    Dude in white bellbottoms is Allen Collins, he wrote the music to this song when he was 17. He survived the plane crash but still had the most ridiculously tragic life and died at 37. Sweetheart of a guy and a criminally underrated guitarist.

      Most forget that Ed King was brought on as the band's Bass Player in the early days. Ronnie basically told him he sucked, lol - walked in on him playing the intro riff to Sweet Home Alabama --- and the rest is history. I actually got to know, and message back and forth with Ed in his last few years on this earth. Amazing guitarist....also an amazing human being. RIP my friend.

    • @dave93x
      @dave93x 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hey I mean I'm 27 and I grew up on Trance, which is mostly electronic and loops, but I can appreciate and I live music like this, Stairway to Heaven, all of it. I can have Cats in the Cradle on and go into Seven Cities straight after. Music isn't worse today or back then, it's different and it's subjective. I get being passionate about your era, I am about mine, but you can't rip people's musical choices away from them over opinion.

    Dude, you GOT to watch the 1976 Knebworth, England version because you see the entire solo at the end and it shows the whole song. The Oakland 1977 version cuts out a good chunk of the guitar solo( 1-2 minutes) and it shows way too much of the crowd for my taste. Allen Collins, the tall, lanky guitarist that plays the ripping lead at the end of the song, wrote the music to Freebird when he was only 17 or 18 years old, and all these years later it's still considered one of greatest iconic rock songs of all time Think about that, the music to Freebird written by a teenager and lyrics written by a lead singer in Ronnie Van Zant, while a high school dropout, he was also truly a musical genius. Of all of that great catalog of Skynyrd classics, Van Zant never wrote any of his lyrics down. He kept everything only in his head, always insisting to the other guys in the band that if a song "ain't worth remembering then it ain't worth playing."

    What a reaction you gave! Lynyrd Skynyrd was such a force, it was a tragedy when that plane went down. I had the privilege of seeing them live, and it blew me away. The lead singer passed, I think the guitarist in white almost lost his arm and it took him 10 years to play again. At least one other member passed but I am sorry I do not not know which one. I am sure others will let you know.

    Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister) and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick were the ones who died in the crash, which broke up the band for 10 tears. The surviving members reformed in 1987. Crash survivors Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle, along with guitarist Ed King, who had left the band two years before the crash joined with Ronnie Van Zants younger brother Johnny. There have been other deaths and personnel changes over the years but Gary Rossington and Johnny Van Zant are still carrying on as Lynrd Skynrd and doing a farewell tour this year.

      Allen Collins was paralyzed and unable to play in 1987, but he did serve as the musical director for the Tribute Tour. He would be wheeled out to give a "don't drink, drive, do drugs" speech. He died from pneumonia (a complication of his paralysis) in 1990.

    Ronnie Vanzant (lead singer), Steve Gaines (guitarist to the left of the guy in white bellbottoms), and Cassie Gaines (backup vocals and Steve Gaines sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray all died in the plane crash on October 20th, 1977 near Gillsburg, Mississippi.
