i had adopted a kitten and my original cat got upset and stopped eating or drinking she immediately started losing weight drastically and it quickly seemed dire. I was able to save my cat. 1st you will need a turkey baster or syringe with no needle (preferably somewhere in between i had a large needleless plastic syringe in my junk drawer that honestly I don't remember where it was from) !!! YOU NEED TO GIVE YOUR CAT WATER MOST IMPORTANT!!! your cat can survive up to a week without food (not preferable of course) but it is 2nd step!! WATER IS FIRST STEP YOUR CAT CAN'T SURVIVE WITHOUT WATER FOR 2 OR 3 DAYS TOPS THEY WILL DEVELOP KIDNEY FAILURE AND AS RESULT HAVE ORGAN FAILURE!!! Get that baster/syringey thing and slowly give your cat water directly in the way a hamster water bottle drips and squirt a little forcefully to wash their mouths out but get that cat drinking water ASAP! after you get your cat to drink a decent amount of water (don't be afraid to be a lil excessive they might be really dehydrated ) then we can move on to step 2 GERBER CHICKEN BABY FOOD! Use the same syringe/baster and fill it with the baby food IT STINKS OMG the only thing funnier than how much it smells and seems gross is how much your cat will GO CRAZY FOR IT AND EAT IT UP. feed them the same like with the water slowly with the baster/syringe little by little till its gone. THIS HALTED MY CATS CRASHING. she regained health fairly rapidly BUT i was afraid of her having gotten an infection( due to dehydration her mouth stunk and she had a bit of weird mucusy stuff around her mouth and she weeped a bit from her eyes) so i did take her to the vet where she received an IV water injection and was prescribed antibiotics ( 600.00 dollars later). Today she is in GREAT SHAPE and is back to her old shenanigans. REALLY hope this helps ANYONE OUT THERE.

Currently going through this with my 13 year old boy. I've been syringe feeding him Hill's Prescription Recovery Diet a/d which has a high caloric content. It's a pate that I mix with a small amount of water and syringes up nicely. He's been able to maintain his weight so far with this method. He had lost a little over a pound when this started, but has gained half of it back. He is also on antibiotic tablets, as well as a very small dosage of mirtazapine to stimulate his appetite. He is eating tiny amounts on his own and some treats, but oftentimes he'll take a sniff and walk away. He was initially very weak and unsteady on his feet, and now is almost back to his usual self except for eating on his own. He is drinking well. I haven't given him him the syringe today in the hope he will get hungry enough to try on his own. However, if he doesn't then I will syringe feed him. I've tried all his favourites to entice him, even warming his food but it's not working. He is urinating and defecated yesterday so perhaps I am overly worried.

Thanks. I've been having problems getting my 16 year old cat to eat and it looks like I will have to do this to get him to eat (he is drinking fine).

These cats just play game with us humans. I have the same issue as you do Linda. I waste so much expensive wet food that there is no tomorrow. She is a Persian cat and my life depends on her. She is so beautiful that I can not ignore her. Every year take her to the vet and she gets the shots, and when I ask the vets what shall I do to boost her appetite they just look at me like I am from another planet, but when it comes the time to pay for the check up and services, all of the sudden they become so talkative and smile at you.
