As just a 12 year old, I use Prismacolors as my main pencils however for school purposes I use Crayola. Sometimes I use both for a project I do. Both are great. I definitely prefer Prismas however Crayolas for their intentions are good.
Thank you for this tutorial. I have been working with crayola to practice and what I’ve noticed is that I had to learn to do light layers, so perhaps they are good in promoting good habits for the beginner.
I actually find them worse for beginners because they don’t lay down as much color, so they tend to promote heavy-handed coloring more. That’s just my experience though!
You spoke about paper and maybe making a video about the different types of paper and which medium they suit. I have great trouble finding suitable paper for coloured pencils etc. and so I would love for you to make a video on this topic. I cannot afford paper imported from America so I hope you are able to advise on paper available in Australia. I found this video very interesting. I have Prismacolour pencils and Steadtler Ergo Soft. Thankyou Sarah
It’s definitely harder to find good recommendations here in Australia! I’ve had the same trouble when trying to source paper for the video I talked about. In the past, I’ve always found Quill 200GSM card stock to work nicely with my Prismacolor pencils. You can buy it at Officeworks. But I’ll update you when I try some other options!
A budget pencil set that I'd recommend trying (and reviewing) is the Prismacolor Scholar. I have the 60 set and was very surprised to discover how good they are for their price, and am surprised that I don't hear other colourists mentioning them or recommending them more often. Out of all of the cheap budget coloured pencils that I have (which admittedly aren't very many), the Scholars by far blow the rest out of the water! Granted, I haven't tried any of the budget brands coming straight out of China these days, though I'm quite tempted to try the Brutfuner squares despite them being quite a bit more expensive to purchase in Canada. And even though the Scholars aren't anywhere near as cheap as Crayola (nothing is, really), I'd still highly recommend giving them a try, and I'd certainly be very interested to hear what you think of them in a review!
Oh my dear, thank you! I can no longer get out to buy my own supplies, and I did not know what brand to look for in an eraser shaped like a pencil! I have not had a nice one in years, and here you are using one at about 24 minutes in! I shall procure be forthwith.
I have a 48 count set of Prismacolor and a 50 piece set of crayola , i tend to use the crayola to lay down a base tone then build up with the prismacolors. Seems to work well as long as i stay light with the crayolas.
I would like you to compare Castle Art with Arteza, Black Widow and Schpirrer Farben. I already have Prisma, Polychromos and Schpirrer Farben and though I am happy with these pencils, they are more expensive and precious so every time I have to sharpen them I feel a guilty cringe creep up my spine (especially, the polychromos). I would love to have Luminance and Pablo's however with the way I feel about using my Polychromos and how new I am to creating an eye catching composition, I think I'll hold off on splurging until I am more confident in how much experience I've gained with different kinds of pencils and application.
I have the Castle Art, Arteza and Black Widow ready for comparison. I haven’t heard of Schpirrer Farben before- so I will check them out! What do you think of them?
Sarah you are amazing sweet heart. I love all of this about colored pencils and paper. I would like the watch you try out the Prismas in this challenge. Love Terri Simmers.
Teehee, cheeky Mosko 6:28 - 6:40 I don't know if my watercolor pencil colors are weak because of age (bought in 2005, lol) or because they are watercolor pencils. I'm potentially on the hunt for new color pencils (not necessarily watercolor), and seeing how 12 colors can be blended is quite interesting. I can't be sure if there are Crayola color pencils where I live, but the famous student-grade pencil brands are Faber-Castell and Staedtler Luna. I know what to buy the next time I haunt my local stationery shop :D
I find the Quill brand at Officeworks is pretty good with colored pencil. If you're wanting professional quality, I have been ordering paper online and really like the Canson or Strathmore brands - Bristol Vellum is my favorite, but it's too thick for my printer! So I use Quill for the coloring pages and the Vellum for my art that doesn't need printing :)
@@SarahRenaeClark thanks! We are going to Bendigo on Thursday to Officeworks I will have a look, iv got paper from them before which is thicker but it’s very smooth no tooth so I’m guessing it was photo paper.
I knew an artist who uses Prismacolor, both Premier and Scholar, she said that if you're poor(like me lol), she highly suggest Cra Z Art colored pencils, for having stronger and soft crayon-like leds, which is shockingly familiar to the professional colored pencils.
Broken leads ? superglue the lead back into the pencil, put little spot of glue in the hole in the pencil and shove the lead back in, five minutes upright in a cup trust me it works , done it hundreds of times.
@@SarahRenaeClark it was your video that made me Search crayola up on amazon out of curiosity and was surprised to see the the adult set, ---> I will check out your review on them to see if they are worth purchase. thanks for sharing your insight on these coloring pencils Sarah, Exploring things is always a wonderful activity if i say so. :D
Next time, I will do this with better paper! Here are some of my more recent paper recommendations: th-cam.com/video/JrSwJF-35FM/w-d-xo.html
Please do more tutorials like this, especially how to colour nature scenes and water drops, beads, ponds etc. Your tutorials are so good.

You have a kitty cat?! 😍
I don't think anyone would mind him becoming an assistant in your videos.
I love how throughout you explain what you do. High quality filming and content! Thanks a lot :3
Love my Crayola's and my Crayola Signature pencils.

I've noticed that there are a lot of cheaper brands out there nice to see a comparison of different brands.
The same challenge of 12 colors only, but using Luminances, on that hard Disney coloring book you hate, but love.

What brand of pencils would you LOVE to try?
Dom's and camil pencils
Brutfuner oily pencils
@@barbarahowell2549 they are VERY good. I got a 168 set for Christmas.
Arteza Premium Colored Pencils
Not Prismacolor, they are very bad.
See I believe I have mentioned this before but I combine Crayola and Prismacolor for all my colorings, they work very well together in my opinion
I would like that paper video! That would be super useful to those of us printing coloring pages. Thanks!

did you use nailpolish remover with or without acetone?
Where do you get your paper? Is Officeworks worth trying?

Hey Sarah, how do you feel about doing a colour page using only one set of black widow pencils?
I knew an artist who uses Prismacolor, both Premier and Scholar, she said that if you're poor(like me lol), she highly suggest Cra Z Art colored pencils, for having stronger and soft crayon-like leds, which is shockingly familiar to the professional colored pencils.
Thats so beautiful and with 12 colours never used the white pencil ( learned something new + nail varnish removal )
Broken leads ? superglue the lead back into the pencil, put little spot of glue in the hole in the pencil and shove the lead back in, five minutes upright in a cup trust me it works , done it hundreds of times.
That looks very fabulous! 🥰🤩
When you were colouring with coloured pencils, you did it lightly first before you blend.
Yeah, i'm not an artist, but I like to color just as a light hobby. so I think something like crayola will work just fine for me.
Would love to watch a paper comparison video.
I’ve got one planned!
Kitty!!! I pet kitty!!! Virtually of course 😅
What colors blend well together when it comes to using crayolas crayons and colored pencils together.
I haven’t actually tried this, but you could use my color blending chart to figure it out- do the pencils down the side and the crayons along the top!
@@SarahRenaeClark ok I will try that
What colors were in that set of crayola 12 set so I know what. Color order to do my picture in my coloring book.
It’s the standard 12 set that Crayola sell
What would you recommend for a budget pencil that is a harder lead to use for more detail and also with vibrant colour? Thankyou!
I’ve just done a review on Brutfuner- they might be a good fit for what you are looking for! th-cam.com/video/pg7nHYAv7AA/w-d-xo.html
Crayola does in fact sell a different set of coloring pencils for adults.
I use to think Crayola only sold KIDS products.
I’ve reviewed the adult range in a few other videos 😊

I Belgium we have Stabilo
Please review Castle Arts, I’m a beginner and trying to figure all of this out.
I did! They are mentioned in a few of my videos in this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLYZC05VVDgpQumnXfzW6CYWdxEYxIKV2m.html
for markers i like king art
Perhaps using a circular method for the background would have reduced the visibility of the lines.
Is this page available to colour?
Yes! Available here: sarahrenaeclark.com/shop/hot-air-balloon-coloring-page/

Can you paint a picture of Aladdin without using white paint
