Lincoln to Cleethorpes - Hastings DEMU cab ride - 1 July 2017 - audio from back cab

  • Cleethorpes Clipper part 6: Cab view from Lincoln to Cleethorpes - 47 miles in an hour, past wayside signal boxes and several bits of disused infrastructure. Filmed from our preserved Hastings DEMU on Saturday 1 July 2017, during our Cleethorpes Clipper railtour.
    .
Video footage is from an unattended unmonitored cab-camera in motor coach 60118 Tunbridge Wells. The audio track is from a synchronised recording made in the back cab (motor coach 60116 Mountfield); this is because of traincrew conversing in the leading cab.
    .
In this video we depart Lincoln Central via Pelham Street Junction and proceed on the former Great Central route via Market Rasen to Wrawby Junction. There we join other routes from Doncaster and Retford for the run through the resignalled Barnetby station and the ornate but closed Brocklesbury station through to Grimsby for the 3-mile single-track branch to the terminus at Cleethorpes.
    .
Arrival there marked the half-way point in our 508-mile itinerary!
    .

    .
ERRATUM: the caption at 1:33 contains a misapprehension: the huge building beyond the bus-depot (across the canal from it) is NOT a railway building. As commenter "TheLCNW" says: "The very large building just past the bus garage is actually the Titanic building and was never a railway building as such. It is a remaining part of the old Clayton and Shuttleworth (later Clayton Dewandre) company. Used at one time to build aircraft, steam vehicles and railway vehicles. and later various engineering products. It was never a railway building owned by a railway company. It was called the Titanic building due to the fact it is the same dimensions as the liner."
    .
    ERRATA:
    1) The place-name that the triangular junction between Habrough Junction and Brocklesby East Junction leads to is mis-spelled as "Ucleby" - it should be "Ulceby".
    2) The level crossing at Holton-le-Moor is an MCB, not an AHB-X.

Great memories of riding the Steam trains just after the 2nd world war on the Grimsby to Louth and onwards to London via Peterborough line (now disused from Grimsby to Boston). I was sent from London to Grimsby to spend all my holidays with my Gran who lived opposite the Wellogate Crossing in Grimsby and Grimsby Town Station. I notice on entering Cleethropes Station on the left the old WONDERLAND FUNFARE facing the sea had been pulled down! This is what the dozens of day trip specials from the Mill Towns came for and filled the town and got horribly drunk before returning home late the same evening. What memories as well as the long line of back ups at each signal starting from 9.00am all the way back to Barnetby Junction. I still have my railrover LINCOLNSHIRE AREA weekly 5/- (five shilling) rail pass.

Looks like this particular line had its guts ripped out of it in 1965 with all the stations being shut (thanks Dr Beeching!). As a consequence, how many trains were passed going the other way, just two wasn't it? (plus one stood at Grimsby station). Why doesn't this government understand, put the stations back, invest in the network again and the people will come. Simple economics but no one seems to want to make the commitment anymore. Sad.

+Richard Baker - Thank you. It's true there's less scenic interest but I rather wanted to show these segments because of and/or in spite of this. Also, definitely not the last segment, as I filmed the return (as far as Kensington (Olympia) too, quite a bit of it in glorious afternoon/evening sunshine. Happy memories, almost like those old Pleasure Seeker excursions or Brighton - Exeter. For me, it was more local to Hastings, here to Ashford, or later to Brighton with your train, always turned heads and got many compliments from both passengers and staff. I do wonder though, whether the driver on this video was a DEMU man, he's rather fond of going from Notch 7 straight to Off. We were always told to wind those old DEMUs up slowly, and likewise, run back to EO rather than shutting off all the way in one hit. Keep 'em rolling.

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  6 ปีที่แล้ว

+River Huntingdon - thank you for this! When did you last drive the old girl? As to shutting off, I know what you mean. When we were first back on the main line and I rode up front (back when that was not quite so forbidden) with Tim he described how when shutting off one should "keep some Amps" for a few moments. It avoids the risk of an engine overspeed trip by not unloading it all at once, and also saves wear on the line-breaker tips, I suppose. The driver on this video doesn't usually go straight from 7 to Off (but he does at 37:51 approaching Brocklesbury Jn because he immediately starts braking too). As an example, listen carefully at 8:45 when he shuts off near Langworth, he's still pulling some Amps and the main generator is making that wonderful whistling noise until 8:54 when you hear the click as he goes to Off. The effect will be more obvious when I publish audio from the other end (as he drives it back from Cleethorpes) because the other end stays in "preheat" (even in summer!) to power the buffet car. It's also good when drivers hold it in notch 5 when winding up, letting the load regulator come in properly - some do, plenty don't.
