    very pleased that a rail cab ride has been made of this interesting line with its tremendous engineering works. Thanks for taking the trouble to do it

    I grew up around Dore station. My bedroom window looked out onto the "cutting" junction signal that links the Pancras line. Happy days.

      Did you ever venture into Bradford or Totley tunnel for a dare I like tunnels I probably would have sneaked into it just to experience it.😊

    The horn sounds like a class 60
    Obviously a DMU of some type though.

    Shame it was such a wet day; the views from the train on a good day are great... I knew there were 3 tunnels, I didn't realise Totley was so much longer than the other two

    Around the 26:00 mark that's Chinley ... Or rather what remains of it today! At Famous Trains (Markeaton Park in Derby) we have a 1950s rendition of Chinley in OO Scale which we operate all sorts of trains on. This layout if you are a train enthusiast is a must see if you are in Derby and is open to the public at weekends. Usually I'm found at the Darley Park (ficticious but lots to see) end of the layout with the auburn hair and usually talking to someone about Etches Park Depot :o)

    The Woodhead route was better engineered and electrified albeit non standard.

      It was better engineered than this route, the thing is that it was the non standard electrification was one of the things that killed it off, the fact also that apart from the Manchester end it was mainly a freight line, they could have run dmus on it and any chance of reopening it is now not possible due to the cegb running the electricity supply through the 1954 tunnel, but it was a quicker route to Manchester about 10 minutes or longer

      @@graemehannam3950 Very sad really. It could have been converted to 25KV for a fraction of the amount BR was quoting at the time.

      It could have been converted to 6.25kv ac. The 81 to 85 classes could have used this voltage

      They were putting up masts for the Woodhead electrifcation before WW2: it had to be continued under BR but it was an ex-GC line and was only valuable so long as it could carry coal (it was otherwise a bit of a traffic-desert). Once the coal could be supplied by South American slave-labour-sourced/U.S.-owned mines, then the Woodhead route was finished, so completing the elimination of the ex-GC core lines.
      The line could have been converted to AC (as with the Glossop service and the Liverpool Street reelectrification back in 1960) but the locos weren't capable of being converted, I gather, and maybe the Woodhead Tunnel couldn't accomodate the 25Kv overhead's extra clearances.

      @@EM-yk1dw B.R. management would stretch the truth to get their way: hence the overpricing of the work needed to restore the Ribblehead Viaduct on the S & C route, and probably the same for a lot of the Beeching-closures costings.

    I can see why this route needs upgrading - complicated single line junctions definitely need upgrading to make the service much more efficient.

      The junctions at Dore were singled to make them more efficient: they made the Hyde Junction layout into a similar two-way single-lead affair in 1984, and the design was so inept that it allowed a head-on collision between two "108" units in 1991: only after that did they put in catch-points and a sand-trap and a platform-based "OFF" repeater. Probably the same kind of " logical, save money" thinking that produced the confusing Paddington "quart in a pint pot" track-layout that caused the carnage of the SN109 overrun in 1999.

      It's clear Sheffield to Dore is bunged up. Goods in the loop and trains waiting to enter Midland Station. An emaciated railway cannot perform well

      Yes it is the 2nd longest rail tunnel in the UK. Only the Severn tunnel is longer.

      I watched a video of an Italian train journey it was an old track route with old tunnels like Totley it was electrified too a Totley type tunnel was every couple of miles it must have been a feat in 18th century to build all that.😊

      Its Totley tunnel and it is 6,230 yards long runs between Grindleford and Totley

    Am I seeing things? For nearly four minutes, the engineer drives thru the tunnel, and is in complete darkness ? No headlights on that train?? (7:51 - 11:30)

      Tunnel walls are dark - so even bright light cannot give enough light to be seen by camera - but is enough for driver te see warning signs and lighgts.
      BR trains has only 1 light at front - second is a "marker". Depends on day/night main light switch from left to right side.

      Can be class 156 or 158 (if operated by Eastmidlands trains ex.Central Trains) or Class 170 (if operated br Transpenine Express).
      Propably not Class 185 - this is very modern train and video looks old.

      Ok. I'm almost sure now - it must be Class 158 CentralTrains (green livery) or early franchise by EMT (from november 2007) - and this train going to Liverpool (from Picadilly platform 14)
      TPE trains finishing "inside" Picadilly station and going "backwards" to Airport.
      You can spot same train going opposite direction at 14:31

      its a CT class 170, the horn gives it away as well as the clicking noise of the power controller
