years ago. Plus, they go brown in the winter. Much prefer our cool season grasses, which, not only LOOK much better, have better color and finer texture, but also stay green ALL year round if kept well irrigated.

This is reassuring. My neighbor figures the grass in our neighborhood is kentucky bluegrass, but all I could find at the store are some blends. I grabbed the one that had the greatest percentage of kentucky bluegrass. I don't remember if I saw the annual in it so before I use it, I will check.

The Bermuda in your video (that was in the plastic) was scarce and loose. I have seen Bermuda in a lawn and it is close growing tight and full. Why did he let her show that Bermuda when it wasn't representative? Thanks for sharing. I did learn about shade growing grass from this video and will try it.

Be sure to aerate at least every 1-2 years, re-seed if using fescues, then top-dress with 1/2" of compost, to add organic matter into those holes. That will act like funnels to get the water down to the roots of the grass. Mow tall to keep the soil shaded and the roots growing deep.

Was wondering if I could squeeze out k31 with darker grasses (perennial ryes, KBGs, TTTFs) by simply overseeding for several years. Moved into a new home in the high mountains of CO with terrible rocky clay soil and didn’t have the money to bring in truckloads of good dirt. Figured I’d go the cheap route and throw out K31 just to see if it would come up and cover a little. Well it came out a lot the second year due to consistent spring snows after just laying on the ground the first spring and summer. Was shocked that it could lay open on bad soil for a year and then germinate the following spring. Have since been overseeding with the 3 types of higher quality darker green grasses as mentioned above. They’ve done well and filled in, but the lighter green k31 is still the majority of the lawn so now I have a two-toned color. Didn’t want to nuke it all and start over but also didn’t want to waste my time overseeding with the darker stuff if it will take 5-10 yrs (or never) for it to phase out the k31. I realize it will take several seasons to do this if it’s possible at all but didn’t want to just spin my wheels and waste money on seed if it’s a hopeless proposition. Thanks for any advice you (or the expert lady) can provide.

if you have high sand content need to add organic material to it like peat moss, compost or just top soil . soil should be a mix of sand silt and clay believe the best soil sany loam or loamy sand is 60 percent sand with 20 and 20 silt clay other organic materials. testing the ph of soil is key to so takes up nutrients. most grass does best between 6.2 and 6.8 ph. if have low ph add lime if high ph add sulfur. hope this helps.
