    That harpsichord cadenza is why this is my favorite of the Brandenburg Concertos

      Same here! I disagree with all the rubato, however. Best performance I've heard is by Franz Rupp - it's supposed to be a tour de force from the instrument you normally hardly hear at all. I'm sure Bach played it best, and with great energy.

      I'm glad I finally did it. I'm waiting to sort out some issues for the first Brandenburg Concerto; if all goes well, I'll be able to complete the set!

    Always my favorite Brandenburg. The section starting at about 7:00 to the end is magical. Seeing it with the blue and green dots confirms my opinion. THANK YOU for posting. I can just imagine JSB rendering it from his head to paper giggling the whole time. Magical. I wonder if he wondered if anyone could play it.

    This music is what happened when Bach was soliciting for a new job! The concertos have such a breadth and depth of musical variety, because Bach compiled them as a job application to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, younger brother of the King.
    Alas! He was rejected! The orchestra of Christian Ludwig was not extensive enough to be able to perform these concertoes. Bach had not taken the circumstances of Christian Ludwig into account. A huge marketing blunder!
    The animation is, again, a Masterpiece of Stephen Malinowski. I particularly like how the repeating notes are not represented by separate graphics, but by flashes _in_ circles! A very nice idea!

    Do animations just come naturally for you at this point? How did you have the idea of the circular motif?

    • @smalin
      @smalin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the idea of having a single circle for multiple repetitions of a note started with this piece: th-cam.com/video/64pxHv2KM2A/w-d-xo.html In answer to your question: yes, it's pretty automatic for me. I start with a simple piano-roll style graphic, and when I watch it, salient features of the piece say to me "I'd look more like the music if ______," and the blank is filled in. I change things until I have a "that's enough for now" feeling and want to share what I've done more than I want to continue changing it.

      @@smalin One day, i hope to be half as creative as you are!
      Do you have any plans on revisiting old videos and incorporating those techniques? I would be interested what you could do with Beethoven's symphonies especially the finales of Eroica and the Ninth.

    • @smalin
      @smalin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Sam-tj9np I don't think I've ever tried to be creative. My goals are more along the lines of trying to be comprehensible. I sometimes revisit pieces, but I usually only do it when the piece is either much better suited to a new technique than any other piece I can think of, or when I love the piece so much that I feel it especially deserves it. Beethoven's symphonies don't fall in either of those categories (though you never know; sometimes a piece I think I'm already very familiar with suddenly seems new and exciting).

    • @smalin
      @smalin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Dopamine Cloud I don't understand you. Are you saying that if you had that goal, you would have to be creative?I don't see how that follows. In any case, my point to Sam 2323 was that I didn't set out hoping/desiring to be creative, and I don't approach my work thinking "how can I do this in a creative way?" "Creativity" might be a way to characterize an artist's approach to solving the problems presented by a certain project or goal --- but it's not something to be sought for its own sake.

    did you know JS Bach sent the Brandenburger Konzerte to apply for a job never got an answer…

    • @herrickinman9303
      @herrickinman9303 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you know that the Brandenburgs are only minor updates to concertos composed for, or at least performed by, the virtuoso musicians at the court of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Koethen, when Bach was the prince's Kapellmeister from 1717-1723? Bach even reused the Koethen wrapper when he sent the updates to the Margrave of Brandenburg. Unknown to Bach, the Margrave didn't have the musical resources to perform these concertos, because his brother, the Prussian king, had cut the music budget to pursue his military and political ambitions.

  • @johnthornton6358

    There was a time when these would bring clarity to the lines of music, showing how they interrelate. This? This is a mess. The harpsichord line keeps getting obscured, etc. Pretty, yes, but in terms of 'reading' the lines... not the best.
